People of the Soil: Imperial Education, Ethnology, and Social Engineering in Colonial British Malaya 1900-1939 From 1900 to 1939, the British colonial government supported educational policies aimed at keeping the Malay people in their “traditional” roles as farmers, fisherman, mothers, and handicraft makers. Contemporary ethnology, that characterized the Malays as people living in a simple world of ancient traditions, was used to support these attempts to stifle Malay desires for social mobility. Dr. Schauer’s project examines how these ethnological characterizations were applied directly to policies relating to Malay vocational education. The goal of these policies was to cultivate a new class of Malay men and women, who had loyalty to both the British government and the Malay Sultan, and used modern practices in their “traditional” work and domestic lives.
