Summer can be a busy time in these beautiful places! • Make sure you are familiar with your travel and accommodation provider’s policies regarding check in times, identification required at check in, baggage limits, and minors travelling alone. • Always confirm schedules directly and stay up to date with travel providers via their website or by phone closer to the departure date. Most state that schedules are subject to change without notice! • If you haven’t signed up for the Travel Plans Loop (highly recommended) and would like to now, we will be providing periodic updates as new trainees sign up so please let us know right away!
SKIDEGATE, HAIDA GWAII Over the past few years SALTS trainees have explored the amazing Haida Gwaii archipelago on trips that started and ended in Port Hardy or Prince Rupert. In order to provide more time to take in the spectacular sights, significant history, and rich culture of these “Islands of the People” we are pleased to be offering this new trip, begin and ending at the friendly port of Skidegate. We expect that most trainees who are not residents of Haida Gwaii will be arriving at Sandspit Airport (YZP) on the August 10th morning Air Canada flight and depart on the August 19th afternoon flight after disembarking. Trainees who have signed up for the Travel Plans Loop email list will have a chance to connect prior to meeting at the Vancouver airport where there will be 20-30 other SALTS trainees boarding the flight to Haida Gwaii. The Eagle Transit airport shuttle bus meets each scheduled Air Canada flight into Sandspit Airport and transports passengers onto the Alliford Bay – Skidegate ferry for the short crossing to Skidegate Landing where the Pacific Grace will be moored, right beside the ferry dock. SALTS has made a group reservation for the shuttle, but the shuttle fee, which includes the cost of the ferry, is the responsibility of the trainee and we recommend that it be pre-paid to Eagle Transit. Please see the Eagle Transit website for details. Departing on August 19th will be the same route in reverse, with the Pacific Grace docking beside the ferry terminal where trainees can board the shuttle bus to the Sandspit Airport for the 3:20pm Air Canada flight. Of course, it will be a very different group, reveling in shared memories and new friendships as they board that flight home! …/2
- Page 2 HAIDA GWAII TRANSPORTATION Air Canada – 1-888-247-2262 www.aircanada.com – typically provides at least two scheduled arrivals and departures to Sandspit Airport (YZP) each day through Vancouver International Airport (YVR). We strongly recommend getting the earlies flight. If there is no way for you to be on that flight, it will still be possible to join the ship, but no one wants to miss out on the excitement of those first few hours! Eagle Transit - 1-877-747-4461 www.eagletransit.net – provides many transportation services throughout the Haida Gwaii region. B.C. Ferries – www.bcferries.com Inside Passage-Haida Gwaii - provides several crossings per week between Skidegate and Prince Rupert, however, the currently posted summer schedule does not indicate any crossings that would be convenient for our Trip 4 trainees. Of course, this might be a terrific, land based adventure for some of our older trainees, but would require very careful planning and overnight accommodation. Pacific Coastal Airways – www.pacificcoastal.com - provides at least one flight per day (weather permitting) to the Village of Massett, a 115km drive north of Skidegate. Eagle Transit also offers transport to and from Masset. Pacific Coastal Airlines services several coastal areas, connecting in through the Vancouver International Airport (YVR) South Terminal. Adventurous, mature trainees and family members who are considering taking advantage this opportunity to visit the amazing Haida Gwaii region and wave from the dock (great excuse!) can find further information on accommodations, car rentals and other exploration options at:
