SCHOOL SAFETY PATROLS Background The district is committed to ensuring that all students are provided with a safe school environment. This includes safety and security in the school building, on school property, on field trips, and while crossing streets in the vicinity of the school. The district believes that cooperating with the AMA School Safety Patrol and Calgary Police Services, the School Safety Patrols program enhances student safety while crossing intersections near schools. Procedures 1. Within the city of Calgary, principals will cooperate with the Calgary Police Service and the AMA School Safety Patrol in promoting traffic safety. Outside the city limits, principals cooperate with the equivalent authorities and associations. 2. In collaboration with the area superintendents and the staff of the school, each principal will decide whether or not the Safety Patrol program will be utilized in the school. The School Safety Patrol program will operate under the joint supervision of the principal, the AMA School Safety Patrol, and the Youth Services section of the Calgary or (outside Calgary) appropriate Police Service. 3. Detailed procedures covering the operating of patrols are established by the appropriate authority in charge of Student Safety Patrols and approved by the principal. 4. The principal’s responsibilities include: 4.1 Determining the location of school safety patrol crossing in consultation with the appropriate traffic personnel and the AMA; 4.2 Advising the school council of the rationale for the decision to have student safety patrols; 4.3 Communicating information on student safety patrols to all parents/legal guardians on a yearly basis; 4.4 Designating, if appropriate, a teacher or other adult supervisor to organize and coordinate school safety patrols, and; 4.5 Ensuring that school patrollers receive training from either the AMA (outside of Calgary) or CPS (in Calgary). 5. Parents’/legal guardians' responsibilities include: 5.1 5.2
Encouraging their child to volunteer to participate in the program, if appropriate and; Completing the consent form on a yearly basis and submitting it to the principal or designate.

7. The district provides liability insurance while students and adults-in-charge are engaged in school safety patrol duties and responsibilities. Approval Date:
