This year we proudly present the most diverse line-up in the New Orleans Film Festival’s history: 53% of films are helmed by female and gender non-conforming directors, and 45% are by directors of color. We hope that among these 230+ films, you will find inspiration in the growing number of perspectives represented at the 28th New Orleans Film Festival, revel in the opportunity to discover exhilarating new films, and mingle with over 400 filmmakers in attendance. Our thanks and appreciation go to our sponsors, donors, members, screeners and volunteers, whose unwavering support has helped us become a critical platform for emerging filmmakers. Your support means the New Orleans Film Society can share dynamic new films with over 30,000 people each year, and invest year-round in the career growth of Southern filmmakers. Together, we ensure the New Orleans Film Festival continues as a vital launchpad to foster meaningful connection, create space for generative discussion, and seed relationships that result in the great filmmaking of tomorrow.

From a young age, Trombone Shorty has been inseparable from his horn. So when his mother, Lois, brought him to see Bo Diddley at Jazz Fest, he took it with him and played along with the legendary bluesman from the crowd. Diddley took notice and had
the crowd pass the 4-year-old boy and his horn to the stage. He blew everyone away. Today, Trombone Shorty closes out the final day of Jazz Fest himself, and other members of his talented family (The Andrews) split time between their hometown and touring the world.
– May 4, 1990

DISTRIBUTION DEMYSTIFIED
WHOLE WORLD’S WATCHING: THE ART OF UNREST
Each year, more films find their way to larger audiences over a wider and wider variety of platforms. The scale is staggering and the ink shows no signs of drying on the map of the 21st-century distribution model. Our panelists make it their business to stay on the frontier, so now’s the time to benefit from their experience.
In times of crisis, what is the role of those who make and engage with film: do we keep calm and continue our work, or reposition to engage a country’s concerns? A conversation probing the prerogatives and responsibilities of artists, critics, and audiences alike in the post-election upheaval.

Summer is a perpetual state of being at the Perlmans’ Italian villa. Lush, lazy mornings become long, wine-filled evenings, ensconced in discussions of Greco-Roman art and the sounds of Mahler on piano. Oliver, a 24-year-old research assistant (Armie Hammer), joins the Perlmans for six weeks of study before returning to his position at Columbia. 17-year old Elio (Timothée Chalamet) is immediately infatuated. They begin a tense series of furtive glances and curt conversations, both enchanted but unwilling to meet the other halfway. A coming of age story. A tale of first love. Americans summering in beautiful, foreign locales. Any categorization would be an oversimplification of the evocative and intoxicating world of Call Me By Your Name. -GHR

Set in the rural American South during World War II, Dee Rees’ Mudbound is an epic story of two families pitted against one another by a ruthless social hierarchy, yet bound together by the shared farmland of the Mississippi Delta. Mudbound follows the McAllan family, newly transplanted from the quiet civility of Memphis and unprepared for the harsh demands of farming. Despite the grandiose dreams of Henry (Jason Clarke), his wife Laura (Carey Mulligan) struggles to keep the faith in her husband’s losing venture. Meanwhile, Hap and Florence Jackson (Rob Morgan, Mary J. Blige) — sharecroppers who have worked the land for generations — struggle bravely to build a small dream of their own despite the rigidly enforced social barriers they face. The war upends both families’ plans as their returning loved ones, Jamie McAllan (Garrett Hedlund) and Ronsel Jackson (Jason Mitchell), forge a fast but uneasy friendship that challenges the brutal realities of the Jim Crow South in which they live.

A thrilling and inspiring true story begins on the eve of World War II as, within days of becoming Prime Minister of Great Britain, Winston Churchill (Academy Award nominee Gary Oldman) must face one of his most turbulent and defining trials: exploring a negotiated peace treaty with Nazi Germany, or standing firm to fight for the ideals, liberty, and freedom of a nation. As the unstoppable Nazi forces roll across Western Europe and the threat of invasion is imminent, and with an unprepared public, a skeptical King, and his own party plotting against him, Churchill must withstand his darkest hour, rally a nation, and attempt to change the course of world history.

