Whetstone Moth Report 2010 by Mark Skevington, Pintail Close, Whetstone, Leicestershire
Introduction I first became interested in moths in the late 1990s, and in 1999 I briefly borrowed and operated a small actinic heath trap in my suburban garden. I also spent a lot of night time during that summer looking out for and catching moths that came to a bright domestic light at the side of our house, and I joined local moth recorders on a couple of nights out with MV lights. From those modest beginnings, my interest developed rapidly and from 2000 onwards I have regularly operated light trapping equipment in my garden, wider afield in Leicestershire and Rutland (VC55) and occasionally in other counties (e.g.: Cambs, Lincs, Kent, Dorset and Devon). Coming from a birding background, the main stimulus for me was the greater diversity and potential for seeing new and interesting species, the ID challenges and not least adding to the County biological dataset. I made a conscious effort to look at micros from the start, assisted greatly from 2001 onward when I started making good use of the then relatively new digital stills technology. I was taking photos and using the developing internet forums to confirm or obtain identifications from National experts. I submit all of my records to the relevant County Recorders, and I have published a summary of my garden trapping each year albeit in a spread-sheet format only with no illustrative content or narrative. In parallel with these, I have regularly published photos on the internet. Initially this was via the now defunct Leicestershire and Rutland Moth Group website, and more recently I have maintained a BLOG with regular photos and trap reports. This report is intended to bridge the gap between these and provide an illustrated summary of the key records for the year with observations and trends. A full species report is included, along with a summary of species on the garden list but not recorded in 2010. I should point out that whilst I have a great degree of confidence in my identification ability and the authenticity of my records, these have not as yet been formally vetted. Please therefore do not directly quote or reference any data from this Report without my prior knowledge. I hope you find the Report interesting, and I welcome feedback and comments.
Recording I maintain a database of my garden records using software supplied by MapMate, and would recommend this to anyone involved in biological recording. The software includes taxonomic lists for just about every order, and comes complete with several useful built-in SQL queries to get the best out of the data, plus mapping capabilities.

Local Habitat Whetstone is situated to the south-west of Leicester, outside of the City boundary and within the District of Blaby. Pintail Close is in the southern-most area of a suburban estate that was built in the early 1990s. Southern Leicestershire has relatively poor habitat diversity. Aside from villages and suburban estates, the predominant habitat is sterile farmland with arable and pasture fields. Within a 3km radius of our house there is no substantial woodland or bodies of water. The only significant feature within this radius is Narborough Bog SSSI (red dot). Other features are Jubilee Park which is part of the southern flood plain of the Soar Valley (yellow dot), and there are also three golf courses (white dots). Just outside of this radius is Huncote Embankment running alongside the large Croft Quarry (green dot), an historic quarry in Enderby that has produced many interesting moth records (blue dot), and an area of sidings between rail tracks in South Wigston that has produced interesting butterfly records (orange dot).

Of more immediate significance to my garden recording, there is a raised embankment running adjacent to the garden which separates the housing from an industrial estate. The embankment was mainly grasses and gorse when we first moved here, but has since matured with self-set hawthorn, blackthorn, dogwood, and dog rose. There is also a line of sycamores behind the embankment, and other mature trees and bushes separating the industrial estate from the M1 motorway.
We have a large flowering cherry at the front of our house, and smaller birch, sallow and ash trees to the rear. Neighbouring houses also have plum, apple, rowan and alder.

Light Trapping Equipment During 2010, I have utilised two traps in the garden. The traps are not run on every night – in poor conditions I tend to leave them off. When they are running, they are generally operated from dusk to dawn. Both are the tried and tested Box Trap developed and supplied by VC55 County Recorder, Adrian Russell. One is a 125W MV trap, and the other is an 80W Actinic trap. The latter was modified later in the season with the addition of a 100W tungsten filament bulb to increase the visible light. All of my box traps were also subject to some long-overdue enhancement with the perspex vane assemblies being replaced with a sturdier 6mm material. The MV is situated half way down the garden c10M from the house. It is set against a fence and sits on a slab in the border. I use an old plastic top from some cheapo garden furniture to shield ours and our neighbour's house from the light. The trap faces directly onto the large scrubby embankment that runs adjacent to our garden. The actinic is operated closer to the house and out of direct line of sight from the MV.

Other Recording Methods Occasionally in the late summer I will try a bit of mothing sugar, though in 2010 this was very poor with hardly any species recorded. I also swish about with a net occasionally in the afternoon or at dusk, forage about in the garden shrubbery for caterpillars and leaf-mines, and keep an eye on lit windows in the early and late season when I am not running the light traps. The 2010 Season The lack of mature woodland nearby affects the early and late season most noticeably, with species such as Spring Usher and Mottled Umber yet to appear in the garden. Trapping usually commences in March and ceases in October. If there are favourable conditions in February or November then the traps may go out, but January and December are generally non-trapping months. In 2010, the first and last successful trap nights were 5th March (2 species) and 13th November (1 species). The total for all trapping was 9924 individuals of 384 species (+4 forms, subspecies or aggregates). No. trap nights per month: Mar 7

There were only two nights where the total individuals exceeded 400, or the total species exceeded 100: 8th July - 447 of 108sp (125W MV 241 of 85; 80W/100W actinic/tungsten combo 206 of 69) 19th July - 475 of 105sp (125W MV 190 of 79; 80W/100W actinic/tungsten combo of 285 of 75) With additional species recorded at lit windows, by day, or as larvae/leaf mines, the overall garden total for 2010 was 9945 individuals of 390 species. New Species for the Garden 20 species were added to the garden list in 2010; 15 micros (2 as leaf-mines only) and 5 macros. As at 31/12/2010 the garden list stands at 588 species (295 macros and 293 micros), with an additional 9 forms, subspecies and aggregates. Unless stated otherwise, images correlate to the first record of each species.

