Introduction This booklet is the 1st edition of the academysoccercoach international Session Sharing Scheme. The idea behind this scheme is very simple. “Share three of your favourite practices and in return, you receive the favourite practices of all the other coaches who join the scheme” In addition, I have shared thirty of my personal favourite practices. The session index and featured coaches are shown on the right. The sessions are designed by the individual coaches who work at different levels of the game and in different countries around the world. I would like to say a big thank you to these coaches for participating in the session share and wish them every success in their future careers. One player is nominated as the defender

The coach alternates serves to each team

The other players must shield their ball from the defender

The players must head the ball and try to score a goal, the player must then react and run to become the new goalkeeper in the game The winning team is the first to score 5 goals

If the defender knocks a ball from a players cone the roles are reversed with the defender going out to shield and the player coming in and becoming the new defender,

Two players Game 1 – the coach calls a body part, the player must touch this body part and on the coaches call of “snatch” the players must quickly grab the ball Game 2 – the coach call left or right, the players must side step backwards to the cone and then back to kick the ball Game 3 – the coach calls left or right, the players must run forward to the cone and then back to kick the ball © Copyright www.academysoccercoach.co.uk 2011

Two players work inside each of the 10x10yd areas. Each player has a ball. To begin, one player is nominated as the attacker and the other player as the defender. To score a point, the attacker must dribble their ball and stop it by a cone. The defender can stop the attacker from scoring by arriving at the cone first. After 30 seconds, the coach should stop the practice and make the players change roles in the game. This game encourages changes of speed, turns and skills to lose the defender

One player is nominated as the defender Two teams of players. Two balls work at the same time

The other players are the attackers and have one ball each.

The players must dribble to the mannequin, complete a skilland then shoot at goal

The attackers score points by dribbling through a gate to the outside of the pitch.

Immediately the players have to react and sprint through the gate.

The attackers must then re-enter the pitch via a different gate. If the defender tackles the attacker, then the roles are reversed.

3 attackers in each area the two defenders must run the length of the pitch and then go to win the ball in each area 3v2. Time how long it takes the two defenders to win all three balls and get back to the starting position Progression – after winning the ball in the 1st zone (3v2) the three attackers in the 1st zone can join the attackers in the 2nd zone to make a 6v2 situation. This also continues in the 3rd zone with a 9v2 situation.

Two teams. Each team must defend a ball that is placed on top of a cone at their baseline

The blue team are the attackers and the red team defenders. Three blue players go into one area whilst the last player goes into one of the other three zones.

To score a goal, the team in possession must pass the ball and knock the ball off the opponents cone.

The red team place one defender into each zone.

To progress this game you can include a rule where all players must touch the ball before a goal can be scored. This rule encourages patient possession / build up play. In addition, adding two balls for the teams to defend encourages switching of play.

The blue attackers play 3v1 and try to complete 5 passes. If successful, the blue players pass into their team mate in the new zone and two players run to support. The remaining blue player must now go into another free zone. However, if the red team win possession then the roles are quickly reversed. © Copyright www.academysoccercoach.co.uk 2011

Set up 6 balls at varying distances and angles around the penalty box. The striker must run to a ball of their choice and shoot first time. Now the striker must run around the starting cone before they can shoot the next ball. At the same time, the goalkeeper has to go around one of the cones at the side of the 6yd box. Resting players stand by the goal and collect the balls.

Each team send a player into each end zone as target players. The target players are active in the game and defend 1v1 against each other. To start, the red team are in possession and trying to pass to their target player. If successful, the target player and the passing player change positions. Immediately the blue team must drop back into the opposite half where the game recommences with the red team trying to pass to the opposite target player. If the blue team gain possession, they too try to find their target players to score a point.

Three teams of players The white team go into the top half of the pitch. The blue and red teams go into the bottom half of the pitch. To start, the coach passes a ball into the red team. The red and blue team immediately play a 5v5 possession game. The team who complete 5 passes first must then play a longer aerial pass to the waiting white team. The team making the pass now rest. Players work in pairs to complete the warm up. The players must run at the same time to the first cone and then go off diagonally to the right/left to the next cone before returning to the starting position. Players must complete various dynamic movements suck as – skipping, jockeying forwards/backwards, side skips, leg kicks, high knees, carioca etc Now the players run to 1st cone before racing back. The following races are used – (1) barge each other and race back (2) hold each others shirts, push off and race back (3) jump to do a belly bump and race back.

