Actually, it’s all about patterns… • Meteorologists use weather patterns to help predict future weather.
Climate Zones • Climate- Climate is the average weather condition in an area over a long period of time.
Five Factors Determine and Area’s Climate • • • • •
Latitude Prevailing winds Elevation Large Bodies of Water Ocean Surface Currents
Latitude- the distance north or south (measured in degrees) from the equator • The higher the latitude, the colder the climate tends to be.
Prevailing winds- wind that blows mainly from one direction ▫ The climate of an area can be greatly influenced by where the wind is blowing from Think of your four air-masses from last week (cp, ct, mp, mt)
Elevation- the height of surface landforms above sea level ▫ Because weather happens in the troposphere, the higher you are, the cooler the temperature and climate
• Mountains also usually have a dry and wet side. The wet side faces the prevailing winds because as the air rises at it hits the mountain, it causes condensation which leads to rain.
Large bodies of water • Water absorbs and releases heat slower than land does, so sudden or extreme temperature changes rarely take place on land near bodies of water
Ocean surface currents • a horizontal movement of ocean water that is caused by the wind and that occurs at or near the ocean’s surface.
All of these factors combine to form three climate zones: • Tropical – warm year around (red) • Temperate – experience a degree of seasonal changes (green) • Polar – cold year around (blue)
Seasons • Season- One of the four periods of the year (Spring, Summer, Autumn, Winter) characterized by particular conditions of weather and temperature.
• Seasons are caused by the tilt of the earth’s axis (23.5 degree angle). This causes the sun’s rays to shine directly and indirectly on different places of the Earth at different times during the year.
These weather instruments help meteorologists gather weather data: • Anemometer- measures wind speed ▫ Measure in MPH or KPH
• Barometer- measures air pressure ▫ High pressure – fair weather ▫ Low pressure – stormy weather
• Thermometer- measures air temperature ▫ Measured in degrees Fahrenheit or degrees Celsius
Piecing together all this information… …meteorologists can predict the weather with relatively good accuracy.