Igniting a war of currents, Westinghouse and Tesla bet everything on risky and dangerous alternating current.

People seeking enlightenment attend a retreat at the “Happiness Academy,” where workshops and social gatherings focus on “laughter, orgasm, and meditation.” The leader of this center video chats with his congregation as “Raël”—but the film focuses not as much on the religious practices of the center’s worshippers as the love triangle of three attendees. In particular, one woman, played by Laure Calamy, commands our attention as she overcomes insecurity to connect with a more confident woman and a pop singer whom she desires. Reality and fiction are two sides of the same coin in this documentary/narrative hybrid, which had its U.S. Premiere at New Directors/ New Films. -KM

Océane Michel, an emerging French standup comedian, brings charm and charisma to this romantic comedy, which she stars in and directs. Her eccentric family, hilarious gaggle of friends, and seemingly unending roster of ex-girlfriends keep her busy. When her girlfriend dumps her, she falls hard for Cécile, a sweet, shy photographer played by natural talent Alice Pol. In this irreverent film the ensemble cast shines as Océane’s meddling but devoted cohort speculate whether or not this fling will last. -KM
Ady, a 13 year old living in Southern France, is the ultimate teenage rebel. Overwhelmed by his out-of-control son, Ady’s father decides to send him across the Mediterranean to Burkina Faso to live with his uncle Amadou for the summer. Dancing deftly between the confusion and possibilities of youth, Play the Devil offers the story of Gregory, a teenager on the cusp of graduation in the town of Paramin, Trinidad. He is torn between meeting the expectations of his family by studying medicine abroad and his passion to study the world’s beauty through photography. Amid this choice and the return of his father—a recovering addict—his artistic spirit catches the attention of an affluent businessman who attempts to foster Greg’s talent until the relationship goes too far. Tender moments intertwine with the lush cliffsides and vistas of Trinidad and Tobago, toppling one into the next until a choice with dire consequences is made during the year’s Carnival. -AL

After his release from a U.S. prison, Cisco hardly expects to be welcomed back into his home in the Dominican Republic with open arms, but life on the island for an ex-convict with no marketable skills is even harder than he’d imagined. Left with no better option, he uses his gifts as a boxer to earn cash in backalley bloodbuckets. Here he catches the eye of Nichi, an exiled Italian gambler who sees, in making Cisco legit, a chance to pay off the bookies with his share of the prize purse. Mixing bruising match scenes with a hardscrabble view of island life, Sambá’s fighting elegy goes toe-to-toe with the best of the genre. -JK
Director Owsley Brown spins a gorgeous and soulful symphony of a city, Portau-Prince, sprung to life through the performances and words of the students and teachers at Sainte Trinité Music School. Beginning three years before the devastating earthquake of January 2010 that left 300,000 dead and 1.5 million homeless, music’s saving grace takes on new meaning in the aftermath of the horror that leaves the school in ruins. However, Serenade for Haiti never wallows in sorrow: it’s a visual feast and celebration of a musical and cultural heritage whose fingerprints can be found all over New Orleans. -NS

ChangeMakers
“Change-Makers” brings to the forefront stories of social activism and advocacy, featuring films that speak to a pulsing awareness of social issues and the responses among everyday citizens, shared by creative voices who endeavor to effect change. From farm workers’ union activists in the 60s, to the front lines of AIDS activism in the 80s, and even recent responses to the first 100 days of the current administration, the New Orleans Film Festival gives a voice to issues that are at once deeply personal and political.

