A Potted History St Edmund’s Chapel was rebuilt in 1616, the earlier chapel having been demolished by the Wrays of Glentworth. We are therefore celebrating the four hundredth anniversary of the present chapel this year. The seventeenth century was indeed a remarkable period for St Edmund’s, characterised by some of its most outstanding masters. These included Dr Robert Mapletoft, Sub Dean of Lincoln, who restored the chapel following the Civil War and who ended his career in 1677 as Master of Pembroke College, Cambridge, where he is buried. Also, William Mompresson, the so-called hero of Eyam in Derbyshire, who saved his parishioners by preventing the spread of the bubonic plague. The small exhibition, Care of Body and Soul, records, through artefacts, how the hospitals at Spital provided succour for the less privileged from the medieval period onwards. This included both bodily and spiritual care, typical of hospitals at the time. Image shows the restored chapel interior, 2016. Photo by Angela Montague.