Two team game However, there are no referees, not coaching, no winners or losers, no set playing area, no offside, no tackling (only interceptions or mistakes that force a change of possession)

The players are mini ogres (from Shrek) and they have to plant mushroom seeds all over the forest by rolling their mushroom ball over every part of the playing area.

The only requirement is that every pass, shot, cross, control, dribble, save, header MUST BE OUTRAGEOUS.

When the coach shouts “I'm an OGRE” the mini ogres must plant the seeds by 1 – performing inside taps on the ball 2 – toe taps on the ball 3 – flick the ball up (dig up/pack the dirt)

Every player is encouraged to try something outrageous all the time.

The coach must make this fun by taking on the role of the OGRE © Copyright www.academysoccercoach.co.uk 2011

30 second games

Two teams play a possession game After each pass, the player making the pass must run out of the pitch to touch a pole and then run back into the pitch. This rule means the team in possession now have a player less and must try to keep the ball when outnumbered. The players must – scan the pitch, communicate with team mates, shield and protect the ball

Two teams of six players. Each team split their team into two groups of three players

The red players pass the ball down to the blue player Immediately a 1v1 commences

The teams play a normal 3v3 game. However, when a goal is scored the team conceding the goal must leave the pitch and be replaced by the 2nd team in that colour. The team scoring the goal must all run back to their goal and touch one of the posts before they can continue their involvement in the game. This rule creates a counter attack situation.

Players score goals when the ball is stopped on the opponents end line. After 30 seconds, the winning player moves up the ladder and the losing player must go down the ladder. If the players draw, a game of rock, paper, scissors is used to find the winner. © Copyright www.academysoccercoach.co.uk 2011

Two teams and two neutral players (who are inside 5x5yd areas)

The players are rotated every two minutes

The teams must try to regain possession of the ball by using the neutral players in order to create a two player overload.

To start, the coach passes into the two attackers. The attackers must attempt to score a goal by passing wide and getting into the box for a cross or by passing into the target players and making a supporting run to receive a set back to shoot. If the defenders win possession, they pass out to the neutrals and the roles are reversed.

To score a goal, the team must pass into a neutral player who passes back into a different player on the same team. The blue team has 7 players and must quickly pass the ball and change the point of attack in order to create space to shoot at goal. The four defenders must work together to pressure the 7 attackers in order to defend the goals. If the red team win the ball , they must complete three passes to score a goal for their team

Two channels run at the same time. The dribbling player dribbles for 10yds and then enters the first square to beat the 1st defender in a 1v1 situation.

The blue team start the game as the attackers. The aim for the blue team is to play a one-two (bounce pass) off a red player in the corner gates.

If successful, the dribbling player enters the second square to beat the 2nd defender in a 1v1 situation.

If a red player is used, then they are now out of the game and the blue team are trying to play out to the red players in the other gates. The ultimate aim for the blue team is to score on all four red players.

Now if the dribbler is successful they have a free shot at goal against the goalkeeper. Progression - The coach can add a “free” player inbetween the channel for the dribblers to play give and goes with to beat the defenders.

However, if the yellow team regain possession they must quickly pass out to the coach. This action restarts the game . Now the yellows attack and the blues defend

4v1 keep away square The passing players must move after passing the ball and change position with one of their team mates. for instance, the blue players start in each corner of the area and can pass to their right or left. If you pass to the left then you change positions with the team mate on your right – and vice versa The only time the players don't change positions is when a diagonal pass is made © Copyright www.academysoccercoach.co.uk 2011

Two groups of players

Two teams and one goalkeeper

One group goes into each area and numbers themselves 1 to ? (whatever number they have).

No player is allowed inside the goalkeepers area which is marked in a circle by the cones.

The players must pass the ball in sequence.

