TITLE: Statistical Modeling of Power Grid Uncertainties and Vulnerability SPEAKER: Dr. Zhifang Wang, Electrical and Computer Engineering, VCU TIME: 11:00-12:00, Friday, Feb. 10, 2017 PLACE: Room 4119, Grace Harris Hall
ABSTRACT: Electric power system is one of the most important critical infrastructures whose reliable and efficient operation play a vital role for the essential functioning of our society. Massive economic and social impacts of blackouts have made grid vulnerability studies critical. Higher penetration of renewables like wind generation into power grid will introduce an unprecedented amount of uncertainty into the grid that might severely affect the vulnerability of the grid to cascading failures. In this talk the invited speaker will introduce an uncertainty modeling approach using time-series forecasting technique that captures the uncertainties introduced from renewable generation and smart grid loads and reveals their frequency domain characteristics and the study on the grid vulnerability to cascading overload failures based on an OPF-stochastic model. The proposed approach has been tested on an IEEE test system and verified useful for grid vulnerability studies.
Bio: Dr. Zhifang Wang joined VCU in August 2012 and is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering. Her research interests include electric power system modeling and optimization, vulnerability analysis, and renewable integration. She received the B.S. and the M.S. degree in 1995 and 1998 respectively from EE Tsinghua University Beijing, China and the Ph.D. degree from ECE Cornell University in 2005. Dr. Wang became IEEE Senior Member in 2012 and received 2013 IEEE Donal G. Fink Award with her collaborators. She also received 2015 HICSS?48 Best Paper Award. She has published more than 30 peer-reviewed conference papers and 12 journal papers and 3 book chapters on power system related researches. She is the director of the Electrical Power and Energy System (EPES) Lab at the ECE department at VCU which include 4 PhD graduate students, 2 MS graduate students, 1 undergraduate Honor student and two DERI (Dean?s Early Research Initiative) High School students from Maggie Walker HS.
