Trends 5, Test 5 (Unit 5) Name: _______________________________________ Date: _________________ 1 Scan the text quickly to find the information below. (5 points) Forget about the low calorie diet – it seems that the latest diet to gain popularity is the GI diet. GI stands for Glycemic Index and refers to the ranking of carbohydrates between 0 and 100, depending on how quickly blood sugar levels are raised after eating them. Foods that have a high GI ranking, such as white bread and potatoes, are quickly digested and cause dramatic fluctuations in blood sugar levels. Those that have a low GI ranking, such as lentils and yogurt, are digested slowly and keep blood sugar levels more stable. Foods with a low GI are therefore better for us. The Glycemic Index was originally created to help diabetics control their blood sugar levels through their diet, and a low GI diet has been proven to improve the symptoms of diabetes. Recent studies indicate that it can also help prevent coronary heart disease. But the GI diet is not without criticism. Many claim that it is oversimplified and that other factors have to be taken into account, such as the overall nutritional value of a particular food. Take the example of ice cream and watermelon. Ice cream has a low GI ranking, while watermelon has a high GI ranking. Under the GI diet, therefore, ice cream would be a better food than watermelon. But it doesn’t take an expert to realize that a watermelon is nutritionally superior in terms of vitamins and minerals. Despite these criticisms, however, many health experts believe that a low GI diet is better than many other diets, as long as people look at the nutritional value of the food, as well as the GI ranking.
