Health Inequalities in South Yorkshire The Health Inequalities Theme of the South Yorkshire CLAHRC has spent five years investing in, and leading, projects which seek to understand and act against the differing and unequal health issues facing our region’s population. From evaluating a breastfeeding peer support service in Barnsley to researching the barriers to cardiac care amongst the South Asian community, a wide range of projects have brought insights into ways in which our health services can address health inequalities.

Key messages The Health Inequalities theme has brought together a Casebook with a number of key messages for commissioners and providers: • Commissioners need to consider how they will be able to appraise any new commissioning activity for its equity. • Providers need to be proactive and get involved in research and evaluation. It doesn’t need to be costly or create an unnecessary burden to churn out endless data: structure your information collection around what is already there.

About CLAHRC for South Yorkshire There are nine CLAHRCs in England. Our remit is to undertake applied research and implementation activities, and to build capacity within our partner organisations. CLAHRC for South Yorkshire is a partnership between universities, the NHS, other NIHR initiatives, patients, charities and industries.
