In Focus: Social Initiatives @ SIESCOMS By Chinmay Bhide SIESCOMS is traditionally known for various social activities it conducts in the campus and also beyond the campus by collaborating with various NGOs. The Sahyog committee along with the internal events committee organizes several events to expose and sensitize students of SIESCOMS on the various social issues and responsibilities apart from inculcating managerial and leadership skills. This academic year, Sahyog committee flagged off its events on 6th August by celebrating the “World Organ Donation Day”. Members of Sahayog committee organized street plays at various places in the SIES, Nerul campus to spread awareness about organ donation among the youth in the college. Several creative posters depicting the importance of organ donation were also handmade by the Sahyog committee. Later on 17th August a seminar was held on the importance of Organ donation where the speakers from Global Hospital under the guidance of ZTCC (Zonal Transplant Coordination Centre) were invited to give students various details about the organ donation and cleared the myths about the same. Large number of students participated in the awareness program and many of them pledged to donate their organs.

The Internal events committee organized th Independence Day celebrations on 15 August. Students and faculty displayed great national pride and enthusiastically participated in various activities organized as a part of the celebrations. Sahyog committee took this opportunity to spread awareness about the flag code as laid down by the Constitution of India and the importance of respecting the Tri Color. Also the students and faculty alike were requested to collect any flag that is thrown away on roads or littered away and deposit the same in a flag box kept at the entrance of the college. The collected flags were disposed of as per the guidelines of the Flag code of India.

The Sahyog committee adopted a novel way of spreading awareness about various social issues and crimes that have been plaguing India by organizing “Nukkad Natak” on 23rd August. Groups of students representing various courses performed skits on the theme. The skits enacted by students’ highlighted diverse issues ranging from female foeticide to crimes against women

and communal riots. The MCA team bagged the first prize for the most innovative street play. The street plays are usually done without the assistance of a mike and it was no different here too, but students rose to this challenge and still conveyed the message loudly and clearly to the audience.

Panel Discussion @ SIESCOMS - Ashwin Shashidharan The newly launched Centre for Excellence in HealthCare [CEHC] at SIESCOMS organized a panel discussion on “Current Practices in Pharmaceutical Product Management- Critical success factors” on 14th September 2013.

The panelists gave insights into the current market trends. The discussion threw light on the skill sets that product managers should have which would help them survive the challenges in the corporate world. The session highlighted the importance of differentiation and innovation. The panel discussion concluded with a question & answer session. Apart from SIESCOMS,

As per Prof Suniel Deshpande, who heads the CEHC at SIESCOMS, CEHC has been set-up to support and address the unique and complex challenges that are characteristic to the Pharmaceutical and Biotechnology industry; designing, developing and delivering Management Development Programs [MDPs], and undertaking consulting & market research activities for the Pharmaceutical & Biotechnology industry. CEHC has a core panel of expert professionals from the healthcare

3 using the materials provided. The event tested the creativity of the participants. Participating teams exhibited great creativity and produced wonderful and attractive designs. Wind Chime created by the group from PG (A) st bagged the 1 prize. It depicted the problems faced by women in the Indian Society. Second Prize went to the Lamp created by students of PG (A). The event was very successful and saw active participation from the students. The Judges appreciated the creativity of the students and congratulated the innovation committee for organizing the event. THE EDITORIAL TEAM

Renovations in Innovation - Saniya Rumani industry.

Leading lights from the Pharmacy / Biotech industry Mr Ashok Kumar Bhattacharya (Business Unit DirectorTakeda Pharmaceuticals), Mr K N Chandrasekaran (an independent Pharmaceutical consultant), Ms Mala Raj (Pharmaceutical consultant) and Mr Shrihari Shidhaye (Director –Sales, Marketing and Business Development at Abbott Healthcare) were invited as expert panelists. The program commenced with a welcome address by Dr A. K. SenGupta, MentorSIESCOMS who elaborated on the healthcare sector, its potential and opportunities available to management graduates in the sector. The panel discussion, which was an interactive session, focused on current practices in pharmaceutical product management. It covered various facets in product management with reference to the pharmaceutical industry like new product introduction, composition of good brand plans, managing the product through various stages of the PLC (Product life cycle), market and competitive intelligence, designing the promotion mix, STP strategies and the like.

SIESCOMS is known for promoting innovation and creativity among its students through various initiatives and activities. The Innovation Committee at SIESCOMS primarily acts as a catalyst in this endeavor of inculcating innovative and creative thinking among students. True to its motto of “Educate, Enrich and Empower”, the Innovation committee undertakes initiatives and organizes events that foster innovation and creativity. One such initiative that has been highly appreciated by one and all is the On-line Informative Session in which an informative “Video link” is sent to all students and faculty each week. These short videos generally depict various happenings around the world in the domain of innovation & creativity and also features thought leaders from around the world. With the objective of providing an opportunity to students for experimenting with and displaying their “free-flowing creativity”, the Innovation committee organized an event titled “Renovations in Innovation” on 27th September 2013. In this, participating student teams were provided with some material like paper plates, straws, threads, plastic glasses, cello tapes etc. The task was to make something innovative
