The   Henry   Bellmon   Office   of   Scholar   Development   and   Undergraduate     Research’s   “Scholar   Abroad”   series   celebrated   its   inaugural   year   in   2014   FOR  INFORMATION  CONTACT   with  courses  on  four  continents.    Our  Scholar  Abroad  programs  are  popular   Dr.  Joshua  Ward,  Director  of   with  OSU’s  outstanding  students  and  known  for  their  exceptional  academic   Scholar  Development  and   benefits.     International   experience   gives   students   a   global   perspective   and  a   Undergraduate  Research   competitive   edge   to   win   prestigious   scholarships,   secure   prominent   jobs,   334  SU  /  405-­‐744-­‐7313   and  gain  admission  to  top  graduate  school  programs.    OSU  Scholar  Abroad  is   [email protected]   expanding  in   2015   and   “Island   Life”   is   the   fifth   of   this   series   of  international   SEE  BACK  FOR  INSTRUCTIONS   programs.   Participants   will   attend   thorough   pre-­‐departure   travel   orientations  and  be  assigned  texts  to  prepare  for  this  experience.    Leading  this  program  is  OSU  Professor  and  Head  of   the   English   Department,   Dr.   Richard   Frohock,   who   specializes   in   Early   American   and   Early   Caribbean   Studies,   in   collaboration  with  Tim  O’Neil,  OSU  Undergraduate  Research  Coordinator  and  Javits  Fellow  in  Early  American  Studies.      

Program  Information   Taught   at  the  University  of  the  West  Indies,   St.  Augustine  campus,  this  program  will  investigate  the  literary  and  cultural   history   of   the   Caribbean   Islands.   Topics   of   interest   include   colonization   and   decolonization,   natural   resources   and   environment,  and  traditional  and  contemporary  forms  of  artistic  expression.  Students  will  also  visit  historical  sites  and   experience   contemporary   life   in   the   Caribbean   through   numerous   excursions.     Readings   for   the   course   will   include   early   explorer   and   settler   accounts,   such   as   Columbus’   letters   (1492)   and   Richard   Ligon’s  A   History   of   Barbados  (1657);   nineteenth-­‐century   novels   like   Cynric   Williams’s  Hamel,   the   Obeah   Man  (1827)  and  The   History   of   Three-­‐Fingered   Jack  (1840);   and   20th  century   and   contemporary   literature,   like   V.S.   Naipaul’s  A   House   for   Mr.  Biswas   (1961),  Jean   Rhys’s,  Wide   Sargasso   Sea  (1966),   and   selections   from  The   Oxford   Collection   of   Caribbean   Short   Stories  (20th  Century).     Students   will   do   some   readings   in   advance   of   travel,   will   keep   journals   of   their   experiences   during   the   trip,   and   will   turn   in  a  major  written  assignment  in  the  fall  2015  semester.    An  itinerary,  subject  to  minor  changes,  is  found  below:

Group  will  depart  together  (optional)  from  the  OKC  airport.    Late  arrival  into  Trinidad.   Class  at  University  of  the  West  Indies.    Tunapuna  guided  tour.    Malick  Folk  Performance.   Tour  of  the  University  of  the  West  Indies  campus  and  class.   Guided  tour  incl.  Chaguanas  Market,  Lion  House,  sugar  factory,  two  temples,  museums.     Class  at  University  of  the  West  Indies.      Boat  tour  of  Caroni  Wetlands  bird  sanctuary.   Autistic  Society  volunteer  activity.    Visit  to  Maracas  Beach.   Independent  Activities  /  Free  Day   Class  at  University  of  the  West  Indies.    Tour  of  Port  of  Spain  (capital)  and  turtle  watching.   Class  at  University  of  the  West  Indies.       Full  day  on  Tobago,  incl.  glass-­‐bottomed  boat,  Fort  King  George,  and  Bucco  Reef.   Class  at  University  of  the  West  Indies.       Group  will  depart  together  (optional)  from  the  Trinidad  airport.    Late  arrival  into  OKC.  

Terms/Conditions,  Scholarship  Support,  and  Application   The  actual  program  fee  is  $2,150,  however,  all  students  accepted  will  receive  substantial  scholarship  support  ($1,000)   bringing   the   cost   down   to   $1,150.     An   additional   scholarship   of   up   to   $250   may   be   available   to   students   requesting   it   by   submitting  an  optional  short  essay  describing  exceptional  financial  need.    Further,  the  OSU  Office  of  Study  Abroad  has   additional   scholarships   that   students   may   apply   for.     The   cost   INCLUDES   three   OSU   credit   hours,   11   nights   accommodation   and   board   (incl.   breakfast,   lunch,   and   dinner),   fees   for   all   group   activities   and   tours   listed   on   this   application,  all  local  group  ground  transportation,  and  all  guest  lectures.    Please  note  that  all  items  are  subject  to  change   without   notice.     The   cost   EXCLUDES   the   round-­‐trip   OKC-­‐Trinidad-­‐OKC   flight   and   all   personal/misc.   expenses   such   as   passport  fees,  any  required  visas  (not  required  for  USA  passports),  excess  baggage  fees,  etc.    

Scholarship   support   is   made   possible   by   The   Henry   Bellmon   Office   of   Scholar   Development   and   Undergraduate   Research.    All  tuition  and  applicable  program  fees,  along  with  the  scholarship  support  you  receive,  will  appear  on  your   Bursar   account   during   April   2015.     No   OSU   tuition   waivers   are   usable   for   this   course.     Note:   April   1,   2015   is   the   deadline   to  drop  this  course  with  no  financial  penalty.  After  that  date,  you  will  be  responsible  for  all  the  course  costs,  including   tuition,   even   though   it   will   not   appear   on   your   Bursar   account   until   spring.     This   is   a   statement   of   interest   and   application   form,   not   an   official   OSU   registration   form.     Completion   of   this   form   will   only   allow   you   to   be   considered   for   acceptance  in  the  program.    You  will  be  notified  within  approximately  one  week  from  submission  of  your  application.
