The New DMI EPD The American Angus Association announces a new EPD to appear on all registration materials and weekly Association reports, beginning Friday, March 6. The dry matter intake EPD, formerly referenced as the feed intake EPD, was traditionally calculated in an unpublished format as a component of the residual average daily gain (RADG) EPD and, was most recently introduced in calculations for feed value ($F) (which is a component of $B). The DMI EPD will appear alongside RADG and is reported in pounds of dry matter per day, where lower numbers indicate less intake. DMI EPD is supported by both feed intake data and genomic profile information. This new EPD along with the $EN value will greatly enhance our ability to improve the cost of production for everyone. Why is the DMI EPD an important tool to use? A 1% improvement in feed efficiency has the same economic impact as a 3% increase in rate of gain. Feed accounts for approximately 65% of total beef production costs and 60% of the total cost of calf and yearling finishing systems. The cow-calf segment consumes about 70% of the calories; 30% are used by growing and finishing systems.1 More information is available at www.beefefficiency.org. In 2010 we began testing our sale bulls at the Hays Beef Development Test Station for feed efficiency. In 2013, we installed a GrowSafe System at the bull farm, allowing us the ability to test our sale bulls as well as our young females.
