We produce the Academy-accredited® New Orleans Film Festival annually and invest year-round in building a vibrant film culture in the South to share transformative cinematic experiences with audiences, and connect dynamic filmmakers to career-advancing resources.

This year we proudly present the most diverse line-up in the New Orleans Film Festival’s history: 53% of films are helmed by female and gender non-conforming directors, and 45% are by directors of color. From a young age, Trombone Shorty has been inseparable from his horn. So when his mother, Lois, brought him to see Bo Diddley at Jazz Fest, he took it with him and played along with the legendary bluesman from the crowd. Diddley took notice and had

the crowd pass the 4-year-old boy and his horn to the stage. He blew everyone away. Today, Trombone Shorty closes out the final day of Jazz Fest himself, and other members of his talented family (The Andrews) split time between their hometown and touring the world.

Each year, more films find their way to larger audiences over a wider and wider variety of platforms. The scale is staggering and the ink shows no signs of drying on the map of the 21st-century distribution model. Our panelists make it their business to stay on the frontier, so now’s the time to benefit from their experience.

In times of crisis, what is the role of those who make and engage with film: do we keep calm and continue our work, or reposition to engage a country’s concerns? A conversation probing the prerogatives and responsibilities of artists, critics, and audiences alike in the post-election upheaval.

Sam (Alan Cumming), a former member of ACT UP, remembers that pain all too well. Memories of those years pervade his artistic work and have pushed him to abandon painting in favor of a new video project connected to a close friend whom he lost to AIDS. Even as other friends seem to move on, tt’s a past he can’t escape, until he meets Braeden. So Frank and Inez find themselves, biking the same route to a party. Picking their way across parks and side streets, they traverse their shared history with far-from-rosy recollection. Every twist of their lacerating conversation is captured by the cameras perched on their helmets, a safety precaution that could become an emotional liability. In the midst of the beautiful desolation of Iceland, Einar sits in an isolated cabin. His memories inform a growing depression and in a moment of desperation, he calls his ex, Gunnar, hoping that their conversation will temporarily alleviate his despair. Hearing the frightened and hopeless edge in his voice, Gunnar sets out in the middle of the night in an effort to assuage Einar’s fears. As they spend the next few days together, the seclusion and their memories become an all-consuming prison. Gunnar feels a creeping paranoia and is unable to discern what is real and what is fabricated. Einar’s sudden disappearance throws Gunnar into total chaos, seemingly without hope of escape. A film ostensibly about a lonely dog groomer’s twin quests, to find love and to fund his all-cat remake of Carrie, She’s Allergic to Cats angles after darker, deeper-swimming fish. Shooting across tape and digital formats, director Michael Reich slathers on pops, skips, noise, and other magnetic crust with an almost precognitive aesthetic sense, building up a visual fabric that’s one part giallo, one part Men’s Wearhouse commercial c.1992, and one part Stephen King straight-to-video cheese. Bucking the specter (everywhere in our post-Too Many Cooks moment) of weirdness for its own sake, Reich reaches down into his story’s molten core: the unwell subconscious writhing behind the painfully composed face of the American male. -JK Filmmaker in attendance.

As we follow each family member through their daily duties and private moments, we are also privy to the events taking place on another plane of existence, parallel to, yet removed from the world of the living. Victor hires Dorian, a skeptical documentarian, and Zuhair, a cameraman, to follow him to France for the reading of his father’s will. Victor intends to use film to craft a positive narrative around his family’s wealth, masking his father’s less than savory business tactics and a history of exploitation in French West Africa. As they travel across France, it becomes clear that Victor’s often comedic delusions do not come close to the bizarre reality of who his father was. Horace Tapscott came up in 1950s Los Angeles as a composer and piano player, relying on the support of the local black musician’s union and the Watts Happening Coffee House. Later forming the Pan-Afrikan Arkestra, he promoted self-love in the black community, which he saw mainstream white American culture rejecting as militantism. New Orleans-born director Barbara McCullough takes us on a lyrical journey through Tapscott’s oral history and performances. Tapscott’s evocative storytelling about the status of black men, jazz, and resistance in mid-century America resonates today as the country grapples with the legacy and future of the Civil Rights Movement. -KM

