Successful HOliday Bazaar The CLO Office would like to thank everyone for a successful holiday bazaar. We had about 40 vendors and over 250 shoppers! The annual shopping extravaganza raised over 17,000 shekels for the CLO office, which will go towards upcoming community events and activities. We would like to give a huge shout out to Bazaar Chairwoman, Elise Comeau! Her endless hours coordinating with the school, registering the vendors, marketing the event and overall just keeping everything organized contributed largely to the wonderful event. Good-bye and Good Luck!

We bid a fond farewell to Bob Posner today as he retires from his position as CLO Tel Aviv. Perhaps one of the most wellknown personalities in the mission community (aside from the Ambassador and DCM of course!), Bob has been serving Mission Tel Aviv since October 2009. Bob will continue to be working at the Embassy helping out in the mail room. On May 19 he embarks on his next big adventure in the Washington DC area. In honor of Bob, we’ll be serving up pastries, coffee, tea and other goodies at the Cafeteria on Friday morning, December 2 from 8:30-10 a.m. Please stop by to wish him well. S till

The Green Israel Tour: Sunday December 11 Join us for an interesting outing to better understand the importance of trees and natural resources in the Holy Land. Keren Keyemeth LeYisroel (KKL) Jewish National Fund (JNF) is the group that has been planting trees and helping to conserve and optimize natural resources throughout Israel. The KKL-JNF is providing a bus and guide to visit a tree bank, tree nursery, water recycling, desert forestry zone and river rehabilitation efforts near Be’er Sheva. Lunch will be cooked by Moroccan women who have a small catering business. The bus pickup will be from Sharon Square in Herzliya at 08:00 and will return about 17:00. Bring water, snacks, comfortable walking shoes and appropriate clothing in case of rain. Cost is 100 NIS for lunch. You are welcome to bring a bag lunch if you desire. Diplomacy Book Club

New BAby Congrats!!

Maytal Raymond-Bossem (Cons) gave birth to Amit, a girl, on October 26 at 6 a.m. at Hadassah Ein Kerem in Jerusalem. Hearty congratulations go out to Maytal, her husband Ori and Amit’s big sister, Lia, aged three.

Our next meeting will be on December 1, when Matt will lead the discussion on The Israel Lobby and U.S. Foreign Policy by John Mearsheimer and Stephen Walt. This book has generated a lot of controversy since it came out in 2007, and it, along with its authors, are still referenced quite often in our line of work. Whether you think the authors are right or wrong, the subject is fascinating and I’m sure we’ll have a great discussion. Then on January 5, Charlie will lead the discussion on Start-up Nation: The Story of Israel’s Economic Miracle by Dan Senor and Saul Singer. The Ambassador recommends this book to many people; it’s a great way to learn more about Israel’s economic successes and I think it will be an interesting follow-up to our December title. For all of our meetings, feel free to join us if you’re interested in the subject, whether you’ve had the chance to read the book or not. 3

AFSA College Scholarship Applications Now Available The American Foreign Service Association (AFSA) is offering academic merit and art merit awards as well as renewable need-based financial aid scholarships for children of Foreign Service employees. At least one parent needs to be a member of either AFSA or the Associates of the American Foreign Service Worldwide (AAFSW) to be eligible to receive an academic/art merit award; however, there is no AFSA membership requirement to receive a need-based financial aid scholarship and high-school seniors as well as college undergraduates may apply. Combined Federal Campaign (CFC) Ends December 15 The Combined Federal Campaign (CFC) enables you to improve the quality of people’s lives at home and abroad. New Programs at Tel AVIV University The department of Hebrew Culture Studies of Tel Aviv University is pleased to announce the opening of the application for the 2012-2013 MA program in Jewish Studies and the establishment of a new intensive six-week summer school in rabbinic literature, both of these programs tailored for English speaking students. The one-year MA program offers a series of comprehensive encounters with the classical texts of Jewish cultures covering a wide range of periods, methodologies, and scholarly interests, while maintaining the highest standards of academic excellence.

The summer school aims to enhance textual, linguistic and philological skills for advanced students of Jewish and Religious studies interested in acquiring reading skills in Talmud and Midrash.
