The Importance of Summer Reading Hello at Home, Parents and caregivers play an important role in supporting readers, and research shows that the more children read—at school and at home—the better readers they become. Keeping up with reading practice over summer vacation is especially important so that children don’t lose the gains they made during the school year. Here are some suggestions for making reading fun this summer:
Change where you read—under a tree, by the ocean or pool, in a tent in the backyard! Show pre-readers how to recognize simple sight words and then find them in magazines or news-
papers. Mark the finds with stickers. Get in the kitchen and make treats mentioned in stories, or by following recipes from cookbooks or the Internet. Get older kids together and form book clubs—a great way to keep up school friendships over the summer! Plan field trips as extensions of shared readings. Attend free story times at public libraries and bookstores. Listen to audiobooks on long car or plane rides. Help readers celebrate their skills by reading to younger children, pets, or stuffed animals.
“Read” wordless picture books— a great opportunity to practice storytelling and making inferences! Allow kids to voice opinions about what they have read, with a simple thumbs up or down, or get more elaborate with a review notebook and star stickers!
Don’t forget to complete the Bedwell Summer Reading Log and return it to school in September for special recognition! Have a safe and fun summer! Happy Reading! Sue Crowley, Lauren Smith, & Donna Zaborowski
Again This Summer! Bedwell Lending Library This summer, Bedwell will once again host a lending library program, made possible through our generous HSA. Children who are reading on levels A/1 through G/11 will receive letters inviting them to visit Bedwell Mondays through Thursdays, 9-11 A.M. to borrow books to read and practice at home. The lending library currently focuses on providing books at the earlier levels because these materials can be difficult to find at libraries and book stores. We hope to see families take advantage of this exciting opportunity!
