The 2011 SOCDA Conference will include presentations of effective trial preparation strategies and trial practices. Attorneys new to SVP practice, and experienced SVP attorneys, will get the most up-to-date information on trial strategies, and research on risk assessment and diagnostic issues. In addition, a panel of experts will answer your questions about the state of SVP science. The conference will conclude with an open forum to discuss issues with fellow SVP attorneys, and winning strategies.

Presenters: Attorney John Fennel became a public defender in 2006. Since 2007 he has worked for the Alternative Commitment Unit in Massachusetts representing only men accused of being SDP. He won his first 7 SDP jury trials and has since been struggling to stay over 50%. Attorney Robert LeBell, Milwaukee, Wisconsin, is a private practitioner who has engaged in SVP litigation since 1996. He has successfully represented many respondents through all phases of commitment actions. He is a frequent lecturer for various criminal defense organizations on both sexual assault and civil commitment defenses. Attorney Ian Gold, works as Assistant Federal Public Defender in the Boston area, and was a former staff attorney at the Committee for Public Counsel Services. Thomas K. Zander, Psy.D., J.D., is a clinical and forensic psychologist licensed and based in Florida and Wisconsin. He has a small, pro bono practice that includes SVP commitment evaluations in those states. He also teaches mental disability law at Marquette University Law School, Milwaukee, WI. Brian R. Abbott, Ph.D. is a licensed clinical psychologist in private practice in San Jose, CA. He has specialized in the areas of
SVP evaluations, consulting, and training for the past eight years across the United States, and has published peer reviewed articles and other papers related to risk assessment in SVP cases. Richard Wollert, Ph.D., received his Ph.D. in clinical psychology from Indiana University in 1978. Tenured as a full professor of psychology in 1983, he has evaluated 1,000 sex offenders, treated 3,000, and been involved in over 150 SVP proceedings. He has also authored many articles, papers, and trainings on psychodiagnosis and risk assessment in SVP cases in the last ten years. Terence Campbell, Ph.D., is author, or coauthor, of six books and 40 peer-reviewed articles. The second edition of Assessing Sex Offenders: Problems and Pitfalls was published in 2007. Dr. Campbell is board certified in forensic psychology by the American Board of Professional Psychology (ABFP). He has testified in SVP matters in California, Florida, Illinois, Iowa, Missouri, New Hampshire, Washington, and Wisconsin. James Peterson, Ph.D., is a privatepractice forensic psychologist. He taught graduate psychology and social-science research courses at UW-Milwaukee, UWSuperior and the University of Minnesota-
Duluth. He was the Chief Regional Psychologist for the Division of Community Corrections in a 16-county region of northwest Wisconsin from 1993-2006. Also featuring expert panelists: Jeffrey Singer, Ph.D., Joseph Plaud, Ph.D., and Luis Rosell, Ph.D., along with Drs. Richard Wollert, Brian Abbott, Terence Campbell, Thomas Zander, and James Peterson. Conference Organizers: Courtney Endres, Psy.D., is in private practice in Wisconsin, and has experience treating adult and juvenile sex offenders. She completed her dissertation in 2010 on females considered under SVP laws. She has trained in the evaluation and treatment of sex offenders for the past decade. Diane Lytton, Ph.D., has done SVP evaluations and related consultations for 16 years primarily in Wisconsin, and also Washington, Illinois, Iowa and Massachusetts. She has extensive training in the evaluation of sex offenders, and is in private practice as a forensic psychologist in Appleton, WI.
