Message from Lynne Oldfield, Headmistress Dear Parents and friends of Haileybury Almaty, This week we have had much to celebrate within school and indeed assembly today gave the school the chance to celebrate the success of many pupils. Music plays a big part in the life of the school and pupils. This is evident in how pupils come together to make music and through the large number of pupils who have music lessons with our very supportive team of peripatetic teachers. This Wednesday we had a wonderful music assembly to celebrate Benjamin Britten‘s work and we heard a large number of primary pupils singing in the choir with tremendous enthusiasm and enjoyment as well as skill! All at the school also sang with gusto the school song ‘Vivat Haileyburian’, which was repeated at the assembly this morning and will play an increasing role in the life of the school. We also continued with key stage one and two music concerts in which we saw many talented performers from age five upwards performing with confidence and ability on a variety of instruments. In recognition of successful work two of our Olympiad Maths teachers, Alexey Konanykhin and Vladimir Zhuk were presented this week with a Diploma being the best team teachers in a recent international competition from the Ministry of Education and Science, Scientific and Practical Centre “Daryn” for the Kazakhstani Association of Mathematical Teachers. One of our Haileybury graduates from last year Val Kim has been presented with an award for a dolls house she made as part of her A ‘level Art studies, which has been given to the orphanage where she was a volunteer and undertook service. Two sixth form pupils Artyom Tiunelis and Dinmukhamed Mailbay, who are off to interview at Cambridge Robinson College and Churchill College respectively to read computer science, are preparing well for the forthcoming tests and interviews at the beginning of December and we wish them every success. Next week of course the school is closed for the National Holiday on Friday 1st December. May I wish you and your families a lovely national holiday weekend. Kind regards,

Ms Lynne Oldfield Headmistress

Haileybury Almaty English Olympiad

On Friday, November 17 the school hosted the final two rounds of the 2017 English Olympiad. For the third consecutive year, this contest has been held by Haileybury Almaty and is open for Year 8, Year 9 and Year 10 pupils from all Almaty schools. This year over 350 people from 70 schools took part in round one, which was held online from November 6-8. After a rigorous and highly competitive first round, 70 candidates from 30 schools were invited to Haileybury to participate in the final rounds. In the second and third rounds, the students showed their skills in written and oral examinations. The quality of this year’s candidates was excellent, with many finalists demonstrating excellent English skills in their writing and the 32 candidates invited to participate in the final round impressed the jury members with their creative and thoughtful participation in the speaking assessment. Many departments of the school were involved during the Olympiad finals: the science department hosted 2 sessions in the Chemistry lab during which our guests could take part in exciting experiments; the music department arranged a musical performance (featuring our Secondary school band); the EAL staff held a reflective session in which candidates could write about their experience at Haileybury during the Olympiad; and the admissions officer held a short session to explain in detail all our school has to offer. But most importantly, our Sixth Form students were crucial to the success of the day: during the break between rounds they chaperoned all the candidates to lunch, took them on a tour of the school and then helped supervise and translate for the science department during the science experiments. Many also came to cheer on ‘’their’’ candidates during the awards ceremony – they were outstanding ambassadors for our school! The day ended with the awards ceremony, where the 6 best candidates in each year were awarded with medals, certificates and prizes. All of the second and third round participants and their teachers also received certificates and small gifts. The most successful candidate may have scholarship opportunities and all participants have been invited to accept another challenge: the CAT4 test, perhaps opening the way for scholarship consideration.

We would like to thank the English faculty and all the staff that contributed their time and expertise to the day for all their hard work in making this year’s Olympiad the biggest and most successful to date! Here are comments about the Haileybury Olympiad experience from some of this year’s participants: “It was a great experience for me for being on Olympiad in such wonderful school. That's why it was a big honor for me to be nominated to the first place among Grade 10 students. I realized that I'm capable of more than I expected. So thank you for holding this Olympiad.” Malika Koshmukhambetova, school #23. "The Haileybury Almaty English Olympiad is the most interesting Olympiad I ever participated. Since every round had unique and entertaining tasks, it was an unforgettable experience for me. I believe that every student who is learning English ought to take part in this Olympiad to have an insight of how fascinating it is. Thanks to Haileybury school for that." Sultanali Nurmanuly, school NIS PMD “I am so grateful for all people who arranged this Olympiad. It was a great opportunity to take part in it and to compete with other advanced contenders. It was an incredible chance to check my knowledge and to get unique experience in my life, which will help me to improve my English. With lots of love,” Aelina Bissenova, school #165 “I would like to say thank you for making this contest! I am very glad I participated in it. I loved it very much.” Timur Umbetbayev, school #38 Maths Olympiad On November 20, 2017 we were delighted to take part in another Online Olympiad “Year 5-6 Internet Roundabout in Maths” (corresponds to Y6-8 at Haileybury Almaty), where we faced 371 competing teams from Russia, Kazakhstan, Belarus and Moldova. Haileybury Almaty entered 5 Olympiad squads (29 pupils). Haileybury Almaty team 2 made up of Buravlyova Arina, Martysheva Alikseniia, Maratova Alua, Belovich Alexandra, Kanasheva Amelie, and Nurbekova Kamila scored 55 points and took the 14th place out of 371 teams. Although the final results of the Olympiad have not yet been finalized, traditionally around 40 first teams are declared winners. That makes it more likely for Haileybury Almaty 2 to be awarded the winners’ status.

