Speech 1: Value Speech (What Matters to Me and Why) The purpose of this speech is to explore, identify, and express three of your core values as they relate to your life and your community. You are to clearly illustrate three of your values and discuss how these values shape your life and your world in a socially significant way. Your speech should: 1) speak to issues of social, community, or cultural relevance and 2) be something that your audience will find meaningful. Your three values will form the three main points of your speech. To guide your speech, choose three objects to symbolize three of your core values. For each value, please address the following questions: 1) What object have you chosen to symbolize this value? Why did you choose it? 2) Why is this value important to you? Where does this value come from? 3) How does this value shape your life and your community? (Use specific examples to demonstrate this value and its implications.) Speech Requirements:       

Your topic should be socially significant, informative and challenging to this audience. The speech should be approximately 3-4 minutes. The introduction and conclusion should be fully developed. There should be a definite, logical connective bridging each component of the speech. Each main point should be clearly stated and developed. Use three visual aids (one for each value) according to the guidelines in your text. Adhere to the principles of clear explanation. Use organizers (signposts, enumeration, acronyms, slogans), emphasis cues, and figurative analogies. Also use definitions where appropriate.  Be prepared to answer questions from the audience after the conclusion of your speech.  Your presentation skills should include:  Natural and conversational delivery  Extemporaneous mode using key-word note cards  Effective vocal and physical delivery skills  Effective use of visual aids Outline:  A typed, full-sentence outline following. Include a reference page in APA/MLA format if applicable. On the day of the speech bring the following:  Your note cards; peer feedback forms; your presentation aids; your outline.
