CLAHRC BITE
Brokering Innovation Through Evidence Collaboration for Leadership in Applied Health Research and Care
BITE 9 March 2013
A bite-sized summary of a project within CLAHRC for South Yorkshire The Voice of Dementia The ‘Voice of Dementia’ is a moving film with moments of laughter, sadness and inspiration. It shows people with dementia talking about their lives, their diagnosis and the importance of being listened to. The film has been made to promote greater awareness of the need to involve and listen to people with dementia in making choices and decisions about their lives and the support and services that they want. The film is an outcome from a larger project about Involving People with Dementia in Service Improvement and Planning hosted by the CLAHRC Translating Knowledge into Action (TK2A) theme.
The Voice of Dementia The idea for the Voice of Dementia was conceived through conversations with people with dementia, as part of the Involving People with Dementia project. We ask that the film will be shown to a range of audiences including: people with dementia, family carers/friends, health and social care staff and voluntary/charitable organisations. The people with dementia who appear in the film were delighted to have the opportunity to ‘have a say’. They feel that there are too few opportunities for their views and opinions to be listened to by health and social care services. As one person in the film said: “The more people that get together and feed in the main benefits that they’ve identified then you multiply that by ten and you have a pretty clear picture as to what the problems are … How can the NHS make use of that information to improve services for people with Alzheimers?” For more information about the project contact Dr Jane McKeown