Before it was associated with all things wrong with liberalism during the fateful 2008 election, the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now wielded more power than any anti-poverty community rights group in American history. ACORN and the Firestorm chronicles the dramatic rise and fall of this agent of social change, as a video smear campaign from a proto-alt-right, Breitbart-backed activist takes down the group and its New Orleans-based founder Wade Rathke. Directors Reuben Atlas and NOFF alum Sam Pollard have created a work that feels like both a time capsule and a warning shot, a potent lesson in the power of media and a harrowing blueprint for our current era of alternative facts and fake news. -NS Preceded by the short film “Fired Up” (3 min)

Since the early 90s, AIDS has largely been painted as affecting mainly white, gay males. Rich with stories, Nothing Without Us brings light to those who this narrative passes over. Viewers are brought to locations as close as New Orleans and as far as Nigeria to meet the women who fight for equal rights and medical protection against AIDS. These women have banded together in organizations to bring medication, counseling, and—perhaps most importantly—attention to the women of color that are most afflicted by the crisis. The problem of coastal land loss in Southern Louisiana demands honesty, directness, and urgency. On Our Watch responds with interviews with activists, professors, and community leaders who demonstrate how we got here and where we are going. The effects of sea rise and erosion in the wetlands touch down on numerous industries and influence the lives of residents throughout the Delta, including New Orleans. Solutions have been placed on the table, but they are underfunded, and civic engagement on a small scale appears to be the only route to sustainability on a larger one. But such radical transformation might be wishful thinking. -KM Filmmaker scheduled to attend. Preceded by short film “Flooded With You” (8 min)
One of the most commonly misdiagnosed afflictions for women in the U.S. is thyroid disease. The thyroid has a hand in nearly every major function in the body, making symptoms difficult to pin down, as they are comprised of common issues such as fatigue, weight gain, dry skin, and depression. Through director Maggie Hadleigh-West’s own medical journey, Sick to Death! investigates the political and medical reasons thyroid disease is so often overlooked and the serious health complications that can occur when left untreated. Using personal video and interviews with medical professionals and women who grapple with thyroid problems every day, Maggie seeks answers that have the potential to better her own life and those of the women around her. -AL Filmmaker scheduled to attend.

DIR: STANLEY NELSON; PRD: STANLEY NELSON, MARCO WILLIAMS, CYNDEE READDEAN, STACEY L. HOLMAN; WRI: STANLEY NELSON, MARCIA SMITH; DP: ANTONIO ROSSI; ED: K. A. MIILLE
Tell Them We Are Rising is the story of how education provides a gateway to empowerment. Including in its scope the embargos on knowledge enforced during slavery, student-led Civil Rights Protests of the 60s, and the Historically Black Colleges of present day, a portrait of perseverance and determination is given light within a narrative that so often ignores black history. Archival footage and interviews with former students and historians lends richness to discussions of Booker T. Washington, W.E.B. Dubois, and incidents at Southern University—incidents that resonate today. The AIDS crisis appeared in a flash and threatened the physical and emotional livelihood of generations of queer communities. Sam (Alan Cumming), a former member of ACT UP, remembers that pain all too well. Memories of those years pervade his artistic work and have pushed him to abandon painting in favor of a new video project connected to a close friend whom he lost to AIDS. Even as other friends seem to move on, tt’s a past he can’t escape, until he meets Braeden. Braeden is young and taking full advantage of the achievements that Sam worked so hard to reach, but their romance may be what Sam needs to move forward in the changed reality that AIDS activism has created. -AL Filmmaker in attendance. In a cozier city, bumping into your ex-lover might call for an awkward smile and swift goodbye, but in London’s chilly metropolis it calls for a full-on catch up. So Frank and Inez find themselves, biking the same route to a party. Picking their way across parks and side streets, they traverse their shared history with far-from-rosy recollection. Every twist of their lacerating conversation is captured by the cameras perched on their helmets, a safety precaution that could become an emotional liability. More than just a bold experiment, the all-GoPro format is weightless and elastic, sliding from Google Maps-esque streetscapes into voyeuristic close-ups, mirroring Frank and Inez’s distances and their too-close closeness. -JK Filmmaker in attendance.