First Aid Training for Staff For four days from Thursday 16th November our teachers were involved in a First Aid training. First Aid Academy (@1staidacademy) were in school to provide two high quality courses. First Aid in the Workplace and Outdoor First Aid. In order to keep our community safe we have ensured staff are trained

in both indoor and Mountain First Aid. This will support the medical team in their new facilities in school and also on trips such as the Snow Sports CCA and Duke of Edinburgh Expeditions. During Friday and Saturday last week staff were put through their paces with a two day course on Outdoor Mountain First Aid, followed by an examination. All of our staff did exceptionally well and all scored high marks in the exam. As part of the course staff had to know what to do in certain extreme mountain conditions and so part of our course was done in the mountains. Whilst in the mountains staff were put into a number of different scenarios in which they had to issue first aid. A cold yet rewarding experience! We wish to thank Alan Sherliker and First Aid Academy for providing us with a superb experience and we hope to have more staff take these courses next year!

PE Uniform The PE kit is back in stock in the school shop, and has all the necessary sizes. All pupils should now be in the correct PE kit for their lessons! Thank you for your continued support.

Primary School News This week I was again left feeling amazed by the musical talents of our children. Not only were the KS1 and Year 5 concerts full of extremely talented pupils but Mr. Kolosov also led a tremendous whole school assembly on Wednesday where Year 4 and Year 6 pupils showcased their talents through the work of Benjamin Britten. Now to see if the whole school can continue to improve their rendition of the school song, Vivat Haileyburia! There is still lots of hard work and learning to do this term. Remember to try your best and impress your teachers, especially as they are writing your school reports now. There is also still a lot to look forward to this term. Key Stage 2 have a Crazy Hair disco next week and it is not long until the Primary end of term certificate assembly with another special performance directed by Mr. Clarke to look forward to. After that we will still have time for the Talent Show and the Winter Festival. What a busy school we are! Mr. Matthew Aston, Head of Primary

Crazy Hair Disco Key Stage 2 children are invited to a Crazy Hair Disco on Thursday 30th November. This disco will take place in the Drama Studio from 4 – 5pm for Year 3 and 4 and 5.30 – 7pm for Years 5 and 6. Some teachers will be DJing and leading the fun games and other teachers will be selling snacks and drinks. The tickets will cost 1000 Tenge and will be on sale in the Primary Atrium at play time and after school from Friday 24th November. Students also need to bring in money for the snacks and drinks that will be on sale during the event. Money from the ticket and refreshment sales will be given to our school in Cambodia and it will also buy Winter Festival presents for children in local hospitals in Almaty.

This girl has shown herself to be a versatile and purposeful pupil. This week her skills and personality has really seen it all coming together, academically and socially. She is a powerhouse of energy and enthusiasm, where there is a problem, she can make it right. There is seemingly nothing she can’t do, solve devious maths problems, plan an ambitious experiment, catch the moon in her hand or leap across oceans. Keep going Luiza!

When this boy arrived in school he found life very challenging, as Haileybury was very different from what he was used to. He knows he has improved enormously but he says: “You haven’t seen the best of me yet, I have got more in me!” I love this courageous and resilient attitude, Zaki!

This young man has so much ability that he can easily light up the sky like a flame, he works hard at all times and demonstrates Haileybury Habits in all activities. Secondary School News The main focus in the secondary school over the last week has been on assessment. Key Stage 3 will have started to receive their Key Assessment results from last week’s tests and Key Stage 4 and 5 have been sitting their Key Assessment 2 papers in all IGCSE and A level subjects this week. The Key Assessments are of critical importance to the academic programme at Haileybury Almaty. They are held at regular intervals throughout the exam courses and are marked to examination board standards. This allows us to have a clear and accurate picture of pupils’ progress and to coordinate appropriate support for any pupils who may have dipped below expectations in any particular area. Assessment results will be fed back to parents in the full school reports, which will be issued in the last week of term. Mr Rhys Thomas, Head of Secondary

Year 8-9 workshop on the banking system and financial literacy On Monday 20th November, representatives of Alfa Bank delivered a presentation / workshop to Year 8-9 pupils. This is part of the Alfa-Heir programme which has been successfully delivered to state and private schools in Kazakhstan. The purpose of the programme is to help pupils develop their financial literacy which is essential for their future economic well-being. Pupils were given a brief history of how the banking system developed. They then got into groups and designed a logo, motto and general information about an imaginary bank they would want to set up. Our guests were very impressed by how many of our pupils are very informed about the banking system, how their imagined bank could be marketed and their responses to some tough questions about the plans that they had come up with. The Personal, Social, Health and Economic lessons and workshops provided to Haileybury Almaty pupils, from Year 1 to Year 13, are important in helping them to develop into well-informed and independent individuals who can achieve success, in an increasingly complex world, and who value the importance of contributing to society.

Sixth Form News The Sixth Form students have been studying and revising hard this week for their Key Assessments. Thursday 23rd November In PSHE this week the Year 13 students had a session on ''How to cope away from home''. We covered topics such as doing the laundry, cooking, health and safety in the kitchen, food shopping on a budget, putting together a meal, the importance of budgeting, etc. The students completed a series of challenges. This proved to be quite entertaining. Do encourage your sons and daughters to develop those skills early on. Friday 24th November In PSHE this week the Year 12 students had a lesson on the topic of ''Mental Health and Wellbeing''. We hope this session reminded students about the importance of looking after their mental health at school, at university and in their future life and to seek help. Ms Grignard, Teacher of French
