develop an understanding of the influence of technology on history by exploring how people of all times and places have increased their capability by using their unique skills to innovate, improvise, and invent. They gain an understanding of technology innovation and the fact that it often results when ideas, knowledge, or skills are shared within a technology, among technologies, or across other fields of study. Students develop an understanding of engineering design, the formal process that transforms ideas into products or systems of the designed world. They select and use manufacturing technologies and understand that modern manufacturing technologies produce quality goods at low prices, enhancing the quality of life for many people. Students select and use construction technologies and recognize that cultural norms, environmental conditions, and the requirements of enterprises and institutions impact the design of structures. Opportunities are provided that enable students to select and use energy and power technologies and to explore the processing and controlling of the energy resources that have been important in the development of contemporary technology. They become familiar with information and communication technologies and their role in maintaining competitive economic growth. The course concludes with the synthesizing of major ideas through an understanding of the core concepts of technology, with an emphasis on “systems thinking” and related principles.
Engineering Design Course Code: 812003
Prerequisites: Grade 11 or 12

Engineering Design and Development is an engineering research course in which students work in teams to research, design and construct a solution to an open-ended engineering problem. Students apply principles developed in the four preceding courses and are guided by a community mentor. They must present progress reports, submit a final written report, and defend their solutions to a panel of outside reviewers at the end of the school year.
HIGH SCHOOL Technological Design Course Code: 812103 Credits: 1.0 ATE Prerequisites: Grade 10-12 students who have passed Foundations of Technology In Technological Design, engineering scope, content, and professional practices are presented through practical applications. Students in engineering teams apply technology, science, and mathematics concepts and skills to solve engineering design problems and innovate designs. Students research, develop, test, and analyze engineering designs using criteria such as design effectiveness, public safety, human factors, and ethics. This course is an essential experience for students who are interested in technology, innovation, design, and engineering.
Advanced Design Applications Course Code: 812113 Prerequisites: Grade 11 or 12
Credits: 1.0 ATE
This course focuses on the three dimensions of technological literacy - knowledge, ways of thinking and acting, and capabilities - with the goal of students developing the characteristics of technologically literate citizens. It employs teaching/learning strategies that enable students to explore and deepen their understanding of “big ideas” regarding technology and makes use of a variety of assessment instruments to reveal the extent of understanding.
