SEARCH SIEBEL ESSENTIALS

Vanilla Script in Siebel CRM The Siebel vanilla repository contains an impressive number of pre-built business services. Most of these business services are of internal or at least undocumented nature. But of course there are some which are widely used and loved within the developer community. Recently, I had a chat with a Siebel developer who was eager to learn how business services are written. I told him he has to use eScript and he could refer to some Siebeldelivered business services for examples.

It's true, some of the more than 1000 pre-built business services are just examples. One of them, called Eliza is a very simplistic one, but it is a good illustration how business services work. I use it a lot to explain Siebel freshers the concept of business services in Siebel CRM and chat bots in general ;-)

Highly Recommended:

eScript code of the Eliza business service in the Siebel repository.

The code of the Siebel-version of Eliza is overwhelmingly simple. The first line collects input from the input property set. The second line processes the input by simply concatenating it within a string. The third line sets the output property. The fourth line finishes code execution. What if you're not a Siebel fresher and bored to death by now? Well, you might want to have a look at the rich collection of other eScript based business service functions in the vanilla repository. Basically, you can inspect the code of any business service with a class name of CSSService or CSSEAIDTEScriptService, the latter group representing the infamous eScript mapping services for the SAP and Oracle (apps) connectors delivered in the days of Siebel 2000 when there was no Data Mapper business service. Of course this is not an invitation to write eScript data maps. However, you might find the one or other hidden gem (and also some erroneous or half-witted code ;-).

Siebel Site Map Notes The Siebel Site Map is obviously one of the most used web pages in a Siebel CRM application.

In the following, you will find some interesting findings about this apparently simple listing of screens and views: 1. It's (just) a web page Yes, the site map is not just a plain HTML page. It has it's own proper web page definition (CC Site Map) in the repository and an associated web template file (CCSiteMap.swt). So if you have nothing else to do you can modify the look and feel of the site map, but of course you do so at your own risk (regarding Open UI around the corner etc.).

CC Site Map w eb page in Siebel Tools and CCSiteMap.sw t in Notepad (click to enlarge)

2. Looking for a nice view? Sometimes, especially for administrators, the site map can be huge and where was this view again? Just press CTRL+F to invoke the browser text search and type the part of the view name you can remember. On some occasions you might have to go through the browser menu to invoke the search, but the text search itself always works. BTW: At Oracle OpenWorld, the Siebel team announced a proper site map search box for Open UI. 3. More columns, please Do you or your end users have one of those wide-screen monitors? If so, there is lots of white space between the (default) three columns of screen links in the site map. If you want to change the number of columns in the site map screen listing, set the SiteMapCols parameter to the desired value. The following screenshot shows the effect of setting the parameter to a value of 6.

Contemplating Siebel Open UI (Updated) One of the most popular posts on this humble blog is the Siebel Open UI Update. Those among my readers who visited Oracle OpenWorld earlier this month could possibly tell the tale (and actually tell) of crowded venues when the Oracle Siebel team demo'ed and discussed the next generation user interface for Siebel. Customer interest in Siebel Open UI is immense and the development team surely feels the pressure coming from customer expectations. In this post, I would like to try and look behind the marketing curtain and describe the

technological and educational implications of Siebel Open UI. All this goodness certainly can't come for free. Or can it? Let's see... 1. Browser Variety With Open UI comes the promise (and it will be held for sure) that we can bathe in Siebel data in the browser of our choice. So we are no longer confined to Microsoft Internet Explorer but we can use Firefox, Chrome, Safari, you name it.

What does this mean for analysts, architects and developers? It means more time and effort for testing. Depending on the number of browsers deployed in your user base, you will have to test new Siebel releases not only in IE but also in other browsers and (mobile) devices/operating system combinations. I call this the renaissance of the /b switch. 2. Open Framework and Responsibility Another area of consideration is the Open UI framework itself. While the HI ActiveX framework which accompanied us through the last 12 years of our Siebel life could be described as "black box" at best, Open UI leverages common JavaScript (jQuery that is mostly) and HTML techniques which are fully accessible to developers of all couleurs.

With this open architecture comes a great deal of responsibility and a high need for discipline. Just because you can use jQuery to do all sorts of nifty stuff, this doesn't mean you should abandon all your good manners that you learned (probably the hard way) in the pre-Open UI days. Field validation, for example, should still be implemented at the Business Component level rather than the UI level simply because of the centralized aspect and the fact that EAI interfaces share the same experience as end users do. 3. Developer Skills

With the new jQuery based framework, there will be an initial skill gap for most Siebel developers. So project managers should be prepared to approve some extra training and literature for their Siebel development team in that area.

