‘Owl Prowl’ events at Wehr Nature Center "Owl Prowl," a night out with the owls, will be led by a Wehr Nature Center naturalist on several evenings in January, at 9701 W. Archdiocese of Milwaukee Catholic Schools enrollment increases
Owls will be featured in upcoming presentation at the Wehr Nature Center.
Catholic schools in the Archdiocese of Milwaukee are reporting a combined enrollment increase for the second time in three years according to enrollment data recently released. This news comes as Catholic schools across the archdiocese gear up for the annual Catholic Schools Week celebrations. “Our mission as leaders of the 113 Catholic schools in the 10 counties of the Archdiocese of Milwaukee is to offer high quality Catholic education that is affordable and accessible to all, said Superintendent of Catholic Schools, Dr. Kathleen Cepelka. It’s encouraging to witness the ongoing growth of our schools, to build new models that will sustain them into the future, and to collaborate with so many groups and individuals to enable their continued success.” Catholic Schools Week, Jan. 26-Feb. 1, 2014, recognizes the educational excellence provided by the nation’s 6,685 Catholic elementary and secondary schools. Over 2 million students attend Catholic schools in the United States. In southeastern Wisconsin, 99 elementary and 14 secondary Catholic schools educate more than 31,000 students. This year’s Catholic Schools Week theme is “Catholic Schools–Communities of Faith, Knowledge and Service.” The theme reflects what sets Catholic schools apart from other educational institutions in that faith and service are integral to the educational experience. Numerous activities are planned during Catholic Schools Week, including Masses with Archbishop Jerome E. Listecki and Auxiliary Bishop Donald J. Hying: Archbishop Listecki: • Jan. 27, 8 a.m. Mass at Christ King Parish, Wauwatosa • Jan. 28, 5:30 p.m. Archbishop’s Catholic Schools Dinner, Marquette University, Alumni Memorial Union Ballroom • Jan. 30, 9 a.m. Mass at the Basilica of St. Josaphat with St. Anthony

Comfort Keepers enhances independence and well being Michael was diagnosed with polio at a young age. He also has diabetes and gout and needs a walker to get around. With help from his caregiver, Jenean, from Comfort Keepers, he continues to be a very independent person. Michael needed some additional help to remain independent after undergoing spinal surgery. In 2007, he called Comfort Keepers for assistance with homemaking services, such as meal preparation, housekeeping, laundry and grocery shopping. When Michael is able and weather permitting, he enjoys going shopping with Jenean. They have become great friends -- the rapport is evident in the way they interact with each other. Comfort Keepers is very flexible, so when Michael asks for extra help with something, Jenean is willing and happy to help.