In the midst of the beautiful desolation of Iceland, Einar sits in an isolated cabin. His memories inform a growing depression and in a moment of desperation, he calls his ex, Gunnar, hoping that their conversation will temporarily alleviate his despair. Hearing the frightened and hopeless edge in his voice, Gunnar sets out in the middle of the night in an effort to assuage Einar’s fears. As they spend the next few days together, the seclusion and their memories become an all-consuming prison. Gunnar feels a creeping paranoia and is unable to discern what is real and what is fabricated. Einar’s sudden disappearance throws Gunnar into total chaos, seemingly without hope of escape. Rift is a masterclass in tension and a tribute to the art of slow-burn cinema. -GHR

A film ostensibly about a lonely dog groomer’s twin quests, to find love and to fund his all-cat remake of Carrie, She’s Allergic to Cats angles after darker, deeper-swimming fish. Shooting across tape and digital formats, director Michael Reich slathers on pops, skips, noise, and other magnetic crust with an almost precognitive aesthetic sense, building up a visual fabric that’s one part giallo, one part Men’s Wearhouse commercial c.1992, and one part Stephen King straight-to-video cheese. Bucking the specter (everywhere in our post-Too Many Cooks moment) of weirdness for its own sake, Reich reaches down into his story’s molten core: the unwell subconscious writhing behind the painfully composed face of the American male. -JK Filmmaker in attendance.

Time and space are amorphous concepts in The World of Which We Dream Doesn’t Exist. We visit several generations of a family living in Khuvsgul, on the Mongolian steppe. A Shaman elder receives a message in a dream that a great journey is ahead. His grandson is accidentally poisoned by mushrooms and the Shaman seeks the advice and support of his ancestors. As we follow each family member through their daily duties and private moments, we are also privy to the events taking place on another plane of existence, parallel to, yet removed from the world of the living. The World of Which We Dream Doesn’t Exist examines how each small moment in a life reaches into the past and connect us to each other. -GHR

Legacy looms large in Victor’s mind: his recently deceased father’s legacy, his family’s legacy, and what will one day be his own. Victor hires Dorian, a skeptical documentarian, and Zuhair, a cameraman, to follow him to France for the reading of his father’s will. Victor intends to use film to craft a positive narrative around his family’s wealth, masking his father’s less than savory business tactics and a history of exploitation in French West Africa. As they travel across France, it becomes clear that Victor’s often comedic delusions do not come close to the bizarre reality of who his father was. Victor’s History considers the complicated layers of privilege, colonization, and just who deserves to recount and present the past. -GHR
Deceived by the scruffy ginger counselor who’s the only boy near her emotional age at Emily Dickinson Writing Camp, Marion ditches lunch duty and jumps the next bus out of town. Alone and friendless, she holes up in a nowhere motel, ignoring the nagging calls from her sister and indulging in utter anonymity. There Marion meets Norman, and each is haunted by the feeling that they’ve met the other before. Like a garage band covering a string quartet, freshman director Jesse Robinson rebuilds Psycho from a looser, warmer material. Young and Innocent throws a haze across Hitchcock’s spartan menace, replacing autumnal chill with summer swelter, and adult frailty with the languageless longings of adolescence. -JK

Razia Shabnam is revolutionizing what it means to be feminine and Muslim in Kolkata, India. She teaches boxing to a group of teenage girls who experience fear, abuse, and the threat of rape on a daily basis. At home, she raises a son who constantly absorbs the lessons of a culture that promotes misogynistic values. But Razia, one of the country’s first female boxing coaches, does not only teach the women of her community to fight, but the men to respect them. 14-year-old Ola has largely replaced her alcoholic father as head of her family, minding her live-wire younger brother Nikodem and longing to reunite with their absent mother. It’s almost time for Nikodem’s first communion, and successfully catechising her deeply irreligious brother seems like Ola’s big chance to affect the longed-for reunion and impress the priests and social workers who manage her family. In her feature debut, Anna Zamecka secrets her camera into Ola’s impossibly cramped apartment, ducking the daily crossfire of bickering and tears. Never looming or claustrophobic, her gaze achieves an illuminating closeness, peeling away sentimentality and unveiling the pain that runs in a family. -JK
David Huggins lives a quiet life in Hoboken, New Jersey. At 72 years old he fills most of his time with painting, watching movies, and a part-time job at a local store. But, mostly, David spends his time reminiscing on his past relationship with an alien being. Through books and forums David connects with others who have similar experiences; through painting his memories he finds his catharsis. Welcoming viewers into his home, Love and Saucers is composed of David’s rich descriptions of his life and works, and supported by interviews with the friends, family, and various members of the community. Each has been touched by his positive influence, and each discusses the distinct possibility that we are not alone. -AL

