DIARY NOTICE: Press Conference and photo opportunity:
GROWING SCANDAL OVER OLYMPIC STADIUM SPONSOR with cross-‐party MPs, Bhopal disaster survivor, well-‐known individuals TBA. Venue: Olympic Stadium in Stratford
Embargoed until 9am Tuesday 15th November When: Tuesday 15th November at 1pm. What: press conference to launch a campaign, with cross-‐party support from MPs, NGOs and campaigners, demanding that LOCOG (London Organising Committee of the Olympic Games) reverse their decision to award Dow Chemical exclusive marketing rights to the London Olympic Stadium.
Dow Chemical have recently been found guilty of SERIOUS MALPRACTICE and have outstanding liabilities pertaining to the Bhopal disaster. They cannot be considered an appropriate sponsor of the London Olympics Stadium. The campaign urges LOCOG and the Mayor of London (who ducked an official question at the London Assembly) to acknowledge the recent case that saw a wholly owned Dow subsidiary fined by the New York Securities and Exchange Commission and, in September this year, blacklisted by the Indian Agriculture Ministry for bribing officials in order to sell banned pesticides in India. The campaign also urges Dow Chemical to recognise its ongoing responsibility to the victims of the Bhopal disaster and to acknowledge the continuing contamination, in Bhopal, and the ongoing legal proceedings. The event will also be the launch of a letter to LOCOG signed by a broad coalition of MPs, Indian Olympian athletes, campaigners, Bhopal survivors organisations and celebrities.
Who: Amnesty International, Bhopal Medical Appeal, Cross-‐party MPs and MPs representing the Olympic Boroughs. Well-‐known individuals TBA. Plus the great-‐great-‐granddaughter of the last ‘Begum of Bhopal’ (the Bhopal Royal Family) and herself a survivor of the Bhopal disaster.
Where: Olympic Site View Tube, Olympic Park, Stratford. Nearest station is Pudding Mill Lane DLR. Click here for a map.

NOTES TO EDITORS: The Corrupt Practices of Dow: Dow Agro Sciences (a wholly owned Dow subsidiary) were blacklisted, as recently as September 2011, by the Indian Agriculture Minstry after being caught bribing Indian officials in order to sell pesticides in India-‐ including the notorious ‘Dursban’-‐ that have been banned for many years in the USA. Dow were fined by the New York Securities and Exchange Commission, in 2007, for similar corrupt practices (see links below). Hindustan Times-‐ Centre bans Dow subsidiary over bribery: https://docs.google.com/document/d/11lZWsZqvLYQTbB9ZSMSafX9tbUkSCjwksgi5m9 9GdsY/edit New York Securities and Exchange Commission order instituting cease and desist proceedings against Dow: www.sec.gov/litigation/admin/2007/34-55281.pdf Dursban: http://www.getipm.com/articles/dursban-school.htm The Legacy of Bhopal: Dow’s PR offensive claims that the Bhopal disaster was fully settled by Union Carbide back in 1989. But, it is simply not true to say that the matter is closed and Dow themselves are involved in a number of ongoing cases regarding the Bhopal Disaster. Dow are named respondents on a ‘curative petition’ in the Indian Supreme Court that aims to address some of the inadequacies of the 1989 settlement. Dow are also named respondents in a public interest case in the Madhya Pradesh High court. The Bhopal CRIMINAL case: Dow subsidiary, The Union Carbide Corporation and ex CEO Warren Anderson, are fugitives from justice in India. They are wanted on CRIMINAL charges of ‘culpable homicide not amounting to murder’ and Dow, as owner's of Union Carbide, are harbouring a fugitive from justice. Although Dow has total control of UCC it hasn't produced UCC in court and has used Union Carbide India Limited, its Indian subsidiary, and the corporate veil to obstruct a judicial summons addressed to Dow in Michigan asking why Union Carbide has not been presented to the court. Litigation in the US: Union Carbide, Dow’s wholly owned subsidiary, is subject to a civil action in the New York Southern District Court. This action pertains to the ongoing contamination in Bhopal caused by the indiscriminate dumping of toxic waste by the Union Carbide factory. The US courts accept that this is a separate matter, from the 1984 gas disaster, and as such has never received any settlement. Dow are implicated by virtue of Union Carbide being their wholly owned subsidiary and by them having acquired all of Union Carbide's assets and liabilities in the 1991 takeover.
