The fictional town of Cedar Creek and all of its characters eventually became the real town of Luckenbach and all of its characters (and Luckenbach has some real characters!) Trapper said he was about to lonesome to death for companionship when “once upon a time he found a poor little baby abandoned skunk on a giant, dangerous ledge in the huge evergreen forest.” (Boy, that’s writin’.)

“Couldn’t you find a better companion than a skunk?” I thought out loud. That’s when he gave me that “it matters not the pace (skunks are slow), speed or forest origin.” He calls his skunk “Brother”. Mama looked puzzled till he came up with “You don’t know how hollow my cabin was.” Now when my footsteps reach the cabin I can hear a little body makin’ welcomin’ noises inside. It makes comin’ home easier, and we play on the dirt floor. I’m even beginnin’ to talk baby talk to him like the little disgustin’ ladies talk to their dogs. I never thought I’d do that.
