Making the four patch blocks Step 1: Using a ¼” seam, sew a background strip to a coloured strip along the long edge (Diagram 2). Set the seam and press to the darker fabric. Repeat until you have 15 joined strips.

Step 2: Cross-cut these units into (254) 2½” two patch units. Put 62 of these aside for border 2, the rest will be used to make four-patch blocks.

Step 3: Join these two-patch units together as illustrated in diagram 4 to make 96 four patch units.

Optional: Collapsing the seams Collapsing the centre seam is a neat little trick to reduce bulk in the centre of you block. It’s not essential but if you would like to - here’s how you do it. Step 1: Unpick the couple of stitches that are above the seam line. Unpick these stitches

Step 2: Fan the centre of the seam out so that it looks like a little four-patch and press

Making the half square triangles (HSTs) Step 1: Place a 4⅞” background square right sides together with a 4⅞” coloured square and sew a ¼” seam on either side of the diagonal line you drew in earlier.

Diag. 7

Step 2: Use a rotary cutter to cut along the diagonal line to yield two triangles.

Diag. 8

Step 3: Set the seam, then open the triangles out and press to the darker fabric. Trim the little tails.

Make 48 Jacob’s Ladder Blocks. Border 1 Step 1: Join 3, 2½” strips together at the ends. Fold in half lengthways and cut two equal lengths. These are for the top and bottom borders. Step 2: Join 2, 2½” strips together at the ends. Repeat with the remaining two strips. These are for the side borders. Step 3: Once the main body of the quilt has been pieced, lay it flat and measure the width of the quilt across the centre. Cut two strips this length from the strips you pieced in step 1. Attach these to the top and bottom of the quilt. Press towards the border. Step 4: Again, lay the quilt flat and measure the length of the quilt across the centre. Cut two strips to this measurement from the strips you pieced in step 2. Attach these to the two sides of the quilt and press towards the border. Border 2 Step 1: Take 14 of the 2 patches set aside earlier and join them to form one long strip. Repeat. These two chains of two patches will form the top and bottom borders. Step 2: Take 17 of the remaining 2 patches and again, join them to form one long strip. Repeat with the remaining 17 two patches. These will form the side borders. Step 3: Attach the two side borders first. Remember they are pieced borders so there may be a slight variance in length. Take care to pin them in place, easing in any fullness as you go. Press to border 1. Step 4: Attach the top and bottom borders. Again, pin them in place and take care to ease in any fullness. Press to border 1. Jewel Box Quilt England Street Quilts
