The past year at STAR can be summed up in one word: growth. More survivors than ever before walked through the doors of STAR seeking help. More community members engaged with STAR through our online media, outreach efforts and educational programming. And more organizations and individuals contributed financially to our work, making our program growth possible and sustainable. This July marked the 40th anniversary of our organization providing quality services to sexual trauma survivors and their loved ones in the Greater Baton Rouge community. Since our inception, we have served thousands of survivors by offering a non-judgmental, confidential source of support to help them move past the trauma of sexual assault. Today, STAR’s services continue to expand as community need grows. We now provide confidential advocacy, counseling, and legal services to individuals and families affected by sexual trauma at no cost. We are also engaging in institutional and social change work to build our community's capacity to prevent and respond responsibly to sexual violence. In the coming year, we expect to expand even more. Through the encouragement of our many community partners throughout South Louisiana, and the generosity of our supporters, STAR plans to begin providing services in New Orleans and Alexandria beginning January 2016.

Quilts express survivor's stories STAR partnered with the LSU Women’s Center and the Walls Project to bring Baltimore-based group FORCE: upsetting rape culture’s national monument quilt project to downtown Baton Rouge. The project displayed over 40 quilts handmade by survivors on the lawn of North Boulevard Town Square in August 2014.
Increased funding for survivor services The Office of Violence Against Women (OVW) awarded STAR $1.1 million dollars over three years to expand advocacy services to our rural Capital Area parishes, coordinate systems response and establish a legal services program for survivors.

During April, Sexual Assault Awareness Month, STAR was honored as the Louisiana Sexual Assault Center of the Year by the Louisiana Foundation Against Sexual Assault (LaFASA) and the Louisiana Coalition Against Domestic Violence (LCADV).
Championing survivors’ rights During the 2015 legislative session, STAR provided critical information and research to state legislators to improve state laws and protections for sexual assault survivors. These initiatives included the creation of a sexual assault protective order, requirements for law enforcement to have specialized sexual assault investigative training, establishment of a law for the non-consensual disclosure of private images, and creation of a misdemeanor sexual battery law. In addition, the name of Louisiana sex crime statutes aggravated rape, forcible rape and simple rape were changed to a more victim-centered first degree rape, second degree rape and third degree rape.

survivor services
Advocacy
Counseling
Our advocates provide immediate crisis intervention, support, information and referrals to survivors and their loved ones in the aftermath of a sexual assault. Advocates help survivors navigate the criminal justice system, provide education on the dynamics of sexual assault, provide access to an array of local services and develop safety plans. Advocates are available in-person or by phone to answer questions and provide support.
Our counselors provide brief, solutionfocused therapy meant to stabilize individuals in crisis and begin the trauma recovery process. Survivors and their loved ones are eligible for individual and group counseling sessions. Legal Our attorneys offer civil legal assistance at no cost to survivors of sexual trauma in the areas of education, employment, family law matters, housing, immigration, privacy, public benefits, victim rights and safety issues.
"After it happens...you just can't explain it. People question you constantly about why you didn't do something to stop it. The shame and judgement are what keep me up at night. STAR validated me. They reinforced to me that it wasn't my fault. The blame should be put on my abuser. Not me. Everyone needs that. Everyone needs to know that." ~ Survivor

NUMBER SERVED
Sexual trauma includes rape, attempted rape, child sexual abuse and a wide range of actions loosely referred to as sexual assault. Each of these types of trauma can occur in many different contexts—including among family members, intimate partners, friends and acquaintances and strangers—which affect the dynamics of the violence, as well as the way in which trauma is experienced. At STAR, we offer direct advocacy, counseling and legal services free of charge to anyone seeking to heal from sexual trauma. Over the past year, our dedicated staff and volunteers provided 1,940 direct services to survivors and their loved ones in the Capital Region.

systems response
Training Our staff offer a wealth of expertise on responding to and supporting survivors. Training topics include the neurobiology of trauma, sexual assault survivors rights and best practices for collecting and preserving evidence.
SART Coordination STAR coordinates the Sexual Assault Response Team (SART), which includes advocacy, medical and criminal justice partners working together to improve communication among disciplines, enhance evidence collection, increase prosecution rates and improve survivors' experiences. Volunteer Advocacy Program STAR relies on committed community members to provide support to survivors on our 24/7 hotline and accompany survivors to the hospital during day and night. Each year, STAR recruits, trains and manages over 50 volunteers.

Feedback from Participants for our Neurobiology of Trauma Training: "Information was very informative. Speaker gave lots of insight as to what goes on in the mind of the victim and why some of the responses seem so unreal."
systems response
In addition to our support services for survivors, we also work to improve the many systems that survivors may encounter—such as the legal and criminal justice systems, medical and mental health providers and schools and universities—to spark institutional change. This year, we provided training to 300 professionals throughout the state.
"Presentation was very informative. Speaker presented in a way that was easy to understand." "Great presentation! Very informative." "It was amazing!" "Wonderful! Informative! Useful! Applicable for real conversations in my everyday life!" "I thought the training was very informative and explained what advocates see when working with survivors. Great!" "Wonderful presentation and speaker!" STAR Annual Report 2014-2015 | Page 9
social change To carry out our vision to build a community free from oppression and sexual trauma, we engage the community through outreach and education to youth and adults to create social change. Through education, we seek to increase awareness of sexual assault, encourage support for survivors and inspire our supporters to take action to help us end sexual violence in our community. We engaged 2,123 youth and adults this year through our social change work.

social change
3-D Peer Educators Program
STAR provides educational opportunities for community members to deepen their understanding of sexual violence and trauma, as well as to empower participants to reduce the prevalence of sexual violence and abuse in our community.
"The night after I went through the Creating Change workshop, someone close to me disclosed to me that they had been raped last year. Without having gone through the workshop, I would have had no idea what to do or say. Listening to her describe her experience and how she felt about it reminded me of everything we had talked about in the workshop, so I felt capable of responding in a supportive way even though it was so unexpected." - Training Participant
