BRIDGE TIPS from MARJORIE MICHELIN GRAND LIFE MASTER
Simple Spiral Spiral is a bridge convention that is used when you and partner have an auction that starts with 1 of a minor – 1 of a Major -‐ 2 of the Major. It has many variations and names. As in most situations, it is important that you and your partner agree to play it the same way! Many partnerships have a steadfast rule that when you raise partner’s major suit after you open a minor, you promise 4. We would all like to have 4 but sometimes we have a hand that does not have a suitable rebid other than a raise of the major. Reasons for your decision to raise on 3 card support: 1. 2 of the major would rate to be a better part score 2. I don’t have a better alternative 3. Encouragement in the Major may be the fast track to a possible game. Example, you hold: ♠ K64 ♥ 32 ♦ Q65 ♣ AKJ32
You open 1♣ and partner bids 1♠. You have good playing strength for spades and a hole in hearts for bidding 1NT. You raise to 2♠. You have a good side suit, you have a ruffing value and partner can judge if you have a double fit, a bid of 2♣ does not seem forward going.
Spiral is an ASKING BID. Responder asks Opener if they have 3 or 4 card support, minimum or maximum in order to place the contract in the right strain. Partner may bid 3NT, sign-‐off in 3 of the major, bid 4 of the major or More! You can no longer play 2NT as natural. After the auction: 1m -‐1M -‐2M (1♣ -‐1♥ -‐2♥) 2NT* becomes an asking bid. The responses are artificial as follows: • With 3 card support and a minimum hand bid 3♣* • With 3 card support and a maximum hand bid 3♦* • With 4 card support and a minimum hand bid 3♥* • With 4 card support and a maximum hand bid 3♠*
