AFHS ATTENDANCE AND TARDY SCHOOL POLICY In order to maximize student learning, American Fork High School expects students to be in class and persistent in their learning. Studies have shown that when students miss more than 10% of class time learning and long-term education sharply decline. The purpose of the attendance policy is to encourage students to be in class as much as possible. Pre-approved Absence Requests: Students are strongly encouraged to obtain pre-absence approval for missed classes. This is available for family events such as vacations, funerals, weddings, etc. This includes a short form to be filled out after discussions with each of the student’s teachers. These forms are located in the attendance office and should be filled out and turned in at least one week prior to the absence/s. Pre-approved absences will not count as absence totals toward NCs, but do affect perfect attendance recognition. Excused Absences and Tardies: Parents may excuse a student absence by a signed note or by calling the attendance office. Absences should be excused within 10 school days (two weeks). An unexcused absence is considered a truancy if it is not parent excused within 10 school days (two weeks). A tardy is defined as when a student is late to class within the first 20 minutes of class time. After 20 minutes, the student is marked absent. Tardies cannot be “excused.” Each term, upon reaching the 4th parent-excused absence or 4th tardy, students will automatically receive a mark of No Credit (NC) in the class or classes in which those absences or tardies have accumulated. Students with more than 3 excused absences or tardies must attend attendance school* to have the NC removed and receive the academic grade and credit for the class. Unexcused Absences and Truancies: A truancy is a confirmed absence from school or class without prior parent approval and is determined by the school’s administration. Confirmed truancies cannot later be excused by a parent and will result in an NC. An unexcused absence is considered a truancy if it is not parent excused within 10 school days (two weeks). Additionally, students who leave class early without being properly checked-out by a parent or guardian will be considered truant. Required Time for Attendance Make Up: 2 hours for each unexcused absence or truancy. 1 hour for each excused absence above 3 in each period. ½ hour for each tardy above 3 in each period. To make up a single tardy, a student would only be required to attend half of an attendance school session.

Attendance and Tardy School Schedule: (Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays) Room 102 6:15 – 7:15 a.m. Cafeteria 2:30 – 3:30 p.m. Room 118 (lunch) 12:23 – 12:53 p.m. (limited to the first 35 students) Attendance School Costs: ALL lunch make-up sessions cost $5. Attendance make-up before and after school will be offered free of charge until the last three weeks of each term. During the last three weeks of the term, all make-up will cost $5.00 per session. Attendance make-ups for previous terms will cost $5.00 per session. All makeup done with a teacher in the classroom will be made up free of charge throughout the term and during the first 2 weeks of the subsequent term. *Students are encouraged to make up attendance infractions quickly with their teachers in the classroom. This allows for more specific instruction and learning recovery. Make-up credit for a given class period must be done with the teacher of that specific period, and must be made up within 2 weeks of the end of the term. All NC’s MUST be made up within 2 weeks after the term ends.

ACADEMIC ASSISTANCE Your first option should be to speak with your teacher directly; they are best able to help you with specific academic needs. Teachers are available for 30 minutes before school and 30 minutes after school. Check Skyward frequently to keep up to date on assignments and attendance. Flex Policy: The Flex Policy is designed to offer targeted learning remediation and extension during the school day for all students at AFHS. For the last 1/2 hour of 2nd period on most Tuesdays through Fridays, students have the opportunity to go to another classroom or lab in the school to gain extra help, accelerate learning, etc. In order to leave the 2nd period class, a student must have a stamp in their student planner from a teacher or faculty member, and must report to that location. Students who either leave class without a stamp, or do not report to the requested location will be marked truant for 2nd period, resulting in an NC and 2 hours of attendance school. Students must have their planners with them during the school day, and in hand during Flex Time as they move from their 2nd period classroom to their requested location. If a student loses their planner, they must purchase a new one in the financial office for $5.

Math Lab: The Math Lab is held every Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday from 2:30 3:30. Please be on time. The lab supervisor may leave if students are not present during the first 15 minutes. Science Lab: The Science Lab is held every Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday from 2:30 3:30 in room 231.

RENAISSANCE QUALIFICATIONS In order to qualify for Renaissance, students must have a 3.8 GPA or higher, and less than 4 absences or tardies per class (no NCs during the term). Students who qualify for Renaissance for 3 terms in one year earn a Renaissance Letter. Students who meet the same qualifications in subsequent years will earn a Renaissance Bar.

ACADEMIC LETTER QUALIFICATIONS Each department determines its own requirements for earning an academic letter. Please consult the school website for more information.

LATE BUS The Late Bus runs Tuesday through Thursday. It leaves the high school at 3:45 and stops at the following elementary school (in order): Deerfield, Cedar Ridge, Freedom, Legacy, Greenwood.

SCHOOL FEE PAYMENT INFORMATION Before a student is eligible to participate in optional activities (clubs, sports, dances, Driver’s Ed, etc), all of their school fees must be paid. Fees may be paid in the Finance Office or online through links available on the school website.

PARKING: Juniors and seniors who park a vehicle at school are required to purchase a parking sticker; sophomores may be eligible to purchase a permit based on availability through a lottery system after 2nd Semester begins. Student parking is located on the south side of the school. All Parking in the Driver’s Ed Range (fenced-in, southeast corner of the property) is only allowed in BLUE painted stalls and until 2:30pm. After 2:30 all vehicles will be towed. Students are not permitted to park in the north staff/faculty lot, faculty, loading/unloading, seminary, or visitor spots. Parking in those areas could result in a fine, boot, and/or towed. Students parking off school property must abide by city parking laws and posted signs. Students are not permitted to park in the north Staff/faculty lot weekdays 7am – 3pm. Parking fines are issued to vehicles that do not have a valid sticker/pass for that spot. Each ticket may include a fine, which will be added to the student’s financial account and will need to be paid in full by the end of the school year to avoid being sent to collections.

Parking fines range from $10 to $50, payable to the Finance Office. Vehicles will be booted ($50 fine) or towed ($50 fine + towing company’s fee) if they are issued more than 3 tickets. On the 4th ticket of a vehicle with a parking sticker, it will be fined and we will call home; non-stickered vehicles will be booted, towed, fined, and/or reported to the police. Parking Passes purchased MUST be picked up within the first two weeks of school at the Finance Office.
