1 The Art of Skillful Soccer: Turning the Advantage
Objective: Improve Turning Techniques to Achieve Attacking Advantage
S We will introduce three simple and effective turning methods and encourage players to correctly apply each in a competitive environment. Turning Examples A-Sell the Dummy: When the challenging defender is too close the attacker will be encouraged to “dummy” the ball and let it pass into the space behind the opponent. B-Turn Opposite the Challenge: As the defender moves in to regain possession, the attacker will rotate in the direction opposite the challenge of the defensive player. The turn should be tight and completed as quickly as possible to gain full advantage and prevent defensive recovery. C-Take Opponent Inside: Drag the opponent inside to create space in which to turn. The Cruyff Turn or Outside of Foot Hook will be ideal examples.
Find Your Favorite Turn: Find someone who is performing correctly and effectively. In essence, find someone with an amazing move and try to reproduce the positive results. Description The activity will commence with simultaneous service from the red support player (S1-S2) to their respective partner (A-B); and from the blue support players (T1-T2) to their respective blue partners (A-B). The objective of the receiving player is to turn efficiently and pass to the support player positioned at the opposite end (T1-T2 and S1S2, respectively). Initially, this task will be achieved without pressure, but incremental pressure will be applied as greater success is achieved. 1v1 Progression: The objective of the possession player is to pass to the opposite colored target player (score one point) positioned at the end of the field (T1-T2 for red and S1-S2 for blue). The game remains live until a point is scored or the ball leaves the field. Upon a regained possession the players will immediately transition from attack to defense, as in a real match. The game will restart with a service from the target player who received the ball or the end player (alternate service-less confusion) opposite the team last touching the ball out of play.

2 The Art of Skillful Soccer: Turning the Advantage
Objective: Competitive Application of Turning Techniques
S Organisation: 2 Red v 2 Blue inside a 24x36 yard playing area. 2 Red and 2 Blue target/server players are positioned on opposite ends of the field (as diagrammed). Spare balls are placed near the target/server players to facilitate continuous play. Description The game will start with a pass from a red server to either interior teammate. The attacking duo will score one point for a turn and an accurate pass to the feet of an opposite colored target player. Upon receiving the target player will quickly transfer the ball to his/her service colleague. This will afford interior players the time to better position for attack or defense. The game is active until a point has been scored or the ball leaves the field. The game will always be restarted with a pass from a server. The team scored upon or the one opposite of the team touching the ball out of play will restart the game. After sixty seconds the interior and exterior teammates will exchange roles. Activity Progression: The four red attacking players will score one point for a successful turn and a completed pass to the feet of either opposite colored target player. Two blue interior defenders will complicate issues by applying high intensity pressure in attempt to regain possession. When possession is regained, the ball is immediately passed to a like colored target/service player who will quickly transfers the ball to his/her service colleague. Thereafter, the new possession team will attack with four and the opposition defend with two. Eventually, the game will transition into a four v four match with each team attempting to score on either of two small end line goals. Initially, a player of the possession team must successfully complete a turn before his/her team may attack goal. When a measure of success has been achieved the teams will play freely without restriction.

3 The Art of Skillful Soccer: Turning the Advantage
Objective: Match Application of Turning Techniques
S Organisation: 4 Red v 4 Blue inside a 24x48 yard playing area. Spare balls placed near server who is positioned outside of the field at the midfield stripe (as diagrammed). Description The red team will attack the red goal and the blue team will attack the blue goal. The game will begin with a pass from the server to any of the four red players. The objective of the attacking team is to perform a turn, attack the end zone (red attack “A” and blue attack “B”) and complete a quick strike on goal. The attacking team may not, however, enter the zone until a turn has been successfully completed. One point is awarded for each goal. The game will be restarted by the server following a goal or whenever the ball has left the field. Activity Progression: Free play to goal without restriction. The coach must remain focused on the topic and encourage players to turn or show great enthusiasm whenever a turn is successfully completed.