Skylight Music Theatre heats up Cabot Stage with ‘In the Heights’ Skylight Music Theatre brings the energetic, Spanish-infused and Pulitzer-prize nominated musical “In the Heights” to the Cabot Theatre at the Broadway Theatre Center, 158 N. Broadway, Milwaukee, running Jan. 31 through Feb. 23. The 2008 Tony and Grammy Award-winning musical “is a story about family, cultural roots, personal achievement and the search for a new place in the world that the characters can call home,” said director Ragnar Conde.
Written by Quiara Algería Hudes, with music and lyrics by Lin-Manuel Miranda, “In the Heights” has been nominated for 13 Tony Awards winning Best Musical, Best Original Score, Best Choreography and Best Orchestrations. In the Heights also stands out as a Broadway show for having one of the largest Latino casts ever called for. Skylight will feature locals Rána Roman, David Flores and Erika Wade, among others. Dear Dr Winter: My boyfriend just got 19 extractions and immediate dentures, but he has a very obvious overbite with the new dentures. I was just wondering if this could be due to the initial swelling from the extractions or is he stuck looking like this? He looks very unnatural and his lip sticks out. Any advice you give would be appreciated. Dear Melissa, these are great questions and should be answered by his dentist and surgeon. I don't know if the denture was supposed to remove the overbite he originally had or not. Sometimes the surgeon or surgical dentist will remove more bone in the upper jaw so the denture and teeth can be brought back into a more normal bite, called a Class 1 bite arrangement. As they are immediate dentures they are always made before the teeth are removed so there is some guess-work involved as to where to place the teeth. That is often why dentists will remove back teeth first, allow for healing to occur then make the immediate dentures. This will allow them to set up the back teeth and take an accurate relation between the two jaws to cut down on cosmetic and bite related problems. Then the dentists will remove the front teeth and deliver the denture. This process will decrease the guess-work and allow the laboratory to only remove and set a few teeth as opposed to guessing the positions of an entire arch of teeth at one time. This will also result in a better fit as the back gum tissue will have healed and the denture will fit more accurately on the healed tissue. Either way, have your boyfriend see his dentist to evaluate the position of the teeth and the swelling. It is important to know if they placed bonegrafting material in his tooth sockets. This will help prevent bone loss during the first year after teeth are extracted and allow for easier implant placement. People lose 40-60% of the width and height of their remaining bone in the first year
Drs. Richard and Bruce Winter after teeth are removed! So performing grafting is a valuable way to preserve the bone for up to a year while he is deciding if he would like to upgrade to dental implants. Dental implants will greatly improve his chewing and get rid of the plastic in the roof of his mouth. Dentures need to be relined or remade every 3-5 years forever! So I would recommend an implant consultation before the remaining bone erodes and it becomes more difficult to place implants in the future. You can see photos and videos of our dentistry at www.winterdental.com where you can also read about Upgradeable Dentistry(under Publications) and how we can improve your boyfriend’s chewing and function at a pace you can afford. We welcome our readers to visit our websites and call us for a consultation or comprehensive examination at 414-464-9021. The right person for the job By Tresa Erickson You just got engaged, and already your mind is whirling with ideas for your wedding. Along with setting a date and choosing a venue, you will have to select wedding attendants. As the bride, you

will probably want to start the process with your maid or matron of honor. For some brides, selecting a maid of honor is a no-brainer. There is no one more suited for the job than their one and only sister or their best friend since kindergarten. For others, the decision is much more difficult. They have several sisters and close friends, plus a ton of cousins. In that case, the best course of action is to select a person who can fulfill all of the obligations of the job.

Traditionally, maids of honor have a variety of responsibilities. Some of these may include: • Assisting the bride with much of the wedding planning, including choosing a reception venue, decorations and flowers • Helping the bride shop for a wedding dress and bridesmaid dresses • Addressing the wedding invitations • Making or assembling the wedding favors • Hosting the bridal shower and bachelorette party • Attending the rehearsal and helping out at the rehearsal dinner • Decorating and cleaning up the reception site • Receiving the flowers and handing out all of the bouquets, corsages and boutonnieres • Helping the bride and bridesmaids get dressed and making sure they get where they need to be at the appropriate time

Bridal 2014 Showcase ...Selecting the wedding attendants From page 6 • Holding the bride's bouquet during the ceremony • Witnessing the marriage license • Standing in the receiving line • Taking part in the wedding photos • Toasting the couple at the reception • Dancing with the best man and other guests Depending upon your wishes, the maid of honor may have more or fewer duties to perform. Sit down and decide exactly what you would like your maid of honor to do. Make a list of their duties and a list of potential candidates for the job. Then start comparing the lists. Be honest in your assessment of each candidate on your list. You need a person who not only will be willing to carry out the duties you assign but do them on time. You may love your little sister, but if she is a procrastinator, she may not be the best candidate for the job. Your older sister, on the other hand, might make a better choice because she is so timely. Consider each candidate's personal situation as well. What kind of commit-
ments does she already have? If your older sister is a wife and mother, works full time and heads several committees, she may be too busy to serve as your matron of honor. If she is pregnant, she may be too tired and sick to perform the duties required. If she is going through a difficult divorce, she may not have the energy to devote to you and your wedding. Choose someone who doesn't have as much on her plate to be your maid of honor. If you plan to lean heavily on your maid of honor, make sure you choose someone who lives close enough to you to get the job done. If you live in the Midwest, don't choose a cousin who lives on the coast to be your maid of honor. It will be hard for her to serve as the center of support from so far away. Choose that dependable friend who lives just down the street. Choosing a maid of honor takes time. Don't rush the process, and once you have a found someone and she has agreed to serve as your maid of honor, make sure you communicate your wishes to her. If you want her to take an active