The team in possession must try to combine with quick passing combinations in order to create shooting opportunities

The coach applies different rules to the game so that the players are moving off the ball after making a pass 1 – Jump to head, 2 – sprint 5yds, 3 – sprint around the outside poles, 4 – on coaches call, players dribble to other area

The coach can modify the rules in this game to increase difficulty. The rules can be 3/5/10 passes before shooting or limiting the players to a 2 or 1 touch finish

The two midfielders must combine to pass into the forwards by completing a crossover movement. The forwards quickly combine and then pass back to a midfielder who plays out wide. The two wide players must also combine in order to cross for the two forwards to score a goal. The forward not shooting must now react and run around the coach in order to receive a 2nd ball to shoot at goal. The players now rotate positions on the circuit. © Copyright www.academysoccercoach.co.uk 2011

Two teams play and one team rests The two teams play 4v4 inside the pitch.

Two teams . Each team send one target player into the opponents half and two defenders in their own half

Two teams The teams play a 4v4 game inside the area

The coach continually passes balls onto the pitch for the teams to challenge for and compete to be the first team to score 4 goals.

Inside the 30x20yd area the teams play a 4v4+neutral game. The teams must complete 4 passes before playing a pass into their target player. Now four players run to attack 5v2 against the opponents defenders.

The rules of the game include -Teams must make 1 pass before shooting - to increase difficulty, teams must complete a combination between players of either a one-two, overlap or wall pass before shooting

If a goal is scored, the game restarts inside the 30x20yd area. However, if the defenders win possession they can pass back to their team mates who counter attack the opponents goal in a 5v2 situation

The teams must complete three passes before playing a ball out of the area for a team mate to run and go 1v1 with the GK. The coach is used to serve balls into the area, whilst the assistant is used to call offside (player out of area before a pass is made) © Copyright www.academysoccercoach.co.uk 2011

Each player has a ball and comes inside the coned square. The coach must show a skill (for example – cryuff turn). Now the players must dribble outside the square and perform the skill before dribbling back into the square. The players race to get back into the square first to receive gold, silver, bronze medals or premier league, champions league, world cup winner etc. The coach can now build the skills together like Lego by asking the players to complete two, three or four of the skills learnt in the session

Two teams Three teams of players The first blue defender must pass across to the red attacker of their choice and go to defend 1v2 The second blue defender must count to ten before they can enter the pitch to help their team mate and make the game 2v2. If the blue defender wins possession from the two red attackers, then the second defender immediately joins the game

Two teams join together to play 6v3 possession. The defending team must try to win possession and then pass out to the coach or dribble out of the pitch If successful, then the team giving away possession must now become the new defending team.

The red midfielder must make a long pass into the goalkeeper and then enter the pitch to play out of defence with the two red defenders. Immediately the two blue attackers run onto the pitch to stop the three red defenders and the red goalkeeper from playing out of defence. The aim for the red players is to make a pass to the resting red midfielder. The player making this pass then goes off the pitch and the game is restarted. However, if the blue attackers win the ball then they try to score in the goal.

Four players go into grid one (one player picks up the bib and plays as the defender)

Two teams of players. Each team is nominated a half of the pitch and the teams must go into their half

Four players also go into grid two (one player picks up the bib and plays as the defender)

To start, the coach passes into the blue team and calls for one of the red players to run into that half of the pitch.

Finally three players go into grid three (the players leave the bib on the floor) In grid one and two, the players play 3v1. if the defender wins the ball, the defender drops the bib and the player losing possession must run into grid three (zone without a defender) pick up the bib and defend.

The blue team try to keep possession 4v1. if successful the coach calls for a 2nd, 3rd, and 4th defender. If the blues give possession away, then the player making the mistake must quickly run into the red teams half where the game recommences with the red team keeping possession

The players must complete a skill when dribbling across area using the obstacles in the area 1 – slalom the poles 2 – skill on the mannequin 3 – in and out of cones 4 – turn in the gates 5 – one-two off the rebound board (or with a coach)

The second attacker must now make an overlapping run to support his team mate. The attacker in possession can now pass to the overlapping team mate or can use a disguised “dummy” pass to trick the defender and gain space to dribble and score themselves.

The coach starts the game by passing across the area to the neutral player. Immediately two players from each team run out for the side of the goal in order to play the game The neutral player now passes to one of the teams and joins that team to make a 3v2 situation. © Copyright www.academysoccercoach.co.uk 2011