Horace Tapscott came up in 1950s Los Angeles as a composer and piano player, relying on the support of the local black musician’s union and the Watts Happening Coffee House. Later forming the Pan-Afrikan Arkestra, he promoted self-love in the black community, which he saw mainstream white American culture rejecting as militantism. New Orleans-born director Barbara McCullough takes us on a lyrical journey through Tapscott’s oral history and performances. Tapscott’s evocative storytelling about the status of black men, jazz, and resistance in mid-century America resonates today as the country grapples with the legacy and future of the Civil Rights Movement. -KM
Manuel Chirinos, lead singer of “Los Plebes de Olancho,” tells his perilous story to a radio DJ in the United States where he has fled from his hometown of Olancho, Honduras. Back home his band was the preferred entertainment for the drug cartels whose power touches every part of local life. Manuel’s bandmates take us through gorgeous, peaceful afternoons with family, fun but unprofitable shows at neighborhood parties, and anxious, clandestine nights performing for Olancho’s jefes. In 1909, a Paiute runner named Willie Boy led a posse of deputies on a legendary chase through the California desert. 60 years later, Robert Blake played Willie in the film. Almost 50 years after that, the arid Paiute homeland is trod by retirees in loud golf pants, irrigated by a massive aquifer to quench the desert into lush submission. Piling up loopy and scathing images (a golf cart shaped like Bob Hope’s face, a wine-sipping partygoer in a hot-pink buckskin) Robinson Devor (Zoo, Police Beat) forgoes any attempt at linearity, taking an almost geological view of time in the certainty that, no matter how hard it may be to see with the naked eye, history obeys cycles. -JK
In this immersive, experimental documentary, the world belongs to Hatsune Miku, a Japanese vocaloid, or synthesizer voice, played by a manga character with blue pigtails. Her backstory and personality have been largely created as fan fiction. Director Ann Oren joins hundreds of girls in taking on the role of Hatsune Miku in Tokyo’s manic cosplay universe, where diehard devotees buy tickets to see a hologram of the virtual goddess perform for sold-out arenas. Along the way, the motives of cosplayers and Hatsune Miku obsessives are alternately exposed and concealed. Both disorienting and delightful, The World Is Mine reveals how fantasy and identity performance can spur romance, friendship, self-confidence, and isolation. -KM

With hands clasped and hair blowing in the wind, the image of Thelma and Louise speeding across the desert in a powder blue convertible has influenced generations of women. Thelma and Louise spoke to empowerment, strength, and freedom, and inspired a national survey created by Jennifer Townsend, the director of Catching Sight of Thelma and Louise. Over several months, she collected the thoughts and impacts of this iconic film. Now, over 25 years later, Townsend is reopening the conversation with those original survey participants. Through interviews with fans and some of the actors, including Christopher McDonald, audiences are brought into an intimate discussion of the many realities of being a woman in society. -AL

An adored father and mechanic in the guts of a Washington State ferry boat by day, Joe Carman tires himself to the bone by night, readying himself for bruising competitive mixed martial arts bouts. Pushing 40 and struggling to justify his lifestyle to his fed-up family, he can only offer that his brutal chosen hobby is ”the only time in my life when I feel proud of myself.” Shot over three years with visceral, immersive cinematography and stirring editing, every physical and emotional blow in Joe’s life lands hard. Loyola grad Jeff Unay’s portrait of this fighter up against the ropes ducks the tired trappings and offers an unforgettable look at the punishment we endure in pursuit of self respect, over the cheap thrills of victory. -NS

