From the Desk of Brent Forsee, AHS Principal Hello Mariners, Spartans and Highlanders, April 14th is a very important day for middle school students in Arcadia. From 4:30-7:30 PM Arcadia High School will be hosting our annual “Spring Preview and Orientation.” We will have clubs and team information booths on the rally court while performing arts groups strut their stuff for you and your parents. Our parent booster groups will also be available during our Spring Preview and Orientation! Campus tours will begin at approximately 4:30 PM and are designed to orient you to our beautiful campus and give you a taste of what our classroom instruction looks like with in-room demonstrations by our Arcadia High teachers. Three of our competitive academic teams advanced to the California State Tournament and two of those teams, Constitution Team and History Bowl, advanced to the National finals in Washington D.C. These opportunities once again highlight the inclusiveness and breadth of programs at Arcadia High. We strive to provide unparalleled experiences for kids in the 4 A’s: Academics, Athletics, Activities and the Arts. No high school in Southern California can compete with the number and strength of programs available for students. This is yet another reason Arcadia High remains a premier destination for students on the state and national level. Dr. Brent Forsee Principal Arcadia High School, named a Gold Medal High School three times by U.S. News and World Report, is rated by Newsweek as one of the elite public high schools in the country!

Spring Preview Day is almost here! I hope that all prospective freshmen and other middle school students have the event on their calendars. Spring Preview Day highlights the diversity of activities offered at Arcadia High School. We will have music, drama and dance performances which showcase our performing arts department. The Athletic Boosters will have several coaches at their booth to answer questions as well as information about highly anticipated summer camps. Other student groups and clubs will also be on hand to answer questions. Tours will be ongoing and you’ll see the newly finished cafeteria and library. Last but certainly not least, presentations will be made by academic department chairs and administrative staff. Food trucks will be on campus so entire families are encouraged to come and enjoy performances by student groups. I will be at the PTSA booth and look forward to meeting you. PTSA is an integral part of Arcadia High School. The school relies upon PTSA for parent input and support. Although there are other booster clubs on campus, PTSA is the primary parent organization that helps to disseminate general information about academics and campus events. Our meetings feature reports from student ASB officers, teachers, counselors and administrators. PTSA holds monthly meetings (which in 2016-2017 will be held on the first Thursday of the month at 9:00 AM) where important information is distributed first, even before the listserv! Our next meeting is May 5 at 6:00pm in the Apache Pit (cafeteria). We will have a regular meeting and conclude with our annual honorary service award program. The last meeting of the year will be held on Thursday, June 2 at 9:00 AM in the Apache Pit. It will be a great opportunity for you to meet the incoming President and Executive Board as we install the new officers. Come to Spring Preview Day to see for yourself what Arcadia High School can offer your student and to the PTSA meeting to see how you can be a part of it! Band & Color Guard New Parent Meeting

Held Thursday night, June 23rd during New Marchers Camp - you'll get to meet parents who are already involved and be able to answer questions in a more intimate setting. This will be held in the band room at 8 p.m.

Percussion Parents Arcadia High School has three percussion lines: A Line, Open Line and World Line. Your student will be auditioning in May. Please ask your 8th grader to contact their middle school band director, or email Mr. Sherrill ([email protected]) for audition workshop dates. Most freshmen are on the A or Open Line Percussion ensembles. A and Open have their own schedules and season of competition (spring) so they are not involved in the Marching Band. Only World Line percussionists participate in Marching Band including the Field Show. A and Open line is a nice way to transition into the percussion program at the high school.

Color Guard & Percussion Students & Parents You are invited to the 2016 Spring Show! If you'd like to see what your percussion student will be doing in less than a year please attend the Percussion & Color Guard Spring Show in the North Gym on Saturday, May 7th starting at 5 p.m. Tickets will be available at the door for $8.

