Name: Clayton Main Title of the talk: What we learned from 5 million books Speaker: Jean-Baptiste Michel and Erez Lieberman Aiden researchers Presentation date: July 2011 Date viewed: 2/11/2017
Summary of the talk: In this funny speech, Jean and Erez start by showing how it would be awesome to know 5 million books but very impractical. They explain how google is expanding a library of digitized books, meaning that the books and the words inside them become data and metadata. And that’s exactly what google did. Jean and Erez then took this data and turned it into statistics. They explained how now we would be able to take something like a word or phrase and see its usage over a certain number of years. You can also format the data related to the books, for instance what years an author was more active and from there you could figure out why. the rest of the speech is full of funny slides and graphs showing how overs used this program to pull data.
Interesting things I learned from the talk: It’s very interesting how we can use data for more than just business and professional needs. We can use it in creative and hilarious ways. Maybe Discovering something funny we want to share with others.
Evaluation of the presenter: This is the first TED talk I have ever seen with two speakers instead of one. However, the blend of personality’s and speech styles made this a very funny, entertaining, and informative speech
Evaluation of the talk: This talk is defiantly worth wile even for someone whose not interested in learning about how we use data. Both speakers did a great job and presented their content well.
