ENCOURAGING A POSITIVE SCHOOL CLIMATE KINDNESS IS CONTAGIOUS

STUDENT CONFLICT INFORMATION

Olweus Bullying Prevention Program Clarke County Public Schools is taking proactive steps to stop and prevent bullying by implementing the Olweus Bullying Prevention Program. This research-based school wide “systems-change” program has been used successfully in schools all over the country and around the world with positive results. This program is a coordinated effort among adults in the school to supervise and intervene when any bullying behavior occurs. As part of the program, students participate in class meetings to learn about the effects of bullying, what they can do about it, and how they can work with adults at the school to put a stop to it even as bystanders. What can parents do to support bullying prevention in Clarke County Public Schools? Parents can help by reinforcing antibullying rules at home with their child. Contact your child’s school immediately if you suspect they are being bullied or bullying others. There are resources on the CCPS webpage with helpful information about how to help your child if they are bullied, bully others, or witness bullying.

What can students do if they are bullied or witness bullying? All students are taught anti-bullying rules from an early age which encourages them to tell an adult at home or an adult at school if they or anyone they know is being bullied. Social Conflict vs. Bullying Social conflict is a disagreement or an argument between individuals. Conflicts are normal and have to be handled effectively. A person is bullied when he or she is exposed, repeatedly and over time, to negative actions on the part of one or more other persons, and he or she has difficulty defending himself or herself. Bullying can take many different forms such as hitting, verbal harassment, spreading false rumors, and excluding someone from a group. Cyberbullying occurs when someone uses the Internet, emails, text messages, instant messaging, social media websites, online forums, chat rooms, or other digital technology to harass, threaten, or humiliate another person.

Bullying Reporting System The hardest thing for victims of bullying to do is report it. No student wants to be labeled a “tattle tale” so most victims of bullying stay silent. When they finally come forward to get help, the physical or psychological damage may already be done. Students should report bullying as soon as possible. Therefore, it is critical that reporting bullying be made as simple and confidential as possible. BRIM is designed to do exactly those things: enable students to confidentially report bullying online and help schools keep track of incidents once reported. CCPS has contracted with BRIM to provide students an opportunity to confidentially report instances of bullying. Each school website has a link which will allow students and/or parents to report bullying through an online system. Alerts are automatically sent to school-based administrators who are then responsible for investigating reported issues.
