Hackathon 2016: Environment Monitoring Introduction Air-pollution is a global pandemic, especially in our countries China and India. Delhi was ranked as the most polluted city according to WHO 2014. It has slightly improved but it is still a long way to go to reach “healthy” air quality. The India Open Data Association has launched the India Open Environment Data Project last year to tackle this problem and to find a sustainable solution. Our approach is based on open source hard- and software and on the engagement and commitment of the citizens. We’ve developed machines (see specs below) which capture crucial environmental data, send it in real time to our website and provide an easy to understand overview about the air quality in Delhi. We believe that by creating a simple, small, cost effective and easily scalable device that can monitor real time air-quality data and help the community to take necessary actions in improving the conditions around them. From the very beginning SEEED was involved in this project and helped us in identifying the right sensors. Now we want to deepen this collaboration through this event and include Chinese knowledge and ideas to move forward in bringing cost effective hardware solutions. We request the makers’ community to join us in this one day event and help in creating effective innovative solutions that can have a social impact. Goal of the workshop/hackathon The primary goal of the event is to improve our existing machine and make it open source. It needs to become: – Smaller – Cheaper –DIY based kit Second goal should be to improve the data visualization– the current open source version: openenvironment.indiaopendata.com Key Attendees The event will involve people from the maker community of China, India and Germany. Some of the known attendees who will be joining this workshop are David Lee, Eric Pan, Ulrike Reinhard and Mrutyunjay Mishra. Details: •

APPENDIX • About India Open Environment Data Project: The "India Open Environment Data Project" is an open-data project of the India Open Data Association (IODA). It focuses on assessing the important parameters of the environment in the capital of India, Delhi, and showcase the air-quality data of different parts of the city in an open, standardized and visualized format. The key aim of the project is promoter a community driven action through hardware based solution where each user contributes the data on air-quality onto an open-data platform and becomes a part of the community driven action. • People involved In India, from the beginning up till now, people from various professional fields participated in this project to develop an open-source solution to the problem. Given below is the link to the list of individuals in India who are currently involved in this project. The initiative is free for all. Please be a part of this initiative and drive for change. http://knowledge.indiaopendata.com/index.php/Open_Environment_Data_Project •
Our current devices
India Open Data Association (IODA) with the help of some enthusiastic makers has developed an "Environment Monitoring Kit (EMK)" which is a small device that requires being wall-mounted to transmit the environmental data from a particular location. It is based on open-source hardware and possesses the capability of assessing multiple different environmental parameters for air-quality index. IODA has also developed a DIY based environment monitoring device called “AirOwl” in collaboration with Oizom (as one of the makers) which can be used for both indoor and outdoor monitoring of airquality. The device has the capability of assessing dust (PM 2.5 and 10), temperature and humidity.