A single act of fatal violence has turned a family upside down, but the murder follows a dark series of precursors that transcend multiple generations. Paris, who killed his 4-year-old sister when he was 13, recounts his life before and after the incident from prison. As this film unravels the psyches of its subjects, it explores the behavioral and genetic traits that Paris’ family members share. His mother, Charity, struggles to reconcile the brutal act of her son with the forgiveness she seeks on a daily basis. Paris remains close with his grandmother, whose sinister, melodramatic past is a source of pride for her. In this fascinating true crime story, secrets hide in plain sight, but the future remains obscured. -KM
How do you talk about something that’s as large as history itself, but also right outside your front door? Angelique Molina centers her essay on gentrification on the residents of View Park, an L.A. neighborhood that wears its affluence, and its blackness, proudly. Beyond a legacy of red-lining and block-busting, she finds an older generation fighting hard to maintain their neighborhood’s identity and younger one who can no longer afford a house in the only place that feels like home. Though far from sanguine about the fate of View Park or the will of people on all sides to attack the problem in earnest, Molina captures the bitter with the sweet, both the anxiety of home-owners on the edge and the kinship that keeps them upright. -JK

In 2015 Nick Cave began an eight-month term as artist-in-residence at Louisiana’s Shreveport Regional Arts Council. Most known for his performances involving colorful, towering sound suits, Cave’s project for the summer was to involve community organizations in a four-part performance titled “As Is.” AS IS by Nick Cave follows the creation of this performance in Shreveport—we speak with those involved behind the elaborate suits and beaded pieces that comprise the stunning and ultimately uplifting show as they dance and work. Through observational shots of the crew, artists, and communities that made this show happen, this film paints a picture filled with collaboration and hope; a space where everyone can feel free to be as one is. -AL Filmmaker in attendance.

After suffering a crippling personal loss, Clive is thrown into a grief-stricken daze, stacking up empty days and empty bottles. To the rescue comes Trevor, an iconoclastic former professor who’s recently been pried from his tenured university job. Trevor all but drags Clive bodily to the farm out in Cut Off where he’s holed up like a Cajun Colonel Kurtz, attracting a personal coterie that’s half-encounter therapy group, half-Mansonesque kill-cult. Under Trevor’s diabolical tutelage, Clive gouges away at the layers of delusion sealing him off from the truth: about his former life, his imperilled future, and Trevor’s true designs. Cut Off matches regional flair with a paranoid streak a mile wide. -JK Filmmaker in attendance.

Papa Grows Funk carved out a successful place for themselves in the New Orleans live music scene, playing to loyal crowds of locals and tourists every Monday night at The Maple Leaf. Cobbled together in 2000 from local jam sessions, the band eventually became a mainstay in the Crescent City and booked international tours. But defining success proves to be as murky as achieving happiness. Do U Want It? revisits the band’s career as they prepare for a final tour and album recording before a planned hiatus. The film asks the eternal question for New Orleans’ performers: in a city where you can make it as musician, is that enough? Does success mean always leaving your home behind? -KM
In a picturesque farm community, two couples must grapple with their emotions on the eve of an execution. The parents of the victim, a gay man in his early 20s, reluctantly drive to the prison, hoping for closure in seeing the killer brought to justice. At the same time, the parents of the killer sit helplessly in their dimly lit kitchen as their son is executed. Presenting a heartbreaking portrait of guilt and poisoned love, the parents cling to each other, blame each other, and mourn their son’s tormented life. Though the film grapples with a politically charged crime, after the layers of the story are slowly peeled away, what is left are issues of family and the importance of support in the home. -LA

During the good times of Mardi Gras, few people stop to ask questions. In festival alum Jorge Torres-Torres’ new feature something sinister stalks the streets of New Orleans, taking advantage of that festive chaos. As we weave in and out of parades and around street corners along with wild revelers and dazzling performers, it becomes clear that not everyone has the same idea of a good time. Latching on to a group of friends, a stranger immerses herself in their connections to each other and the city, even as she picks them off one by one. Part narrative, part documentation of America’s biggest celebration, Fat Tuesday leads you through location footage of the closing week of Mardi Gras with a firm, blood drenched hand. -AL Filmmaker in attendance. For the residents of the idyllic St. Bernard Parish on the outer perimeter of the Louisiana bayou, identity is a source of immense pride as well as some sadness. Through recreations and interviews, we learn of the immense influence that this small community has had on American history and culture: from participating in every American war to contributing to the invention of jazz. Recent revelations about the true ancestry of the group—that they are descended from immigrants from the Canary Islands—have transformed the way that the residents view themselves. Through the community members’ interviews we can see an insistence that their contribution to US history and culture not be forgotten like their ancestors’. -LA Filmmaker in attendance.

