The   Henry   Bellmon   Office   of   Scholar   Development   and   Undergraduate     Research’s   “Scholar   Abroad”   series   celebrated   its   inaugural   year   in   2014   FOR  INFORMATION  CONTACT   with  courses  on  four  continents.    Our  Scholar  Abroad  programs  are  popular   Dr.  Joshua  Ward,  Director  of   with  OSU’s  outstanding  students  and  known  for  their  exceptional  academic   Scholar  Development  and   benefits.     International   experience   gives   students   a   global   perspective   and   a   Undergraduate  Research   competitive   edge   to   win   prestigious   scholarships,   secure   prominent   jobs,   334  SU  /  405-­‐744-­‐7313   and  gain  admission  to  top  graduate  school  programs.    OSU  Scholar  Abroad  is   [email protected]   expanding   in   2015   and   “Opera   and   the   Outback”   is   the   fourth   of   this   new   SEE  BACK  FOR  INSTRUCTIONS   series   of   international   programs.     Participants   will   attend   thorough   pre-­‐ departure   travel   orientations   and   be   assigned   texts   to   prepare   for   this   experience.     Leading   this   program   is   OSU   Associate  Professor  of  Vocal  Studies,  Dr.  Anne-­‐Marie  Condacse,  in  collaboration  with  Dr.  Joshua  Ward,  OSU  Director  of   Scholar  Development  and  Undergraduate  Research.      

Program  Information   This   program,   which   may   also   be   eligible   for   Honors   College   “special   experience”   credit   if   arranged   in   advance,   will   investigate  (a)  the  cultural  framework  of  Australia’s  music  heritage  and  its  role  in  the  local  community;  (b)  the  backstage   manpower  and  technology  of  the  iconic  Sydney  Opera  House  and  the   commercial  vitality  of  performing  arts  in  Australia;   (c)  Australian  indigenous  performing  arts  heritage;  and  (d)  the  vast  and  mystifying  Australian  Outback.

Students  and  faculty  will  depart  together  (optional)  from  the  OKC  airport.     Orientation  cruise  incl.  Harbour  Bridge,  Sydney  Tower,  and  St  Mary’s  Cathedral.   Sydney  Opera  House  backstage  tour  (7am).    PM  Tosca  performance  by  Puccini  Opera.   Full-­‐day  scenic  tour  incl.  Waradah  Aboriginal  Center  and  Featherdale  Wildlife  Park.   AM  lecture,  PM  unstructured  small  group  activities.    Evening  at  Performing  Arts  Event.   Full-­‐day  tour  incl.  Parliament  House,  National  Gallery,  War  Museum,  local  townships.   AM  lecture,  PM  unstructured  small  group  activities.    Evening  at  Bangarra  Dance  Theater.   Students  and  faculty  depart  Sydney  and  arrive  into  OKC  airport.  

 

This  is  a  general  education  program  that  should  be  of  interest  to  any  OSU  undergraduate  who  wants  to  work  hard  in  this   setting,   accompanied   by   other   OSU   young   scholars.     Ambitious   and   talented   students   interested   in   international   experience   including   Australian   opera,   ballet,   dance,   and   other   performing   arts,   the   performing   arts   as   a   community   commodity  and  business,  the  Australian  Outback  and  Aboriginal  heritage,  or  history   are  welcomed  and  encouraged  to   apply.     The   Office   of   Scholar   Development   and   Undergraduate   Research   also   invites   students   to   visit   (334   SU)   for   advice   on  writing  their  application  essay  or  to  answer  any  questions  applicants  might  have.  

Terms/Conditions,  Scholarship  Support,  and  Application   The  actual  program  fee  is  $3,350,  however,  all  students  accepted  will  receive  substantial  scholarship  support  ($2,000)   bringing   the   cost   down   to   $1,350.     An   additional   scholarship   of   up   to   $500   may   be   available   to   students   requesting   it   by   submitting  an  optional  short  essay  describing  exceptional  financial  need.    Further,  the  OSU  Office  of  Study  Abroad  has   additional   scholarships   that   students   may   apply   for.     The   cost   INCLUDES   three   OSU   credit   hours,   six   nights   hotel   accommodation   (incl.   breakfast),   orientation   cruise   tour,   Sydney   Opera   House   backstage   passes,   two   full-­‐day   excursions   to   the   Blue   Mountains   and   Canberra,   all   local   group   ground   transportation,   and   three   evening   performing   arts   event   admission  tickets.  Please  note  that  all  items  are  subject  to  change  without  notice.    The  cost  EXCLUDES  the  round-­‐trip   OKC-­‐Sydney-­‐OKC  flight  and  all  personal/misc.  expenses,  including  lunches  and  dinners,  etc.    

Scholarship   support   is   made   possible   by   The   Henry   Bellmon   Office   of   Scholar   Development   and   Undergraduate   Research.  All  tuition  and  applicable  program  fees,  along  with  the  scholarship  support  you  receive,  will  appear  on  your   Bursar  account  during  January  2015.    No  OSU  tuition  waivers  are  usable  for  this  course.    Note:  January  20,  2015  is  the   deadline  to  drop  this  course  with  no  financial  penalty.  After  that  date,  you  will  be  responsible  for  all  the  course  costs,   including  tuition,  even  though  it  will  not  appear  on  your  Bursar  account  until  spring.  This  is  a  statement  of  interest  and   application   form,   not   an   official   OSU   registration   form.     Completion   of   this   form   will   only   allow   you   to   be   considered   for   acceptance  in  the  program.    You  will  be  notified  within  approximately  one  week  from  submission  of  your  application.
