Summer Research Institute
Application
GENERAL INFORMATION The Cal Teach Summer Research Institute is a nine-week program for math, science, and engineering undergraduates from across the UC system who are interested in pursuing a career in education. Participants conduct research in campus or nearby labs while also taking a seminar series which focuses on methods to bring research skills into K–12 classrooms. Summer Research Institute (SRI) students spend roughly 36 hours per week in their lab or research group. They support the ongoing work of their faculty or post-doc research mentor. We work with applicants to find placements that match their interests among the diverse research activities at Berkeley. Placements cover a wide variety of research disciplines; last summer alone we placed students in fields ranging from cosmology to environmental engineering to education. The research experience culminates with a poster presentation highlighting the work conducted over the summer. SRI students also attend a weekly seminar, The Integrating Research Methods into K–12 Teaching in Mathematics & Science (UGIS 189) seminar meets for four hours each week. Through this course, Summer Institute participants explore ways to integrate research techniques and skills into lessons for K–12 math and science classrooms. The seminar is co-taught by a current high school math or science teacher, who helps guide the lesson plan development process. The course also explores successful teaching methods through engaging demonstrations, and emphasizes collaborative review and revision of lesson components. UGIS 189 satisfies the research methods component of the Cal Teach minor. Summer Institute participants receive a $4000 stipend as well as a $1000 housing allowance. The program is nine weeks long and generally starts in the third week of June. Students may enroll in either 1 or 3 units of UGIS 189; for those seeking to meet the 6-unit financial aid threshold there are additional independent study units available.
DEADLINES There are two application deadlines. A priority deadline and a rolling application where individuals will be reviewed as received and as opening are available in research labs. Priority Application Deadline: March 1st
TO APPLY To apply, you must be a University of California system undergraduate student majoring in science, math, or engineering interested in a career in teaching.