Apache Days Volunteers Needed Apache Days registration will take place August 5, 8 & 9 and requires the help of many parent volunteers to run smoothly. “Fast Passes” with front of the line privileges will be issued to students whose parents volunteer. It is a lot of fun, a great opportunity to meet other parents, and an important way to help the school! Freshmen Apache Day will be the morning of Tuesday Aug. 9 (those students participating in Music Camp will register on the morning of Friday August 5th). Volunteers can sign up to help on any of the registration days during morning or afternoon time frames. New this year, we will be using “Sign-up Genius” for our Apache Day Volunteers. Our teams routinely qualify for CIFSouthern Section playoffs and win league championships. This past Fall, the Girls Tennis team won a CIF title, the Girls Cross-Country team finished 3rd in the California State Championships and Phillip Rocha repeated as the California State Champion in Boys Cross-Country. The Apaches participate in a variety of sports spread across three separate seasons. During the fall, the Apaches compete in Boys and Girls Cross-Country, Football, Girls Golf, Girls Tennis, Girls Volleyball, and Boys Water Polo. Apache Winter sports include Boys and Girls Basketball, Boys and Girls Soccer, and Girls Water Polo. The Spring season brings Co-Ed Badminton, Baseball, Boys Golf, Softball, Boys and Girls Swimming, Boys Tennis, Boys and Girls Track and Field, and Boys Volleyball. For all of the sports listed above, AHS fields both Varsity and Junior Varsity teams. Frosh/Soph teams are also fielded in Football, Boys and Girls Volleyball, Boys and Girls Basketball, Boys and Girls Soccer, Baseball and Softball. All told, more than 1,000 Arcadia High School students participate in Apache athletics each year. Information regarding tryouts for all sports, and general information about Arcadia High School athletics, can be found at www.ApacheBoosters.com. For incoming freshman in the fall of 2016, it is important to note that tryouts for the Fall Sports generally take place in August before the start of school, so if you are interested in these sports please make sure to visit the website regularly during the summer. Arcadia Apache Athletics are supported by the Arcadia High School Athletic Booster Club, non-profit 501(c)(3) charitable organization whose sole purpose is to raise funds for the athletics program. All parents of AHS student-athletes are encouraged to join the Booster Club. Among its fundraising activities, the Booster Club offers Summer Sports Camps in a variety of different sports. Information about the 2016 Summer Sports Camp program will be distributed in the near future via AUSD’s PeachJar information distribution system. Please be on the lookout for this important information. And, GO APACHES! Mike Stiles AHS Athletic Booster Club President

What You Need To Know About AHS By: Link Crew Freshmen Orientation Freshmen Orientation will be your first experience with all the other freshmen at the High School, where freshmen and the leadership organizations Link Crew, Senior Men and Women, and ASB, come together. At orientation you will do bonding activities, meet your Link Crew leader and group, and explore the AHS campus. Orientation allows freshmen to feel more relaxed and welcome in a new environment; attending this event allows you to make new friends, especially with your Link leader!

Your First Day of High School Almost everyone gets lost on their first day of high school, or even walks into the wrong classroom, so don’t be embarrassed if it happens to you! But you can always ask your Link Crew leader to show you to all of your classes, or to get to school early the first day and look through your schedule and find all your classes. Its also normal to be very scared and nervous on your first day! But soon after, you will be as comfortable at school as you are at home.

Your First Semester of High School First of all, your Link Crew leader is your biggest asset, and you should try to attend as many lunch meetings as you can.. Don’t be late to classes because you might get caught up in a tardy sweep, but also because being tardy is a bad thing in general. A very important thing to do is to always have your ID card on you! You need one to do many important things around campus. Lastly, stay on task! Slacking off your first semester only sets you up for laziness the rest of the year. Good luck!

Link Crew Group From Freshmen Orientation on through the rest of the year, you will have a Link Crew leader who chose you personally, and will always be there to guide you. However, since there are only around 60 Link Crew leaders, you will be in a Link Crew group of around 13 to 16 other freshmen. Throughout the year you will have lunch meetings where you eat lunch with your group and do different bonding games, and check in with how you’re doing with your leader. Link Crew Events Link Crew offers a series of fun events throughout the year that help you transition into AHS. One of the first events of the year is a tailgate party to boost school spirit before your first homecoming game! Also make sure to check out Freshmen Movie Night where freshmen come to school and watch a movie on the field together! As the year goes on, we also host the famous Pi Day, where students can throw pies at their teachers! High School may be stressful, but that doesn’t mean that there’s never any fun!

What AHS Has to Offer Arcadia High has different varieties of clubs, activities, and classes to offer. It is important to join clubs, activities, and athletics in order to make new friends. There are academic teams, such as Academic Decathlon, Science Olympiad, Physics team, and many more! We also have very advanced technology. For example there is a 3D printer available in the library for any who have an interest in computer science. Some electives available are Theatre, photography, music, as well as an elective for everyone no matter what you’re interested in! Peer tutoring is an invaluable resource available after school.

