Acetaminophen (Tylenol) and Ibuprofen (Motrin) Tylenol Extra Strength (acetaminophen): 500mg tablets. Take 2 tablets every 8 hours as needed to manage fever/pain. Can overlap with Motrin. DO NOT take more than 3000mg (6 tablets) in a 24 hour period! Motrin (ibuprofen): 200mg tablets. Take 2, 3, or 4 tablets by mouth every 8 hours as needed to manage fever/pain. Take with food to decrease stomach upset. Can overlap with Tylenol. DO NOT take more than 2400mg (12 tablets) in a 24 period! If taking acetaminophen or ibuprofen in combination with other medications, make sure to check labels for acetaminophen/ibuprofen content to ensure that you don’t exceed maximum daily amount (3,000mg of acetaminophen/24hr or 2,400mg ibuprofen/24hr) Both Acetaminophen and Ibuprofen and are useful for soothing sore throats and fighting fevers. Acetaminophen is better for pain associated with headache and arthritis. Ibuprofen is more useful for menstrual cramps, sinusitis, backache, muscle soreness, earache and toothache. To minimize risk and maximize benefits, try alternating between acetaminophen and ibuprofen. Always take the smallest effective dose for the shortest amount of time. Stop taking acetaminophen or ibuprofen or any other medicine immediately and seek help, call 911, if you experience an allergic reaction. This may affect your skin (rash, hives, itching, redness, blistering, peeling) or your airways (wheezing, tight chest and throat, difficulty breathing or speaking), or make your face, lips, mouth, tongue or throat swell.
