Report on Lake Rejuvenation of Kalena Agrahara Kere, Bangalore South October 2013 Abstract The Kalena Agrahara Kere is located at Kalena Agrahara between Hulimavu and Gottigere. This is a small lake that has been consistently detiorating over the last 5 years. Over the last year, we have noticed drastic change in the quality of the lake water. Currently we notice that there is a direct inflow of sewage discharge from the North – West corner of the lake. The water level of the lake also has considerably reduced over the last 4 years with both lack of ground water recharge and due to lack of seasonal rains. We the members of Kalena Agrahara Lake Preservation and Beautifcation Members Association ( KALPBMA ) are taking efforts through our mission: “Parivartan” to transfrom this lake to its earlier glory with the help of all stake holders. Detailed Note: The Kalena Kere, is bounded by the Bannerghata Main Road on the East, Kalena Village on the North East corner, Loyola Church land on the east, Vithola Apartment on West and the road leading to Meenakshi Layout on the South. This currently has shrunk to an approximate coverage of 5 acres. Over the last many years, residents in the area and the KALPBMA has been engaged and is involving residents around this area in cleaning of the lake and its surroundings. BBMP had tendered and organized the fencing of the lake from two sides around 2010 - 2011 As of January 2013, we have organized the major functions, “Parivartan” , at the lake front with all dignitaries from political and adminstrative forums gracing the occassion. Mr Krishnappa, MLA South Bangalore, Mr Vamancharya PCB Chairperson, Mr Janappa BDA Jt Commissioner, BBMP Engineer had extended their full cooperation through the event. We had the expert in field of lake rejuvenation, Mr Kiran Kulkarni, infuse EM Solution to help immediately remedy the impact of sewage solid waste accumulation in the lake. As on Feb 24th 2013, the second phase of drive is marked with the gracious presence of Mr Yellapa Reddy at our premises early morning. The residents and Mr Yellapa Reddy had a great free flowing discussion towards the lake rejuvenation and concrete actions to be taken ahead. Also he suggested to make the drive include the overall environmental rejuvenation of the entire area. Uptil Oct First week: We have held a couple of more functions to bring in few officials and take steps in cleaning the lake and work towards its preservation.

The MAJOR concerns currently requiring URGENT resolution are: 1. STOP the small scale industry effluent discharge from flowing into any storm water or sewage drain system that is connected to the lake. 2. The effective re-route of the raw sewage discharge in the north west corner of the lake from the JP Nagar 8th phase away from the lake OR STP / holding tank as an interim measure at the start point of the Raja Kaluve inside the JP Nagar 8th phase. 3. Ensure only treated water enters the Raja Kauve from the JP Nagar drain Additional issues, including extended cleaning, dredging deweeding and other measures, will be taken up in the year ahead, once these are addressed

Details of Raw Sewage Discharge: * Presumably as per our understanding as of two years back, the boundary wall abutting the Loyala Church Property ( Holy Cross Provinciale ..? ) and JP Nagar 8th phase had been broken and the raw sewage water has been let across the entire length of the church land. This open drain dug through the entire stretch is now opening into the Kalena lake. The map of this stretch is as enclosed in Annexure [1] * The J.P Nagar 8th Phase would be in the order of 1000+ residential units and other possible sources of raw discharge flowing through this drain. We believe the flow is currently slowly increasing as the absorption of the discharge through the Church land is lesser every passing month. Even so the Church land is itself getting highly polluted in the process. * There is also a presumption that the discharge contains contamination due to some small scale industrial waste effluent flowing in. There is a dire need to either divert the inflow to a proper STP unit and / or take measures to completely treat the discharge before being let out. There may be additional inlet of raw sewage that we may need to identify and take suitable actions thereof.