Manuel Chirinos, lead singer of “Los Plebes de Olancho,” tells his perilous story to a radio DJ in the United States where he has fled from his hometown of Olancho, Honduras. Back home his band was the preferred entertainment for the drug cartels whose power touches every part of local life. Manuel’s bandmates take us through gorgeous, peaceful afternoons with family, fun but unprofitable shows at neighborhood parties, and anxious, clandestine nights performing for Olancho’s jefes. Even after surviving a harrowing escape across the U.S. border, Manuel longs for the dangerous but beautiful place whose beauty permeates the melodies of his songs. -KM

In 1909, a Paiute runner named Willie Boy led a posse of deputies on a legendary chase through the California desert. 60 years later, Robert Blake played Willie in the film. Almost 50 years after that, the arid Paiute homeland is trod by retirees in loud golf pants, irrigated by a massive aquifer to quench the desert into lush submission. Piling up loopy and scathing images (a golf cart shaped like Bob Hope’s face, a wine-sipping partygoer in a hot-pink buckskin) Robinson Devor (Zoo, Police Beat) forgoes any attempt at linearity, taking an almost geological view of time in the certainty that, no matter how hard it may be to see with the naked eye, history obeys cycles. -JK

In this immersive, experimental documentary, the world belongs to Hatsune Miku, a Japanese vocaloid, or synthesizer voice, played by a manga character with blue pigtails. Her backstory and personality have been largely created as fan fiction. Director Ann Oren joins hundreds of girls in taking on the role of Hatsune Miku in Tokyo’s manic cosplay universe, where diehard devotees buy tickets to see a hologram of the virtual goddess perform for sold-out arenas. Along the way, the motives of cosplayers and Hatsune Miku obsessives are alternately exposed and concealed. Both disorienting and delightful, The World Is Mine reveals how fantasy and identity performance can spur romance, friendship, self-confidence, and isolation. -KM

Legend regards San Juanito as a local Robin Hood, and the locals use explosive hammers, detonated by swinging them onto the ground, to recreate a centuries-old battle where the wealthy and the poor struggled over the same land. Exhilarating footage and bold filmmaking brings the viewer into the excitement of the festival which has divided the generations of the community. For local style celebrity Papa Swegué, a slow, thoughtful promenade moves passersby to stop and admire him. In the traditional ceremonies of the Uíge Province elders mock the ostentatious nature of banga while donning their own fashionable garb. With hands clasped and hair blowing in the wind, the image of Thelma and Louise speeding across the desert in a powder blue convertible has influenced generations of women. Thelma and Louise spoke to empowerment, strength, and freedom, and inspired a national survey created by Jennifer Townsend, the director of Catching Sight of Thelma and Louise. Over several months, she collected the thoughts and impacts of this iconic film. Now, over 25 years later, Townsend is reopening the conversation with those original survey participants. Through interviews with fans and some of the actors, including Christopher McDonald, audiences are brought into an intimate discussion of the many realities of being a woman in society. -AL

Set against the backdrop of Ferguson, Missouri, in the years surrounding Michael Brown’s death, For Ahkeem follows the story of Daje Shelton. She’s growing up in St. Louis, where she’s been court ordered to attend a school for troubled youth. In Daje’s world, the dramatics of teenage life–friends, grades, boyfriends, and eventually a pregnancy–collide with the stark struggles of being black in the United States. Generationally entrenched poverty and systematic racism tear apart the world around Daje, as she loses classmates to gun violence and witnesses the justice system’s failure in response to Brown’s death. Nevertheless, she learns from her commanding mother and endeavors to grow up with grace and determination. -KM

Jheri Jones is a vivacious, life-loving transsexual woman. At 74 she still goes out dancing and is the loving matriarch of a family of four sons and two grandchildren—two of her sons live in her own home and the rest are close by. Their family is tight-knit now, but Jheri’s gender transition in deeply religious Mississippi left a stain that they are still trying to overcome. After the passing of her ex-wife and mother of her children, each of the Joneses must learn to move forward with their own personal struggles and with each other in everything from explaining the intricacies of gender to the grandkids to figuring out their own identity. Paris, who killed his 4-year-old sister when he was 13, recounts his life before and after the incident from prison. As this film unravels the psyches of its subjects, it explores the behavioral and genetic traits that Paris’ family members share. His mother, Charity, struggles to reconcile the brutal act of her son with the forgiveness she seeks on a daily basis. Paris remains close with his grandmother, whose sinister, melodramatic past is a source of pride for her. In this fascinating true crime story, secrets hide in plain sight, but the future remains obscured. -KM