Developed at a whirlwind pace, hyped to the gills, dumped on the market with no support, and abandoned within a year: the story of the Power Glove, 1989’s hottest video gaming accessory and the world’s first whiff of massmarket virtual reality, is hardly unique in the annals of retail, but its cultural impact runs deep. Power of Glove’s oral history revels in chunky 8-bit futurism: cyberpunk fashion statements, neon VHS eye-candy, and heavy machine-made sounds (via a banging synthwave score by Magic Sword). As an enduring tribe of Glove hackers and enthusiasts already knows, futurist promises have an inspirational power no matter how shoddily they’re fulfilled, and limitlessness sometimes comes wrapped in cheap plastic. -JK
Maisha and Brandon are moving in opposite directions: she’s changing majors, leaving town for a new school, taking a leap of faith. He’s talking about settling down, starting a family, hoping to heal some of the scars his own father left in raising him. For the moment, though, they’re still together, unified by habit and comfort, but above all by their shared devastation at the daily injustices to which they’re subject as young African-Americans, and their shared resolve to keep pushing back. As it weaves the love story at its center, Woke remains world-weary yet open-hearted, looking outward, surveying the voices and faces of the righteously indignant class of 2017. -JK

Artist Statement: Up on the North Point a downpour of instants tease their way into our sight, but never fully form. Shutter-induced memories reduced to speckles, dissipating into fog. I want to go home. These images were meant to show us what goes where - but I can’t make out the path. Maybe we should lay them all out on the floor and try to put the pieces back together. In another five days, I’ll need to leave.