Then I ask you to contemplate the (admittedly high) possibility that this will not work in Open UI, so you will have to re-implement a considerable amount of code when Open UI comes on your monitor. 5. User Experience (UX) and Training Siebel Open UI is very similar to any existing Siebel UI as far as the concept of list, form and explorer applets are concerned. On the other hand, some areas such as the product configurator have been totally redesigned.

As a foresighted member of the Siebel project team, you should plan for a considerable amount of time (and money) to be spent on end user training. And of course you should still be aware that the user experience is not just within fancy transparent popups but in the process itself and how well it is implemented in the application.

Siebel CRM Batch Workflows

Every time, I demonstrate or implement a batch workflow in Siebel CRM, I think to myself: "Hey, life can be that easy!".

Let me explain why: Let's consider a (truly realistic) requirement to frequently do a "mass update" on records in Siebel CRM. If your answer is "update siebel.s_contact set..." then please go away and stay away ;-)

Role Based Access Control in Oracle Fusion Applications (H.U.G) Over the years, I created many a H.U.G. (Hopefully Useful Graphic). Today, it's my turn to explain how role based access control is implemented within Oracle Fusion Applications. Here is the H.U.G. Please refer to the text below the diagram for an explanation. You can read more about Oracle Fusion Applications security concepts here.

Fusion Applications use - like basically all other siblings in the enterprise application family - a role based approach to control access to data and functionality. The major part is played by the so called Enterprise Roles which come in three flavors: Abstract Role: Defines the generic job, for example Employee. Job Role: Defines the job title, for example Accounts Payable Manager. Data Role: Defines the access right to specific data sets, for example Accounts Payable Manager US. As we can see from the above diagram, a user is associated with abstract roles and data roles directly. A data role has associated job roles which are therefore indirectly assigned to the user.

Abstract roles and job roles must have at least one duty role associated. Duty roles can best be described as a group of tasks to be done within an enterprise, for example View Payslip or Process payable invoices.

So far, we have described an abstract security model. In Fusion Applications, security is implemented using Oracle Identity Management (OIM) and Authorization Policy Manager (APM) (as you can see here).

CRM Product Marketing Blog

OIM provides access to the directory service which stores the user accounts and associates the user accounts with roles (note that in OIM, we just talk about roles, which can be any of the three enterprise roles explained above).

SiebelMantra

APM is responsible for mapping application roles (the generic term used for duty roles) and their mapping to policies and enterprise roles (viewed in APM as external roles).

The Siebel Scholar

There are various types of policies. A good example is a data security policy which defines access to data.

siebelbank

Summary

SiebelSadmin

Oracle Fusion Applications come with a flexible role based security concept which allows fine grained control over data and function security for each user.

Testing Inbound Siebel Web Services with JDeveloper

It's actually quite funny: Show JDeveloper to a Siebel developer and she/he will never complain again about Siebel Tools ;-)

ORCLville

Of course, it is a bit unfair to compare a full grown Java IDE to a proprietary development tool (let's see if this triggers some comments ;-)

But let's face it: JDeveloper (along with the Application Development Framework - ADF) is Oracle's IDE of choice for all new applications (like Fusion Applications). So the sooner

you get your hands on it, the better. Recently, I was (again) experimenting with ADF and wanted to build a quick demo application which used Siebel inbound web services. Typically, the first thing you do with a WSDL file is that you give it a test drive to see if the file and the web service endpoint are fully operational. There are quite a lot of articles and demos how to test a Siebel web service with the free soapUI tool and of course it comes very handy. In the following, I would like to point out how to use Oracle JDeveloper to open and test a WSDL file. This of course would apply to ANY web service but we are in da Siebel house here ;-) 1. Prepare the Siebel environment and download the WSDL file First, we need access to a Siebel server environment or set up our developer web client to serve inbound web service calls. For a quick demo, I always love to do the latter, so I issued the following command line on my laptop:

To put it straight: Many years will pass before we will witness another masterpiece like this. This book is epic and a total MUST for anyone who works with OBIEE 11g. So what more can I say? Let's have a quick tour around the book. If you're expecting getting spoon-fed with droplets of wisdom, forget about it. Did I mention, the tome is more than 1000 pages heavy? But somehow Mark managed to

compress - yes, compress - the obscene amount of information and functionality in and around OBIEE 11g into not more than 12 chapters. That alone is an accomplishment in itself. Chapters 1 and 2 give a architectural background and installation guide. Mark of course doesn't miss any details. Chapter 3, Modeling Repositories is probably the pivotal chapter of the book. If you have only time to read one chapter, then read this one. I was especially intrigued by the detailed information Mark shares with us on advanced modeling techniques.