How do you talk about something that’s as large as history itself, but also right outside your front door? Angelique Molina centers her essay on gentrification on the residents of View Park, an L.A. neighborhood that wears its affluence, and its blackness, proudly. Beyond a legacy of red-lining and block-busting, she finds an older generation fighting hard to maintain their neighborhood’s identity and younger one who can no longer afford a house in the only place that feels like home. Though far from sanguine about the fate of View Park or the will of people on all sides to attack the problem in earnest, Molina captures the bitter with the sweet, both the anxiety of home-owners on the edge and the kinship that keeps them upright. -JK

In 2015 Nick Cave began an eight-month term as artist-in-residence at Louisiana’s Shreveport Regional Arts Council. Most known for his performances involving colorful, towering sound suits, Cave’s project for the summer was to involve community organizations in a four-part performance titled “As Is.” AS IS by Nick Cave follows the creation of this performance in Shreveport—we speak with those involved behind the elaborate suits and beaded pieces that comprise the stunning and ultimately uplifting show as they dance and work. A journalist and documentary filmmaker, Anjanette Lavert was previously Associate Director for the Documentary Forum at City College of New York and is the founder of the Atlanta Documentary Meetup. She is a professor in Documentary Film at Spelman College.

Leah Mahan has been nominated by the Directors Guild of America for Outstanding Directorial Achievement. She has been a fellow at the Sundance Institute Documentary Editing and Story Lab. Her 2013 film Come Hell or High Water: The Battle for Turkey Creek won an Audience Award at NOFF.

After suffering a crippling personal loss, Clive is thrown into a grief-stricken daze, stacking up empty days and empty bottles. To the rescue comes Trevor, an iconoclastic former professor who’s recently been pried from his tenured university job. Trevor all but drags Clive bodily to the farm out in Cut Off where he’s holed up like a Cajun Colonel Kurtz, attracting a personal coterie that’s half-encounter therapy group, half-Mansonesque kill-cult. Under Trevor’s diabolical tutelage, Clive gouges away at the layers of delusion sealing him off from the truth: about his former life, his imperilled future, and Trevor’s true designs. Papa Grows Funk carved out a successful place for themselves in the New Orleans live music scene, playing to loyal crowds of locals and tourists every Monday night at The Maple Leaf. Cobbled together in 2000 from local jam sessions, the band eventually became a mainstay in the Crescent City and booked international tours. But defining success proves to be as murky as achieving happiness. Do U Want It? revisits the band’s career as they prepare for a final tour and album recording before a planned hiatus. The film asks the eternal question for New Orleans’ performers: in a city where you can make it as musician, is that enough? Does success mean always leaving your home behind? -KM

In a picturesque farm community, two couples must grapple with their emotions on the eve of an execution. The parents of the victim, a gay man in his early 20s, reluctantly drive to the prison, hoping for closure in seeing the killer brought to justice. At the same time, the parents of the killer sit helplessly in their dimly lit kitchen as their son is executed. Presenting a heartbreaking portrait of guilt and poisoned love, the parents cling to each other, blame each other, and mourn their son’s tormented life. Though the film grapples with a politically charged crime, after the layers of the story are slowly peeled away, what is left are issues of family and the importance of support in the home. -LA

Latching on to a group of friends, a stranger immerses herself in their connections to each other and the city, even as she picks them off one by one. Developed at a whirlwind pace, hyped to the gills, dumped on the market with no support, and abandoned within a year: the story of the Power Glove, 1989’s hottest video gaming accessory and the world’s first whiff of massmarket virtual reality, is hardly unique in the annals of retail, but its cultural impact runs deep. Power of Glove’s oral history revels in chunky 8-bit futurism: cyberpunk fashion statements, neon VHS eye-candy, and heavy machine-made sounds (via a banging synthwave score by Magic Sword). As an enduring tribe of Glove hackers and enthusiasts already knows, futurist promises have an inspirational power no matter how shoddily they’re fulfilled, and limitlessness sometimes comes wrapped in cheap plastic. -JK

