Welcome Dinner for Ministers Hosted by Minister Ed Fast in Vancouver

Minister Fast welcomed his counterparts at Queen Elizabeth Park, poised at the highest point in Vancouver, Canada’s largest city on its Pacific coast.

Minister Fast took the opportunity to reacquaint himself with his colleagues, and to meet other representatives visiting Canada.

Working Breakfast on the Pacific Coast

A working breakfast for Ministers and Senior Economic Officials (SEOs) was hosted by the Ambassador of Canada to ASEAN Donald Bobiash in the Marine Room of the Westin Bayshore Hotel.

Meeting with the Honourable Christy Clark, Premier of British Columbia Premier Christy Clark reaffirmed British Columbia’s commitment to develop its liquefied natural gas (LNG) industry, in partnership with ASEAN countries.

Premier Clark has had trade missions to Asia including visits to Malaysia and Singapore in May 2014.

“British Columbia is Canada’s Asia Pacific Gateway and as we ensure our LNG sector meets its full potential, Southeast Asia is a key region” - Premier Clark

Press Conference in Vancouver

The headquarters of Port Metro Vancouver, North America’s premier gateway to Asia-Pacific and its dynamic economies, was the backdrop for the initial press conference kicking off the Roadshow. Minister Fast and his guests from ASEAN conveyed to the media the growing opportunities which business relations between Canada and the region represented.

Canada-ASEAN Energy Linkages “Natural Gas Opportunities in the Pacific Century” Engagement and Dialogue and Luncheon Hosted by the Province of British Columbia at the Pan Pacific Hotel, located atop Canada Place at the heart of downtown Vancouver’s waterfront, speakers from British Columbia and ASEAN gave presentations on opportunities for cooperation in oil and LNG sectors.

Canada is the 5th largest producer of energy in the world, producing about 6% of global energy supplies. It is the world's largest producer of natural uranium, producing one-third of global supply, and is also the world's leading producer of hydro-electricity, accounting for 13% of global production.

Roundtable with Asia Pacific Gateway and Corridor Initiative (APGCI) Partners

A special session organised by Transport Canada and their partners focussed on opportunities for further cooperation on energy and transportation corridors and advantages , particularly within the experience of Canada’s own Asia Pacific Gateway and Corridor Initiative (APGCI). The APGCI reinforces the competitiveness of Canada’s ports, rail, road, airport, pipeline, and infrastructure, capitalizing on the advantage that the Pacific ports have in terms of sailing time to the Asia-Pacific region.

Mr. Robin Silvester, President and CEO Port Metro Vancouver, hosted a boat tour giving the ASEAN delegation the opportunity to see Burrard Inlet first hand, including key export/import terminals for containerized cargo, bulk terminals for natural resources, and marine terminals for energy products.

Welcome Dinner Hosted by the Honourable Teresa Wat, British Columbia’s Minister of International Trade and Minister Responsible for Asia Pacific Strategy and Multiculturalism The program in Vancouver concluded with a dinner hosted by Trade Minister Wat. Deputy Ministers from the Government of British Columbia joined our ASEAN guests at each table, demonstrating the strong and diverse ties between British Columbia and ASEAN.

The ASEAN region ranks sixth in the world as a destination for British Columbia goods exports. Exports to ASEAN markets were valued at $672 million in 2013, a 27% increase over 2012 totals.

Meeting with the Financial Services and Infrastructure Sector in Toronto

The program in Toronto began with a session highlighting Canada’s performance in the financial services and infrastructure sector. Representatives from the Canadian Council on PublicPrivate Partnership and the Toronto Centre provided presentations on Infrastructure and Financial Regulations.

The World Economic Forum has ranked Canadian banks the soundest in the world. Canada’s financial sector is well represented in ASEAN through investments by banks and insurance companies. Public Private Partnership (P3) has a long and successful experience in Canada, and is increasingly involved in bringing that expertise overseas, including the AsiaPacific region.

Luncheon Hosted by Niagara Region Economic Development Department A working lunch was hosted by Niagara Economic Development at Peller Estates, one of Canada’s leading wine exporters.

Niagara is a major gateway to North America. More than $61.9 billion in annual trade value crosses the Niagara U.S./Canada border, along with more than 12.7 million people annually.

The iconic Niagara Falls is the world’s biggest waterfall as measured by water volume flow, which at peak is as much as 6,400 m3 per second. The falls represent one of Canada’s first hydro power generators, a sector in which Canada is today a global leader.

Toronto, Canada’s Business Capital: CN Tower Visit The CN Tower is 553.33 meters high located in downtown Toronto. In 1976 it became the world’s tallest free-standing structure and the world’s tallest tower at the time. The CN Tower is a signature icon of Toronto’s skyline, attracting more than two million international visitors annually. Delegates viewed Canada’s largest city and one of the world’s leading financial centres.

Visit to the Centre for Urban Energy at Ryerson University The Centre for Urban Energy was created in 2010 to provide a unique research and technology demonstration centre devoted to the discovery and commercialization of innovative, practical solutions to urban energy issues.

Canada is one of the most urbanized large countries in the world with over 80% of its population living in cities.

Farewell Reception hosted by Export Development Canada (EDC) At the farewell reception, Minister Fast took the opportunity to thank the delegation for their interest in Canada and hoped that the themes covered in the Roadshow would be reflected in the on-going CanadaASEAN agenda.

EDC has declared the ASEAN region to be a priority for business development based on the prospect of economic growth exceeding global average for the next several years.