Personal Freshman Experience of a Link Crew Leader Entering high school, I felt terrified of all the new faces. Every classroom I entered, I recognized nobody. As freshman year went on, I started to get comfortable with AHS and began to love every part of it. Soon, I checked out a variety of clubs, but ended up loving Key Club. During lunchtime, all the freshmen were gathered up within their old friends from middle school and never tried to meet new people from other schools. As I made new friends, I had to accept that some of my old friends would be lost, but these new friends helped me become a better person. High school has transitioned me into a new stage in my life which has brought me many new and enjoyable experiences. Page 11

AVID Update The AVID recruitment has been underway since February and we have had a growing number of students applying. Arcadia HS AVID had an informational parent meeting on February 25th, which was open to any incoming 9th grade students interested in being in AVID at AHS. We had a great turnout, and applications were due by March 4th. If your student applied to be in AVID they will be notified of their acceptance soon. If they have any questions, they can contact Ms. Polidano at [email protected] or Ms. Franz at [email protected]. Be sure to see the AVID presentation at Spring Preview! Jessica Polidano AVID/Transition Counselor

YOU’RE INVITED! The Arcadia High School Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) Booster Club, cordially invites you to join us. We are a group of parent/guardians with children in the AVID program at AHS. Our primary goal is to support the success of our AVID students, parents, teachers and the overall AVID program. This is a valuable but free membership. All are welcome! Teen students are in great need of parental involvement in their education experience. AHS is a very large school, with wonderful opportunities, a multitude of clubs/organizations and numerous daily activities to offer. As such, there is a great deal of important information that will be critical to the students and parents. In addition, AVID will feature exclusive curriculum, programs and activities. Students may not be able to keep up with the large volume of information or remember to share it all at home, while keeping up with their academics. Thus, it is essential that parents participate in the education of high school students and establish a direct connection to AHS and AVID. AVID Boosters is a valuable support group that will not only keep you updated on AVID and AHS activities and essential deadlines, but we will also present you with helpful tools to assist your children through the transition into AHS. Through guest speakers, we will also present you with guidelines to help you prepare your children for their future college and professional careers.

BE A LEADER! You also have the opportunity to join our AVID Boosters Leadership Committee. This group of volunteer parents sets the goals and plans the future activities of our Club. We encourage you to join this committee, there is no prior experience necessary. Previous officers will help you to learn as you contribute. Even if you Continued on page 12 Page 12

only have 1 hour a month to donate, we will welcome it. If you model leadership behavior for your children, it’s likely that they too will become leaders. It’s important that we have parents representing 9th grade students and their needs as part of our leaders. With your involvement, we can thrive and help our support group grow each year to meet the growing AVID program. Together we can bring our AVID students beneficial and entertaining activities while having some fun ourselves. We welcome and look forward to your valuable participation!

ASB in High School As the final months of my high school experience closes in, I look at how incredibly blessed I am to attend such a high-achieving school that provides endless opportunities for its students to discover themselves. Luckily, I was able to find my niche in ASB—the Associated Student Body. My first encounter with ASB freshman year was unsuccessful, but it gave me time to reorganize my priorities and inspire me to continue outreach. From there, I have been serving on ASB for three years as the Sophomore Class Senator, Junior Class Senator, and now as the ASB President. In my first year of ASB as Sophomore Class Senator, I was faced with the huge duty of chairing Prom Committee 2014 and planning Prom 2014. Quite frankly, all I remember from Sophomore year was planning Prom because I began the process as early as October 2014 when the dance was in May 2015. From this event, I learned the significance of detailed planning and proper execution because had I not created a calendar laying out all my deadlines, the attendance would not have been as good as it was that year. My Junior year as Junior Class Senator taught me the importance of time management because it was the first year I took five core classes, APs, and the SAT/ACT, all while balancing my responsibility to serve the school as their elected leader. That year, I along with my partner were assigned the chairs of our Spring Fling dance and Super Week spirit week; this was all in the midst of first semester finals, elections, and preparation for AP tests. Though it was difficult adjusting my work load and still prioritizing ASB, it taught me better time management. Lastly, as the ASB President, I have withstood the test of patience and recognized just how vital it is to earn the respect of my council members and peers in order to effectively lead my council. Using the skills I have gained my Sophomore and Junior year helped immensely because I also balance working part-time after school, school work, and ASB. Organizational and leadership skills aside, I became more outgoing and outspoken. I became a better listener and problem solver in both ASB and my friendships. All in all, each year delivered new responsibilities and lessons that helped and prepared me for life beyond high school.