Oracle OpenWorld 2012 - The Story so far Oracle OpenWorld 2012 ► ► September (12) ► ► August (11) ► ► July (6) ► ► June (10) ► ► May (14) ► ► April (9)

After a chapter on multi-dimensional sources such as Oracle Essbase, Mark shifts gears and goes into BI Server Configuration. Chapters 6 and 7 deal with the front end matter and again, Mark stands up to his reputation with stunning insight on everything you can do with analyses, dashboards, KPIs, agents and the action framework.

► ► March (9) ► ► February (8) ► ► January (7) ► ► 2011 (114) ► ► 2010 (143)

Chapter 8 talks about OBIEE security and it's good to see that Mark goes the extra mile to explain in depth how to set up row based security and MS Active Directory integration (apart from all other goodness of course).

► ► 2009 (138)

In chapter 9, it's BI Publisher time. Chapter 10 gives us all the information we ever need on Systems Management.

With chapter 11, Mark introduces the several ways of managing multi-developer projects and if you think that there is just MUDE, you'll be surprised. Finally, there is a chapter on Exalytics with a nice overview and insight on the 'machine'. Summary As I said above, this book is a total MUST for anyone who wants to master OBIEE 11g. have a nice day @lex

Heads in the Cloud If you followed yesterday's keynote and general session on Oracle OpenWorld in person or via live stream, you know by now that after many announcements, the Oracle Cloud has been opened to the greater public making this a day to remember. Sure enough, the "Exa"-boxes in Oracle's data center got their share of requests last night. Also from my computer as I scooped up the information on the pages in order to present you in this post the main features. The following menu appears when you click on Offerings:

► ► 2008 (58)

Posts All Comments

Let's inspect each one of them quickly. I will include the links to the features page for each offering, so if you're eager to learn more (or purchase) you can go from here. Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) Here we find the Fusion Applications offerings, namely Financials Procurement Project Portfolio Management Supply Chain Management

At the time of writing this article, the Try It button opens a popup with a phone number. Planning and Budgeting This is the umbrella for Oracle's Enterprise Performance Management (EPM) product line in the Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) world. EPM will be made available later this year and integrate with ERP cloud and on premise applications. Human Capital Management (HCM) Another Fusion offering, namely Fusion HCM is available on the Oracle Cloud starting at $9.50 per employee and month. Talent Management The Taleo product is also available on the Oracle Cloud and it even includes an online learning module. Sales and Marketing Also known as Fusion CRM, Oracle offers this service similar to ERP and HCM on a monthly subscription basis. Customer Service and Support Here we find the RightNow product line which enables cloud customers to implement contact center services using chat and classic call center channels.

Social Network Integrated with Fusion CRM, it enables companies a secure way of engaging their employees and customers. Social Marketing Honestly, I am guessing a bit, but this Oracle Cloud offering obviously stems from the recent acquisitions like Vitrue in the social web apps domain. Social Engagement and Monitoring The same applies as above. Data and Insight This offering is offered to selected customers in preview mode and enables data enrichment for CRM and other applications using D&B (Dun & Bradstreet) customer information. Database It wouldn't be Oracle if their cloud wouldn't include DaaS (Database as a Service ;-). After registering, you get your own database along with all the 11g goodies such as APEX etc. Java Develop applications using the IDE of your choice and deploy them directly to a WebLogic server on an "Exa"-box? Yes you can! Developer Don't feel offended when someone mentions git? Maven is not a rare bird to you and Hudson not just a river? Then this is the place for you. Storage Finally, Oracle is a cloud storage provider (or soon will be). Messaging No, it's not like icq or other services. When we say "messages" we mean integration messages, nicely stored and forwarded using (JMS) queues to integrate all your on premise and cloud systems. Summary So this is it, the Oracle Cloud. As you can read for yourself in the FAQs, not all of this is currently available and therefore there might be a lot of changes as Oracle goes from here. Personally I am quite excited about this new range of possibilities and bow to the people at Oracle who make this all happen. have a nice day @lex

Oracle OpenWorld 2012 - The Story so far Even if I can't attend Oracle OpenWorld in person, I don't feel that I have to miss much (apart from the social aspect) because of the real-time availability of news on the internet. So I have been surfing and searching a bit and came up with these interesting bits from this year's Oracle infotainment-fest: Roadmaps are looking good according to Tony Berk on the Oracle Customer Experience Blog.
