Splinter bids and other slam tries Balanced and unbalanced Slam tries. Splinter bids
A splinter bid is usually defined as a double jump shift in response to an opening bid of 1 of a major, or as a double jump shift by opener after partner has responded 1 of a Major. For example,1S-4C would be a splinter bid, showing club shortness, 4cards plus in support, 13-16 support points. 1D- 1S -4C would be a splinter bid, showing 4 cards plus in support, 19-21 support points. The splinter bid always promises game going values facing partners minimum promised point count, so 13-16 points facing an opening bid,19 points plus facing a response on 1 level showing 6 points plus. If you play 2/1 a single jump shift in a game forcing auction is a splinter bid showing 4 card or better support for partners suit and shortness in jump shift suit. For example 1S-2D -3H = splinter in support of Diamonds. For purposes of hand evaluation facing a splinter bid, the fewer HCP you have in partners short suit, the better your hand is, the more points you have in partners short suit, the worse your hand is.

Balanced and unbalanced Slam tries This convention only happens after No trump opening bid and Stayman with a major suit response. Now 3 of the other Major is a slam try in partners bid suit, with unspecified shortness (splinter)somewhere, cheapest bid by opener would ask where short suit is. 2 of a major in response to Stayman, then 4 diamonds by Stayman bidder shows a balanced slam try in support of bid major.
