The “Related Round Robin Rounds”-format: A new research and publication format for Psychological Science Current research and publication practices contribute to the existence, and maintenance, of issues such as underpowered studies (Maxwell, 2004) and too much data-analysis flexibility (Simmons, Nelson, Simonsohn, 2011; Wagenmakers, Wetzels, Borsboom, van der Maas, & Kievit, 2012), the lack of close replications of research findings (e.g. Koole & Lakens, 2012; Makel, Plucker, & Hegarty, 2012; Pashler & Wagemakers, 2012), the file drawer-problem (cf. Giner-Sorolla, 2012), less than optimal amount of theory development and - testing (Ferguson & Heene, 2012; Fiedler, Kutzner, & Krueger, 2012), and wasted recourses as a results of the aforementioned issues (cf. Ioannidis, 2012). All of these issues probably contribute to the low replicability of psychological science (i.e. Open Science Collaboration, 2015), and result in the possibly typical research and publication process of psychological phenomena and their accompanying theories. Meehl (1978) describes this process as follows: “There is a period of enthusiasm about a new theory, a period of attempted application to several fact domains, a period of disillusionment as the negative data come in, a growing bafflement about inconsistent and unreplicable empirical results, multiple resort to ad-hoc excuses, and then finally people just sort of lose interest in the thing and pursue other endeavors” (p. 807). In what follows, a new research format will be described: the “Related Round Robin Rounds”format. This format has incorporated already offered, and successfully implemented, solutions to some the issues mentioned above. I reasoned it might still be worthwhile to share the idea, because of the crucial final step: making sure all follow-up research is 1) of the highest quality, 2) will be out in the open no matter how the results turn out, and 3) as a result will allow for an optimal process of theory development and -testing. This format could contribute to solving issues pertaining to underpowered studies and data-analysis flexibility, close replications of research findings, the file-drawer problem, and optimal theory development and – testing. Most of all, it is hoped that this format will contribute to stopping the typical research process of psychological phenomena and theories described by Meehl (1978), and replace it with a more optimal process that could possibly help improve psychological science fast, to a large extent, and in a structural manner The “Related Round Robin Rounds”-format The “Related Round Robin Rounds” (RRRR)- format involves several researchers, or groups of researchers, who will prospectively replicate each others’ findings (c.f. Aarts, 2015; Schweinsberg et al., 2016) which are all related to a single specific theory or phenomenon. Studies will all follow the “Registered Report”-format (Nosek & Lakens, 2014) which ensures the studies will be pre-registered, highly-powered, and the results will be published no matter how they turn out. This tackles issues of underpowered studies (Maxwell, 2004), too much data-analysis flexibility (Simmons, Nelson, Simonsohn, 2011; Wagenmakers, Wetzels, Borsboom, van der Maas, & Kievit, 2012), and the file drawer-problem (cf. Giner-Sorolla, 2012). The RRRR-format starts when a researcher, or team of researchers, comes up with a new research finding they want to rigorously test. At this point the researcher, or the team, proposes to have their new findings be replicated by other researchers. The subsequent findings would all be published, regardless of outcome, in a single article. This would in some way resemble the ‘multiple-study’ - paper that have been published frequently over the last few years, only it would depict more close instead of conceptual replications, and these close replications would be performed by different scientists, in different labs. This tackles the issues of too few direct, or close, replications (Koole & Lakens, 2012; Makel, Plucker, & Hegarty, 2012; Pashler & Wagemakers, 2012) and the file drawer-problem (cf. GinerSorolla, 2012).

When the results of the replication of the new findings are known, all teams now come up with their own follow-up study related to the recent new findings and general theory, or phenomenon that is under investigation. All involved parties would each come up with a new research idea based on some aspect, or the totality, of the results coming from the first ‘round’ of the RRRR -format. These new research ideas would then also be prospectively replicated in the RRRR -format, and you would hereby end up with multiple rounds of replicated findings, which all relate to a single theory or phenomenon. The total process would entail a clear distinction of post - hoc theorizing and theory testing (c.f. Wagenmakers, Wetzels, Borsboom, van der Maas, & Kievit, 2012), ‘rounds’ of theory building, testing, and reformulation (cf. Wallander, 1992) and could be viewed as a systematic manner of data collection (cf. Chow, 2002). Each of these rounds would be published at a single outlet after completion (at one of the journals that offer the Registered Report-format, please see https://osf.io/8mpji/wiki/home/). This would lead to highly recognizable information for researchers working on a specific topic or theory. For instance, the article could be named “Ego-depletion: RRRR round 1”, the next round of findings could be called “Ego-depletion: RRRR round 2”, etc. Other interested researchers could join the efforts at any time. If enough researchers join, decisions concerning optimally dealing with resources regarding replication can be made, so no resources are wasted (i.c. smaller groups can be formed which replicate each other’s work). It might also be interesting to note that the RRRR-format could lead to interesting information as well. For instance, perhaps the findings of a later round turn out to be more replicable due to enhanced accurate knowledge about a specific theory or phenomenon. Or perhaps it will show that the devastating typical process of research into psychological phenomena and theories described by Meehl (1978) will be cutoff sooner, or will follow a different path. The information gathered from a few rounds of the RRRRformat could allow for very interesting meta-scientific research into the process, and progress, of psychological science. References Aarts, A.
