Vestavia Hills City Schools Bring Your Own Device Guidelines Vestavia Hills City Schools is committed to aiding students and staff in creating a 21st century learning environment. We are piloting a new program, “Bring Your Own Devices,” or BYOD. For purposes of BYOD, “Devices” are personally owned wireless portable electronic equipment used for instructional purposes. Students in pilot classrooms may be allowed but not be required to bring and use personal, portable, electronic devices starting at the beginning of the 2012- 2013 school year. In order to comply with Federal regulations, all student owned devices will be subject to Internet filtering policies. Personal electronic devices used on school grounds are subject to all items covered in these guidelines and the JTA/IFABC Computers, Internet and Network Resources Acceptable Use Policy, and the Student Code of Conduct. SPECIFICATIONS A. Devices must access the Internet via the VHCS student wireless network. B. These devices must be capable of accessing the Internet using the district student wireless network only. 3G, 4G, or LTE access will not be allowed while in school. C. All Windows-based laptops or tablets are required to have some form of antivirus software enabled and will be scanned automatically for this software. Devices without up to date antivirus software will not be able to connect to the student wireless network. D. The permission for such personal devices to be brought to school will be at the discretion of the local school administration. USAGE A. Personal devices are only to be used in the classroom for educational purposes at the discretion of the school administration and/or teacher. B. Personal devices may not be used to record, transmit or post photographic images or video of a person, or persons on campus during school activities and/or hours unless assigned by the teacher as allowed by the JTA/IFABC Computers, Internet and Network Resources Acceptable Use Policy. C. The school district may collect and examine any personal device at any time for the purpose of enforcing the terms of this agreement, investigating student discipline issues, or for any other school-related purpose.

D. Students who do not have access to personal devices will be provided with an alternative way of completing the assignment, or a district owned device may be provided based on availability. E. In order to comply with Federal regulations, all student owned devices will be subject to the district Internet filtering policies while at school. MAINTENANCE/ACCOUNTABILITY A. Students take full responsibility for personal devices at all times. The school or district assumes no responsibility for personal devices. In the event a device is lost, damaged, or stolen, limited time or resources will be spent trying to locate the item. B. Each student is responsible for his/her own personal device: set-up, maintenance, and charging. C. Students are prohibited from loaning, trading, or selling these items to other students on district property, including school buses. D. District employees will not diagnose, troubleshoot, or repair a student’s personal device.
