VCE Geography Description

The study of Geography is a structured way of exploring, analysing and understanding the characteristics of places in our world. Students of Geography study key questions concerning places and geographic events, explored through fieldwork and case study investigations. Students develop their understanding the world, appreciate its complexity, the diversity and interactions of its environments, economies and cultures and the processes that helped form

Skill Development

Construction and interpretation of visual data such as maps, graphs and diagrams. Collecting, presenting and analysing fieldwork and research data.

Topics & Major Assessment Tasks Unit 1 - Hazards and Disasters

Unit 1 Outcome 1: On completion of this unit students should be able to analyse, describe and explain the nature of hazards and impacts of hazard events at a range of scales. Unit 1 Outcome 2: On completion of this unit students should be able to analyse and explain the nature, purpose and effectiveness of a range of responses to selected hazards and disasters.

Unit 2 - Tourism

Unit 2 Outcome 1: On completion of this unit the student should be able to analyse, describe and explain the nature of tourism at a range of scales. Unit 2 Outcome 2: On completion of this unit the student should be able to analyse and explain the impacts of tourism on people, places and environments and evaluate the effectiveness of strategies for managing tourism.

Unit 3 - Changing The Land

Unit 3 Outcome 1: On completion of this unit students should be able to analyse, describe and explain land use change and assess its impacts. Unit 3 Outcome 2: On completion of this unit students should be able to analyse, describe and explain processes that result in changes to land cover and discuss the impacts and responses resulting from these changes.

Unit 4 - Population

Unit 4 Outcome 1: On completion of this unit students should be able to analyse, describe and explain population dynamics on a global scale. Unit 4 Outcome 2: On completion of this unit students should be able to analyse, describe and explain the nature of significant population issues and challenges in selected locations and evaluate responses.

Activities/Camps/Excursions

Fieldwork - This will likely be a local scale fieldwork excursion designed to explore the local tourism industry.

Career Options

The wide-ranging critical thinking, research and analytical skills that Geography students develop will provide a sound academic base for many post school options. This said there are key careers to which studies of Geography can lead. These include environmental management and conservation, wildlife management and nature tourism; town and urban planning; climatology and physical sciences.