Whetstone Moth Report 2010 by Mark Skevington, Pintail Close, Whetstone, Leicestershire
2010 vs Previous Years During the season there are often peaks and troughs which tend to influence your perception on whether it has been a good year of not. During 2010, there were several periods of poor trapping conditions. In particular, the early season seemed slow to get going and there was a period of unfavourable conditions in the summer affecting July and August trapping opportunities. Despite this, comparing the numbers of individuals and species in each year since 2000 when regular trapping commenced, 2010 was the best year so far. Note that this comparison is not entirely likefor-like as up to 2006 I was running a single MV trap. During 2007 I used an additional actinic for part of the late season, and 2008 onwards has been predominantly with both an MV and actinic. This has greatly influenced the number of individuals. The number of trap nights in each year is not constant, though there has been no greater effort in 2010 than previous years.

Early Grey was the only one of the most regular early season Noctuids that did not show an increase. Notably the flight period for this species usually outlasts the Orthosia spp. by a week or two, but in 2010 it was over before Clouded Drab and Hebrew Character.

Lesser Yellow Underwing and Square-spot Rustic again appear to have declined – though this is quite possibly due to the poor trapping weather in the peak flight period. (Note - Large Yellow Underwing is plotted separately) Page 30 of 48

The protracted flight period for this species is partly due to the longevity of the adults which can aestivate during hot periods in the summer. The increase in 2007 and large peak in 2008 coincided with the introduction of actinic trapping alongside the MV, and this was initially assumed to be the reason. However the low total for 2010 (379 individuals) is also with both traps running and presumably does indicate a poor year. This species can be very disruptive in the traps and makes emptying on peak nights a real chore, however it will be interesting to see how it fares in 2011.

This species has two broods in the south (Jun-Jul & late Aug-Sep), and one elsewhere (late Jun – mid Aug). As we are in the middle I am not sure if we have variation between one protracted brood in some years and two in others, but the occurrences in the garden seem to support two with the second brood accounting for the vast majority of garden records. After the dramatic and very welcome increase in 2009, it was greatly disappointing to record only 5 individuals in 2010. Whether this is a blip or a genuine return to being a scarce garden species remains to be seen.

This species is very clearly double-brooded, with most garden individuals occurring in the second brood. It appears to have a cyclic tendency in its appearances in the garden, though it is unclear why as the foodplant preferences include dandelion and docks. I anticipate that it will either appear as a handful of individuals at most in 2011, or perhaps be completely absent again as in 2005.

This is such a common species at some locations where I trap, that I had completely missed how scarce it has become in the garden. In fact it is so common elsewhere that I haven't bothered to photograph one since 2002 – something to remedy in 2011. As for why it has declined so dramatically, I have no suggestion.

In complete contrast to Clouded Border, this species has in recent years maintained an annual increase in numbers. Hawthorn and bramble are plentiful on the embankment so I see no reason for this species to decline.

In the first few years of trapping, this species was certainly one that I had come to expect. I was surprised when it suddenly declined, pleased when it started to bounce back, and now it is back down. The main foodplant is Red Campion, which is fairly common, but perhaps the apparent rise and fall in numbers is due to some local verge management policy. Hopefully I'll see more in 2011.

After a steady rise in numbers, the peaks in 2007 and 2008 suggested that this species was set to become very common in the garden. However number dropped in 2009 and 2010 saw a further decline. This species has two clear broods, and part of the recent decline is due to fewer individuals in the second brood (or perhaps shows that the 2007/8 second broods were exceptionally good?).

This species feeds on bramble and readily comes to light. I therefore have no rational explanation or suggestions as to why this species has such a strange trend over the last few years. Hopefully the higher numbers will continue in 2011.

This adventive species feeds on everything and anything, and is considered a pest in most countries that it has colonised. It has overlapping broods with two distinct peak periods, and has been recorded in almost every month. After the massive peak in 2001, numbers seemed to have stabilised but 2010 saw a sharp decline. I suspect that this will be a temporary blip ...

Whilst all of the commonest grass moths coming to the garden traps show varying fortunes, this species has undergone a dramatic decline to the point where only a handful of individuals are turning up. This is the earliest grass moth on the wing, and perhaps the generally warmer/wetter winters are having an effect. It will be interesting to see how this species fares following the cold early 2010/2011 winter.

The 2 individuals in 2002 were the first recorded in VC55. Since then, this species had become a regular in the garden albeit in modest numbers. However the 2010 season saw a dramatic increase with numbers more than tripled. As far as I am aware, there has been no increase in local ornamental conifers, so it will be interesting to see what the numbers in 2011 are.

The individuals in 2000 were the first confirmed records in VC55. Since then this species had maintained a steady general increase until 2008 when numbers suddenly shot up. The drop in 2009 was repeated in 2010 – though it is possible that this reflects poor trapping opportunities during the peak flight period in these two years.
