INSTRUCTIONS - Pedestal / Platform Frame: 1. Cut the 2x6’s for the 3 Frame Supports a) 3 long Horizontal beams b) 12 shorter legs 2. Cut the 5/8” plywood sides, back, and top panels a) The back panel should be 5/8” taller than the frame (i.e., side panels) so that the back panel will be flush with the top panel, once the top is attached (see Figure 2 below) b) Quick Tip: have Lowe’s or Home Depot cut your plywood for you (very wide panels are hard to cut on your own using a circular saw) 3. Construct the 3 Frame Supports using 3" screws a) Note: for each frame support, screw the center legs together before attaching to the Horizontal beam (essentially making one center “leg” that is 3” in. thick) b) Note: the Horizontal beams should sit on top of all the legs for greater support Figure 1
Figure 2
INSTRUCTIONS - Pedestal / Platform Frame: 4. Attach the 2 side panels and back panel to the Frame Supports using 1 ¼” screws a) Use 1 ¼” ring shank, flat head nails (or 1¼” screws) to further secure the 2 side panels to the Frame (where the 3” screws are too long) b) Leave the top panel off at this point for easier access to install the sliding drawer rails
INSTRUCTIONS - Pedestal / Platform Frame: 5. Install the sliding drawer rails a) Quick Tip: Using a spare piece of 2x6 (~2’ feet long), lay it on its side next to the inside of the legs where you will install the drawer rails. Place the drawer rail on top of the 2x6 and mark your holes. Now do the same on the sides of the drawer to mark your corresponding holes (thus, the drawer rails will align exactly 6 inches from the floor) 6. Attach the top panel to the Frame using 3" and 1¼” screws (3" for the legs, 1¼” for the horizontal beams) 7. Use 60 grit sandpaper to sand down the roughness of the plywood top, sides, and front 8. Use 220 grit sandpaper to smooth the plywood top, sides, and front before painting 9. Paint the top panel, side panels, and front of the Frame using quality mixed paint (not spray paint…too tacky/ sticky even after drying) a) No need to paint the back panel or the top panel where the Washer and Dryer will sit
INSTRUCTIONS - Drawers: 1. Cut the 1/2” in. plywood front, sides, back, and bottom panels 2. Construct the Drawer bottom, sides, and back using 1¼” finishing nails (leave the front panel off) 3. Install the sliding drawer rails on the sides of the Drawer 4. Repeat Steps #1-3 for the 2nd Drawer 5. Insert the “front-less” Drawers into the Pedestal Frame and ensure they both easily slide in and out 6. With the “front-less” Drawers installed, place the front panels of the Drawers in front of the Drawers and Frame so that they are flush with the top and sides of the Frame (leave a ½” in. space from the floor to the bottom of the drawer). Mark with a pencil on the back of the front panel where you need to nail. Note: Another option is to lay the entire Pedestal Frame on it’s back (w/ the “front-less” Drawers in), place the front panels on ‘top’, and mark where you need to nail (since the bottom of the Pedestal is open). (Installing the fronts of the Drawers this way will help ensure that the Drawers are flush w/ the top and sides of the Frame and are centered correctly on the face of your Pedestal) 7. Remove the Drawers from the Pedestal and using 1¼” nails, attach the front panel of the Drawer.
INSTRUCTIONS – Drawer Trim: 1. Cut the 2" wide molding (or trim) with 45-degree angles 2. Use wood glue and/or wood caulk, to glue the molding onto the outer edge of each drawer face. 3. Use 2" in. C-clamps or spring clamps ($.99) to hold the trim in place while glue dries (~12hrs) 4. Use 220 grit sandpaper to sand the drawer edges (where the glue has seeped out from the trim) as well as the outside face and sides 5. Paint 6. Insert the finished Drawers into the sliding rails. 7. You’re all done!