Maisha and Brandon are moving in opposite directions: she’s changing majors, leaving town for a new school, taking a leap of faith. He’s talking about settling down, starting a family, hoping to heal some of the scars his own father left in raising him. For the moment, though, they’re still together, unified by habit and comfort, but above all by their shared devastation at the daily injustices to which they’re subject as young African-Americans, and their shared resolve to keep pushing back. As it weaves the love story at its center, Woke remains world-weary yet open-hearted, looking outward, surveying the voices and faces of the righteously indignant class of 2017. -JK

Filmmaker Programs In addition to the annual New Orleans Film Festival, the New Orleans Film Society invests year-round in filmmaker professional development programs designed to nurture diverse voices in filmmaking in the American South. These programs and partnerships are designed to build filmmaker networks, hone their craft,and develop sustainable creative careers.

SOUTHERN PRODUCERS LAB

Launching in spring of 2018, the Southern Producers Lab is an intensive, pioneering professional development program for producers working in the South. The core of the program is an immersive lab during which 8-10 participants from around the Southeastern U.S. converge with industry leaders and seasoned producers for a series of workshops, one-on-one mentorship sessions, case studies, and skill-building seminars.

PITCH PERFECT

Founded in 2011 in response to the dearth of pitching opportunities for Southern filmmakers, Pitch Perfect offers a chance for college students and emerging directors to practice the art of pitching. In this annual competition, film students and directors from the American South have just three minutes to pitch their next dream project to a panel of film professionals who offer on-the-spot feedback on their pitches. The competition includes four rounds: student narrative, student documentary, non-student narrative, and non-student documentary. The winners in each category receive a prize package to go towards the production of their winning idea. This year, the non-student documentary competition at NOFF is supported by the Tribeca Film Institute under the banner of the IF/Then Documentary Short Film Program and offers the winner a $20,000 cash award and a year of mentorship.

#CREATELOUISIANA

To champion Louisiana-based talent and support the entertainment industries that are integral to our region, the New Orleans Film Society is an institutional partner with local nonprofit #CreateLouisiana, collectively offering grant packages to in-state filmmakers. Previous grants that NOFS has funded in part include a $50,000 cash grant awarded in 2015 for a short film showcasing Louisiana talent in front of and behind the camera; a $32,500 cash grant with lead sponsor TV5 MONDE USA for a film that celebrates the deep connection to French and Francophone culture in Louisiana; a $40,000 documentary feature grant that provides $10,000 in cash and $30,000 in post-production services; and a $1,250 travel grant to a Louisiana-based filmmaker working as part of a diverse core team to attend the 2018 Tribeca Film Institute Network and pitch their prospect to investors, distributors and financiers.

THE MAGNIFYING GLASS

This suite of three micro-grants supports small-budget films from Louisiana filmmakers investigating social injustices within their communities. These grants support those who know injustice firsthand and are able to bring awareness to specific injustices within these communities through short-form film. Founded in 2016, this micro-grant program is supported by Artless Media. Funded shorts screen during the NOFF.

THE COOL COOPERATIVE DIRECTOR’S PROGRAM

Working in conjunction with the New Orleans Film Society, the COOL Cooperative Director’s Program seeks to support emerging talent from the New Orleans Film Festival alumni community. This program offers the opportunity for Louisiana filmmakers to work collaboratively with The COOL Cooperative staff and COOL Creators (students) to develop and produce a new short film. COOL Creators are involved in learning opportunities in all phases of production. Filmmakers receive production funding of $5000 and approved in-kind production support from The COOL Cooperative.

TRICENTENNIAL STORY INCUBATOR

As the City of New Orleans prepares for its 300th Anniversary celebration, the New Orleans Film Society teams up with NOVAC, The Mayor’s Office of Cultural Economy/Film New Orleans, #CreateLouisiana, and Kickstarter to celebrate and share our rich history and culture by cultivating and funding five short films from New Orleans filmmakers. The five selected film projects will receive mentorship from Kickstarter to aid in the creation of dynamic crowdfunding campaigns to raise $5,000 in funding for their films. Provided they raise their $5,000, they will then be awarded an additional $5,000 in project support.

