Six Mile Connected by CARTA 3 new bus routes stop in Six Mile Six Mile is one of the best places to live in the East Cooper Area if you want to avoid the cast and hassle of automobile travel since it is served by three CARTA Routes.

#40 Trans Mount Pleasant

The #40 is East Cooper’s primary Bus line. It runs from the Mary Street Transit Center downtown all the way out to Wando High School. It has stops outbound to Wando on Highway 17 in front of Goodwill near Six Mile road and Inbound across the highway, going into Charleston. If you don’t want to cross Highway 17 , you can take the #401 with runs along Six Mile Road and the Sweetgrass Parkway and transfer at Town Center where the inbound stop to Charleston is right across the Street from Carvel Ice Cream. To do this you’ll need to walk about 300 feet North into Town Centre from Hungryneck. You can also dismount the #401 a the stop next to BILO with the wooden bench and just wait for the Inbound #40 there. The stop by BI-LO is the only stop shared by all three regular bus lines. The #40 stops at Six Mile road about 15 minutes after the hour headed out towards Wando. It stops at Long Point headed towards Charleston at about 56 minutes after the hour and in Town Center about on the hour. The #40 has stops at the new Mount Pleasant Hospital near Wando HS, Town Center, Bowman Road, Houston Northcutt (Mount Pleasant Town Hall), and Patriot’s Point. Once you are downtown, you can head to North Charleston, James Island or West Ashley from the Mary Street transit center. If you travel to downtown Charleston, you won’t need your car because the DASH bus system there is now free.

#401 East Cooper Connector

The Connector enters Six Mile by turning off of 17 on to Six Mile road after running through Snowden and along Long Point at about 40 minutes after the hour. It passes Goodwill and Ecco, where there is a stop and then turns on to Sweetgrass Parkway where there is stop behind the new Harris Teeter. We’re working to improve both of these stops. After visiting Six Mile, it makes a stop at the County Services Center, Highway Dpt. And Magistrates Court on the IOP Connector and then heads down Hungryneck behind Town Centre. It travels through Four Mile and behind Wando Crossing Shopping Center (where there is a Walmart and Office Depot). It travels on to Bowman Road, Church Dawley, Myrick, Old Whitesides School, Sea Island Shopping Center, Coleman Blvd., Patriot’s Point and Waterfront Park. On the outbound side of it’s trip, it has stops along Houston Northcutt (across from Whole Foods and Mt. Pleasant Town Hall) Coleman, Ben Sawyer, Rifle Range, Myrick, Chuck Dawley, Bowman, Kmart, The Senior Citizens Center, East Cooper Medical Complex, and the Old Wando Campus (where Laing is now). It completes it’s loop with stops along Whipple, at Belle Hall, Egypt Road, in Snowden and at Boone Hall/ Charles Pinckney Historic site.

#402 Island Flex (Bus to the Beach)

Six Mile Residents can get front door pickup in their commu-

nity anywhere on the West Side of Six Mile road by making a reservation for travel to anywhere in the #402 Flex Bus service area which includes all of Sullivan’s Island, most of the Isle of Palms outside Wild Dunes and the area between Four Mile Road, Six Mile Road and Highway 17. The reservation line tends to be tied up, so getting a reservation takes patience. You can also travel to Town Center and get on one of the #402s scheduled runs every two hours to the Front Beach Isle of Palms. The #402 pickup stop is in front of Verizon, near Carvel Ice Cream.. We working to arrange reduced fares for the basic trip from Town Centre to IOP in the near future.

Express Bus

The Express Bus doesn’t stop at Six Mile, however you can take the #401 Connector from here to Kmart and board the Express Bus to downtown or Citadel Mall there. The connector stops at the Entrance to Kmart on Bowman and you’ll need to walk back to the stop on the far side of the Parking lot, near highway 17. You can also drive your car to, park and ride at Super Wal-Mart at Oakland or Kmart.

Cost

The basic fare for the #40 Trans Mount Pleasant or #401 E. Cooper Connector is $1.75. Children under six are free with an adult. Senior Citizens pay a discounted fare of Eighty-five cents at certain times. Disabled people pay 50 cents. The premium Flex service on the #402 is #3. Transfers for continued travel onward and from most other CARTA buses, are 30 cents. The cheapest way to use CARTA is to buy prepaid passes at the Sea Island Piggly Wiggly or Visitors Center at Mount Pleasant Waterfront Memorial Park, which can save over half the cost of paying regular fare.

Ways to use CARTA from Six Mile

CARTA provides a good way to get to work along Coleman Blvd. Many Six Mile residents already ride the Connector to work in Mount Pleasant or take the #40 to Charleston or the #402 out to the Beach to work. If you take the bus to work, you and your employer can realize special tax benefits under a new Federal Government program where the cost of your bus travel can be tax free to both of you. It’s easy for Senior Citizens in Six Mile to travel to the Senior Citizens Center, named after Snowden Resident, friend of the Six Mile community, CARTA Board Member and Mount Pleasant Town Council Member, Thomasena Stokes Marshall. Students can return home to Six Mile from Wando High School in the afternoon following extracurricular activities, sports and tutoring can use the #40. Laing students can get home after school using the #401 East Cooper Connector. Medical Offices and hospitals easy to reach from Six Mile include those around East Cooper Hospital and those along Wingo Way on the #401. The new Mount Pleasant Hospital can be reached on the #40. The bus is also a great way for people to visit Six Mile without you needing to drive out to pick them up.
