Technical Theatre - Production Team (Interview Required)

Production Team Production Manager

The Production Manager works closely with the Director, TD, AD, and House Manager to document all purchases, invoices, and reimbursements. This student is responsible for collecting paperwork, tracking orders, collecting and writing receipts, and working with the bookkeeper to maintain clear documentation of finances throughout the course and following the run of a show. The Production Manager will also assist with volunteer coordination.

Publicity Coordinator

The Publicity Coordinator will help plan all in-school and community publicity for the production. This student will work with the Director to understand the concept of the production in order to arrange for the poster, tickets, and playbills to be designed and printed. This student will work with the Production Manager to sell playbill ads. The Publicity Coordinator will also coordinate the production of a video trailer, and collect archival materials.

House Manager

This student will come on board in the last few weeks of the production to arrange and coordinate the ushers needed for every performance. This student will supervise the ushers during the production. The student will be responsible for officially opening the doors to let the audience in and close the doors at the start of the show and after intermission. This student will also coordinate with ENCORE on ticket and intermission sales (snacks). The House manager will be responsible for the safety and security of the guests, will make sure any special needs of our guests are met, and help with theater clean-up at the end of the production.

Assistant Director

The Assistant Director works closely with the Director, Technical Director, Stage Manager, designers, cast, and crew to ensure the success of the show. The AD is expected to run warm-ups, take and give notes, address publicity concerns (t-shirts, posters, playbills), follow-up on pre-show/intermission assignments, assist with the budget, communicate with front of house, and motivate/support the cast and crew. In addition, the AD will have the opportunity to directed several scenes throughout the play. These will be determined at the start of the rehearsal process.

Student Technical Director

The Student Technical Director is the supervisor of the stage and all that happens on it related to the production from beginning through strike. The primary job will be overseeing the construction of the set and props. This student will also be coordinating the lighting and sound load-in and work calls so everyone can get their job done. The Student TD will be provided with all the design drawings and construction drawings and help with material orders, controlling inventory, and construction techniques. The Student TD will lead the shop crew on a daily basis and keep all areas on track. This student will work with the TD to make sure the show is a success.

Production Team Stage Manager

The Stage Manager works closely with the Director, AD, TD, designers, cast, and crew to ensure the success of the show. The Stage Manager provides organizational support throughout the rehearsal and production process. The Stage Manager is expected to create contact lists, collect and file all paperwork, take blocking notes, prompt actors, record rehearsal reports, and email the ensemble with all updates. This student is also responsible for organizing and calling cues during the run of the production. The Stage Manager is required to maintain a promptbook with all information pertaining to the show.

Scenic (Set) Designer

The Scenic Designer works closely with the Technical Director and Director to envision and convey all scenery, furniture, and set dressings that the audience will experience during a production. The Scenic Designer is responsible for researching the time period (when a Dramaturg is unavailable) and cultural influences surrounding the play in order to design efficiently. This student will also work with costumes, lighting, sound, etc. to discuss and convey the Director’s vision.

Lighting Designer

The Lighting Designer works closely with the Technical Director and Director to envision and convey the time and mood of a play through the use of lights. The Lighting Designer will note all lighting cues mentioned in the script before writing and programming the cues for the run. This student will also work with the scenic designer, costumes, sound, stage manager, etc. to discuss and convey the Director’s vision. The Lighting Designer is also required to attend rehearsals throughout the process and communicate with the Stage Manager in order to light the director’s blocking. The Lighting Designer will also collaborate with he Master Electrician in order to hang and focus all instruments.

Sound Designer

The Sound Designer is responsible for the audio design and implementation of all speakers, microphones, cabling, recording and playback needed for the production. This student may end up being the sound board operator for the show, but not necessarily. This student will coordinate the schedule of the sound crew with TD and Student TD.

Props Designer

The Props Designer will work with the Director and Stage Manager to create and update a props list and help decide where props will be stored during rehearsals and performances. The Props Designer is responsible for the acquisition of all props needed for the production, including getting any rehearsal props. This may include building or making props, pulling props from CHS stock, borrowing props from other locations or buying props. The Props Designer will need to attend several rehearsals to build the props list.