Filmmaker Programs In addition to the annual New Orleans Film Festival, the New Orleans Film Society invests year-round in filmmaker professional development programs designed to nurture diverse voices in filmmaking in the American South. These programs and partnerships are designed to build filmmaker networks, hone their craft, and develop sustainable creative careers.
SOUTHERN PRODUCERS LAB
Launching in spring of 2018, the Southern Producers Lab is an intensive, pioneering professional development program for producers working in the South. The core of the program is an immersive lab during which 8-10 participants from around the Southeastern U.S. converge with industry leaders and seasoned producers for a series of workshops, one-on-one mentorship sessions, case studies, and skill-building seminars.
PITCH PERFECT
Founded in 2011 in response to the dearth of pitching opportunities for Southern filmmakers, Pitch Perfect offers a chance for college students and emerging directors to practice the art of pitching. In this annual competition, film students and directors from the American South have just three minutes to pitch their next dream project to a panel of film professionals who offer on-the-spot feedback on their pitches. The competition includes four rounds: student narrative, student documentary, non-student narrative, and non-student documentary. The winners in each category receive a prize package to go towards the production of their winning idea. This year, the non-student documentary competition at NOFF is supported by the Tribeca Film Institute under the banner of the IF/Then Documentary Short Film Program and offers the winner a $20,000 cash award and a year of mentorship.
#CREATELOUISIANA
To champion Louisiana-based talent and support the entertainment industries that are integral to our region, the New Orleans Film Society is an institutional partner with local nonprofit #CreateLouisiana, collectively offering grant packages to in-state filmmakers. Previous grants that NOFS has funded in part include a $50,000 cash grant awarded in 2015 for a short film showcasing Louisiana talent in front of and behind the camera; a $32,500 cash grant with lead sponsor TV5 MONDE USA for a film that celebrates the deep connection to French and Francophone culture in Louisiana; a $40,000 documentary feature grant that provides $10,000 in cash and $30,000 in post-production services; and a $1,250 travel grant to a Louisiana-based filmmaker working as part of a diverse core team to attend the 2018 Tribeca Film Institute Network and pitch their prospect to investors, distributors and financiers.
THE MAGNIFYING GLASS
This suite of three micro-grants supports small-budget films from Louisiana filmmakers investigating social injustices within their communities. These grants support those who know injustice firsthand and are able to bring awareness to specific injustices within these communities through short-form film. Founded in 2016, this micro-grant program is supported by Artless Media. Funded shorts screen during the NOFF.
THE COOL COOPERATIVE DIRECTOR’S PROGRAM
Working in conjunction with the New Orleans Film Society, the COOL Cooperative Director’s Program seeks to support emerging talent from the New Orleans Film Festival alumni community. This program offers the opportunity for Louisiana filmmakers to work collaboratively with The COOL Cooperative staff and COOL Creators (students) to develop and produce a new short film. COOL Creators are involved in learning opportunities in all phases of production. Filmmakers receive production funding of $5000 and approved in-kind production support from The COOL Cooperative.
TRICENTENNIAL STORY INCUBATOR
As the City of New Orleans prepares for its 300th Anniversary celebration, the New Orleans Film Society teams up with NOVAC, The Mayor’s Office of Cultural Economy/Film New Orleans, #CreateLouisiana, and Kickstarter to celebrate and share our rich history and culture by cultivating and funding five short films from New Orleans filmmakers. The five selected film projects will receive mentorship from Kickstarter to aid in the creation of dynamic crowdfunding campaigns to raise $5,000 in funding for their films. Provided they raise their $5,000, they will then be awarded an additional $5,000 in project support.
EMERGING VOICES
The Emerging Voices Mentorship program was created in 2014 and founded on the principle that, in order to create a more diverse storytelling landscape, filmmakers of color in Louisiana need greater access to gatekeepers. In its inaugural year, the program sought to fill the lack of opportunities for local AfricanAmerican and Black Diaspora directors to meaningfully connect with industry leaders, expand career opportunities, and to help strengthen the local film community. In 2015, Emerging Voices expanded to include all filmmakers of color based in Louisiana, adding an even more vast and diverse perspective to the program and reflecting the depth and breadth of the state. Applicants include filmmakers with narrative or documentary projects (shorts, features or web-based), experimental films and new media projects in the development/pre-production stage. Once selected, filmmakers are paired with a film industry leader who acts as a mentor through one-on-one meetings during the annual New Orleans Film Festival. Mentees also participate in short intensive meetings with other industry professionals during the NOFF Industry Exchange to pitch their projects and build further connections. 76

JAMES LAXTON ON MOONLIGHT
‘
To me a successful project is based on
trust. Trust in my colleagues from the producers
and director to the actors, the crew and the
equipment house to the editors and post house—
all collaborating to bring something meaningful
to the screen. And trust that following my instincts
is the best path to telling an honest story.
James Laxton has been universally lauded for his uniquely stunning imagery in Moonlight. He sensitively brings the viewer into the psyche of the characters, immersed within the lush Monet greens and salty blues of the Florida landscape. VER applauds cinematographer James Laxton on his many Moonlight honors for this Best Picture Oscar® winner.

Not All Movie Stars Shine In Front Of The Camera
While we’re celebrating more than 200 talented filmmakers who are attending and showing here at the festival, we would like to take a moment to honor these industry pioneers.
Teddy and Doris Solomon built a theatre empire. What began as after-school work in his family’s silent movie house became an active career in the industry that spanned seven decades. With Doris by his side, Teddy grew his family’s single movie screen into more than 600 theaters and drive-ins spread across the country. He was elected president of the National Association of Theatre Owners, where he led the reform of film bidding practices that continue to shape the industry. He built and opened the first stadiumstyle megaplex in Greater New Orleans. He was also the catalyst that established the popular tax incentive programs for filmmakers that have made Louisiana known as “Hollywood South.” And, nearly a quarter of a century ago, Teddy and Doris helped start the New Orleans Film Society. What inspired them to become so involved and invested in the movie business? It was the talent, passion and hard work of filmmakers like you. It gave Teddy and Doris great joy to share their love for movies with countless others. Because when the lights dim and the projector rolls in a darkened theater... it’s pure magic.
