Keeping it Captivating

Retelling Sticks are a tool for students to help them retell stories, while identifying and describing story elements. The visual cues will aid students in providing key ideas and details as they retell and sequence. Multiple sets of the Retelling Sticks can be made; simultaneously, small groups or partners can each use a set to facilitate retelling. Preparation: 1.  Cut out circles. 2.  Laminate for long-lasting durability. 3.  Glue each circle onto a popsicle stick. Hot glue will work great! Ways to Use: •  Whole group •  Small group •  Partners- This is an important skill with the Common Core. Partners can use the Retelling Sticks to discuss and retell the story elements.

Kindergarten Standards •  CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RL.K.2 With prompting and support, retell familiar stories, including key details. •  CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RL.K.3 With prompting and support, identify characters, settings, and major events in a story. First Grade Standards •  CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RL.1.1 Ask and answer questions about key details in a text. •  CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RL.1.2 Retell stories, including key details, and demonstrate understanding of their central message or lesson. •  CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RL.1.3 Describe characters, settings, and major events in a story, using key details.
