Message from Lynne Oldfield, Headmistress Dear Parents and friends of Haileybury Almaty, Haileybury is committed to its role in shaping its pupils to be caring and thoughtful individuals, able and willing to contribute to society. We encourage all our pupils to involve themselves in community projects and service. To further this the School Council has been meeting regularly and on their agenda has been decisions regarding how each of the houses can commit to projects which all house pupils can then support in a variety of ways. Within the CCA programme, there are opportunities for pupils to engage in service projects. As you will be aware, Haileybury Almaty supports the International Award (the Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme) and we encourage pupils from year 9 to take part in this. The service component of this award is a valuable experience for pupils and brings benefits to the local communities. The International Award is highly valued by universities across the world to demonstrate pupils’ commitment to service. Pupils from School Council have been working with Friends of Haileybury to find additional projects and charities we can support. There are many worthwhile projects and charities that we can work with and support. For a number of years we have supported projects such as the UWS Chan Tuk School in the Stung Treng region of Cambodia and the Dara Foundation in Almaty. We will continue to support these but we are also considering how else we can provide service to our local, national and global communities. We will continue to keep you informed about the differences we are trying to make. Finally, we are very pleased to be co-hosting the CASC 2017 football tournament from the 1st to 4th November. We have schools visiting from Bishkek, Tashkent, Astana and Almaty. We wish all our teams success and we are delighted to welcome so many pupils and their parents to Haileybury. Staff news Two of our Maths and Olympiad teachers Alexey Konanykhin and Vladimir Zhuk participated in V International Contest for teachers of mathematics, physics and computer science. This competition was organized by Kazakhstani Association of Mathematics Teachers under the support of the Ministry of Education and Science of the Republic of Kazakhstan and the Republican Scientific and Practical Centre "Daryn". Alexey and Vladimir scored the same number of points, more than the other 105 participants from Kazakhstan and Sakha (Yakutia) Republic (Russia). They won the competition and have been awarded with a 1st Degree Diploma. We are immensely proud of their achievements.

It is with regret that I am informing you that Tom Wilde unexpectedly resigned this week from his post as Deputy Headmaster of Haileybury Almaty, giving one month’s notice. We would like to express our gratitude to Tom for his contributions to the development of HAL over the last three years and we wish him every success in his new career. In the interim SLT are reassigning his responsibilities. The role of Designated Senior Lead for Safeguarding will be taken on by me and I will be ably assisted by two Deputy DSLs, the two Heads of School Matthew Aston and Rhys Thomas following their additional training next week. Kind regards,

Ms Lynne Oldfield Headmistress

Fright Night As part of our Halloween celebrations here at Haileybury we hold our annual Fright Night Party and Scary costume day. Over 200 secondary students came dressed in Halloween theme costumes and the school was decorated to reflect the holiday. Our Key Stage 3 students enjoyed a Fright Night party at lunch time with a pizza lunch, competitions and of course lots of dancing. In the evening 50 of our Key stage 4 and key stage 5 students stayed behind to eat dinner together and watch a scary movie in the Drama Studio. Overall it was a great success and we raised over 80,000KZT for charity. Well done to all! Mr Liversidge

Trip to Konayev Museum On November 1, Year 10 pupils visited the apartment of the foremost statesman of his age Dinmukhamed Konayev. In 2012, the apartment became a memorial house. We were able to see a huge library and a unique collection of 450 lighters from different parts of the world. Also there are a lot of gifts from foreign leaders, including Queen Elizabeth II. Although Konayev held the post of First Secretary of the Communist Party of Kazakhstan, by nature he was a simple person. We hope that our students learned much more about Dinmukhamed Konayev. Ms G. Dosmambetova, Teacher of Kazakh

Year 3 Music Concert Thank you to all students who played so beautifully in Year 3 music concerts this Thursday, and to all the parents who came to support. It was a good start for our concerts and wonderful occasion, and really showed the marked improvement made by our Haileybury musicians.

Music for assemblies We would once again like to invite pupils to play in senior assembly. Pupils receive a blue card each time they play in assembly, and performing to other pupils is a great achievement for their portfolio. Please encourage your children to play for us and contact me ([email protected]) for more information.

LCM exams This year, we are very excited to announce that Haileybury Almaty has once again been accepted as a centre for London College of Music examinations. We will be entering the first students for these exams by the end of this term - December 15th so that they can take their exams in March/April. Practical exams are available for all levels of ability, starting with preparatory levels, and working up to Grade 8, which is the most challenging level. Beyond Grade 8, there are performing and teaching diplomas as well as theory exams available. These exams will have fees attached and more details of these fees will be available soon. Please do not hesitate to contact Svetlana Stoyannidu ([email protected]) if you have any questions about these exams.

Primary School News The Primary school students were straight back into action this week. I have been impressed at how quickly everyone has settled into working hard and doing exactly what is expected of them. Tuesday was a particularly scary day at school because of the wonderful costumes that the children were wearing for Halloween. I could tell that everyone had made a big effort and it made the day very enjoyable indeed. This week we also had our first music concert with Year 3 performers providing excellent entertainment when they exhibited their musical skills during the Key Stage 2 assembly. There will be another opportunity next week to dress up for Primary History Day on Thursday 9th November. Have a good weekend! Mr Matthew Aston, Head of Primary

Also representing our school this week were Mr Vladimir Zhuk and Mr Alexey Konanykhin.