Search on for Wisconsin's Outstanding Senior Volunteer The public is invited to nominate a deserving older adult in their community for his or her outstanding service through the Salute to Senior Service® program. Sponsored by Home Instead, Inc., the franchisor of the Home Instead Senior Care® network, Salute to Senior Service recognizes the invaluable contributions of adults age 65 and older who give at least 15 hours a month of volunteer service to their favorite causes. “Seniors have so much to give and make a positive impact on our communities daily,” said
Kristi Millhiser, vice president of the Home Instead Senior Care office serving Brown, Door, Kewaunee, Outagamie, Calumet, Ozaukee, Washington and Winnebago Counties. “Senior volunteerism not only benefits others, but also helps seniors stay active and socially engaged in their communities ñ important elements of healthy aging.” Members of the community are asked to nominate and vote for these everyday heroes now through March 1, 2014, at SalutetoSeniorService.com. State winners will
be determined by popular vote. A panel of senior care experts will then select a national Salute to Senior Service winner from among the state honorees. Home Instead, Inc. will donate $500 to each of the state winners’ designated and approved nonprofit organizations, and their personal stories will be shared online on the Salute to Senior Service Wall of Fame. In addition, $5,000 will be donated to the national winner's designated and approved nonprofit charity.
To complete and submit an online nomination form for a senior age 65 or older who volunteers at least 15 hours a month, and to view the contest’s official rules, visit SalutetoSeniorService.com. Completed nomination forms can alternatively be mailed to Salute to Senior Service, P.O. Box 285, Bellevue, NE 68005. Seasonal home maintenance checklist can prevent emergency repairs (StatePoint) With a little easy home maintenance throughout the year, you can prevent emergency repairs down the line. Experts recommend posting a task checklist in a convenient location, such as on the refrigerator or a corkboard. "Maintenance is usually a lot simpler than a repair, and a lot more affordable," says Chris Terrill, CEO of HomeAdvisor, a leading website offering resources for home repair and improvement projects. "Keep a checklist handy during the entire year, so you don't forget any timely tasks." Here are six tasks HomeAdvisor recommends not to forget to complete each year: • On a quarterly basis, test your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors. Not only will doing so protect the safety of your family in the event of an emergency, it can also protect your pocketbook. The average national cost of repairing fire and smoke damage is $4,195.
• Twice a year, clean your gutters and downspouts. To prevent damage, the downspout needs to be free of debris so it can release water three feet from your home's foundation. The average national cost of cleaning the gutter and downspout is $181. However, the average national cost of repairing the foundation of a house can cost up to 24 times that amount. • In the cooler months, take a day each year to check caulking for cracks, especially around tubs and showers. Cracks can let in water with no place for drainage, which will cause damage. • Every fall complete an annual roof inspection to help prevent the need for major repairs or a roof replacement. The average national cost of hiring a roof inspector is $360, whereas the average cost of replacing a roof is nearly 19 times that amount. • Before the dog days of summer, hire a
professional to service your HVAC unit. Doing so will increase its efficiency and prevent a breakdown. The cost of replacing and installing an air conditioning unit can cost more than 13 times the amount of servicing one. • Annually check for cracks in the grout of tile floors, which can allow water to seep into the floor and cause mold growth and rot. According to HomeAdvisor's Cost Guide the average national cost of repairing tile and grout is $439. However, the cost of testing and
removing mold can be up to four times that amount. Don't wait for something to go wrong. Inspecting your home's infrastructure and performing proper maintenance can protect your home from costly damage and deterioration.