EMERGING VOICES

The Emerging Voices Mentorship program was created in 2014 and founded on the principle that, in order to create a more diverse storytelling landscape, filmmakers of color in Louisiana need greater access to gatekeepers. In its inaugural year, the program sought to fill the lack of opportunities for local AfricanAmerican and Black Diaspora directors to meaningfully connect with industry leaders, expand career opportunities, and to help strengthen the local film community. In 2015, Emerging Voices expanded to include all filmmakers of color based in Louisiana, adding an even more vast and diverse perspective to the program and reflecting the depth and breadth of the state. Applicants include filmmakers with narrative or documentary projects (shorts, features or web-based), experimental films and new media projects in the development/pre-production stage. Once selected, filmmakers are paired with a film industry leader who acts as a mentor through one-on-one meetings during the annual New Orleans Film Festival. Mentees also participate in short intensive meetings with other industry professionals during the NOFF Industry Exchange to pitch their projects and build further connections. 76

Emerging Voices BRON MOYI is a filmmaker based out of New Orleans, Louisiana. He’s worked primarily in the film industry since 2010 and has since garnered over 30 credits to his name in both the art and camera department. He is particularly drawn to coming-of-age stories.

ALEJANDRO DE LOS RIOS is a Cuban-Venezuelan writer and filmmaker with experience writing for ESPN the Magazine, VICE, the Associated Press, and Deadspin and directing nearly a dozen short films, in addition to news documentaries, music videos, and commercials.

PROJECT: Round Lake Road (Narrative Short) A barely teenage boy is exposed to a night of drugs, sex, and violence in a small town in Florida.

NICHOLAS MANUEL PINO made his acting and narrative

MENTOR: Moira Griffin is the Executive Director, Production, Creative Labs for 21st Century Fox where she oversees development labs for writers, directors, and producers for TV and Film. Previously she was the Head of Diversity Initiatives at Sundance.

ASLI OZYENGINER is a New Orleans-based Turkish

filmmaker and writer. After studying Western Literature in Istanbul, she shifted her focus towards Visual Arts while at Dartmouth College graduate school. Her work focuses on displacement, notions of identity, belonging and forms of intimacy.

PROJECT: Taxidermist (Documentary Short)

Taxidermist explores the human obsession with preservation through Rick, an ex-air force veteran and taxidermist living in New Orleans.

MENTOR: Sabrina Schmidt Gordon is an award-winning documentary filmmaker. Her latest film, Quest, premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in January 2017.

PHILIP WILLIAMSON JR is a Creative Director at The Colored Section. As a filmmaker, Philip’s work has been showcased by PBS and HBO. His latest short documentary, “After Claudetteia,” was selected for Artless Media’s 2016 Magnifying Glass grant. PROJECT: Perfectly Audible (Narrative Short)

A filmmaker examines change and life in New Orleans’ St. Roch historic neighborhood through the lens of his family who’s lived there for four generations.

JASMIN MARA LÓPEZ is a New Orleans-based journalist, radio producer, and youth media educator. Born in Los Angeles with familial roots in México, her childhood was impacted by issues experienced on both sides of the U.S.- México border. PROJECT: Silent Beauty (New Media) Using super 8 silent home movies and incorporating sound design that mimics the sounds of hearing loss, “Silent Beauty” is an experimental autobiographical exploration of a family history with abuse and a culture of silence. Not All Movie Stars Shine In Front Of The Camera

While we’re celebrating more than 200 talented filmmakers who are attending and showing here at the festival, we would like to take a moment to honor these industry pioneers.

Teddy and Doris Solomon built a theatre empire. What began as after-school work in his family’s silent movie house became an active career in the industry that spanned seven decades. With Doris by his side, Teddy grew his family’s single movie screen into more than 600 theaters and drive-ins spread across the country. He was elected president of the National Association of Theatre Owners, where he led the reform of film bidding practices that continue to shape the industry. He built and opened the first stadiumstyle megaplex in Greater New Orleans. He was also the catalyst that established the popular tax incentive programs for filmmakers that have made Louisiana known as “Hollywood South.” And, nearly a quarter of a century ago, Teddy and Doris helped start the New Orleans Film Society. What inspired them to become so involved and invested in the movie business? It was the talent, passion and hard work of filmmakers like you. It gave Teddy and Doris great joy to share their love for movies with countless others. Because when the lights dim and the projector rolls in a darkened theater... it’s pure magic.
