Notes to Teacher: Quotes are fun to use in the classroom for many reasons. They encourage critical thinking and even research. They also expose students to a broad range of issues and vocabulary. Here are some suggestions for how you can use this activity in your class: 1. Making Inferences—the quotes in this activity are not necessarily well-known or famous quotes. Encourage students to use what they know about the different individuals (or research them) to infer who might have said the quote. 2. Research the People—Use this as a simple research assignment for students to find out who said the quote. It can be a class or home assignment. 3. Research the Context—have students research the context of a quote. Why did the person say it? Was it part of a famous speech or work? When was it said? What was going on in the world at the time? What does it mean for us today? 4. Discussions and Debates—have students discuss the quotes. What do they mean? Do students agree or disagree? 5. Simple Artistic Display—have students choose a person, and draw them with a speech bubble saying the quote. 6. Making Comparisons—have students choose two quotes and tell what they have in common with each other or how they fit together. 7. Summarizing—have students summarize the quotes and rewrite them in their own words. 8. Bulletin Board—make a “guess who” bulletin board where you or students write quotes in speech bubble pattern provided and others have to guess the speaker.
