Seeed music shield

Introduction Seeed music shield is an iPod/iPhone dock compatible shield, working on Seeeduino v328, Seeeduino Mega and Arduino (Atmega 328 version). It is based on VS1053b, which can play variety of music format stored on MicroSD card.

Features l

iPod/iPhone dock compatible

Standard interface for arduino board

5 control-buttons: Play/Stop, Next, Back, Volume up, and Volume down

Support MP3,WMA,WAV,MIDI,Ogg Vorbis,FLAC(with software plugin )

Headphone / Line Out for playback and line in for recording

Support read and write microSD card of FAT16 and FAT32

Specification Working voltage

18 g

7.5 cm

4.5 cm

NOTE: Atmega 168 cannot drive this music shield. Atmega 328 can play music but cannot record. Only ATmega 1280 has enough Flash for recording. Micro SD card more than 2G is not recommended.

SPI Buses The SPI Bus has been used for both VS1053b’s and Micro SD socket. The SPI bus specifies four logic signals. SCLK — Serial Clock (output from master) MOSI — Master Output, Slave Input (output from master) MISO — Master Input, Slave Output (output from slave) CS— Chip Select, Slave Transmit Enable (active low; output from master) Figure 3 shows that SCLK, MOSI, MISO signals of Micro SD socket and VS1053b are identical and connected with the ISP interface.

Software Installation The seeed music shield is an open source project, and new features can be added by customer. To be a committer, contact [email protected] 1) Download music library and NewSoftSerial library for music shield. 2) Uncompress these two files and Put these libraries in Arduino-0018 program Here is the address of libraries: 3) Download the portpins.h file and replace the default portpins.h file of Arduino-0018 program. The default portpins.h file path is:

4) After all these settings we can run the arduino program and upload the music.pde code to arduino board.

5) Choose the right Arduino board you are using, and download the sketch to it. Arduino Duemilanove or Nano w/ATmega328 is ok for playing all music file the shield supported; Arduino Mega is ok for recording as well as playing. ATmega168 is not supported yet.

6) Plug in the microSD card with music files. Reset the arduino board, when two leds light you can enjoy the music. You can get some playback info by opening a serial terminal running on your PC.

7) After the last music file is played, it will stop and return to the first music file. Repress the paly/stop button will start the music. 8) To enter recording mode, press the play/stop button on power and release it after the green led lights. Repress the play/stop button will end the recording and begin to play music on the Page 6 of 7

microSD card. Note: Remember to input audio signal through the line in interface when recording. 9) When using the music shield with iPod dock, just plug it with Arduino, and the dock will supply 5v to it. You can remotely control the shield with play/stop, back/next, and volume up/down.
